Yeah it was an obvious forward pass and it should have been called dead when they stormed the field really. Like one of the players from the other team tried to stop him (who were possibly on the sideline).

There is a rule where if a coach, or a player coming off the bench, tackles a runner who has a clear unabated path to the endzone, the refs can award that team a touchdown.

So the forward pass happened at twenty seconds, the clock was already at zero. So really the refs should have called it dead when the ball was lost and on the ground. Especially with the forward pass happening before that. So the mayhem would have no affect on the outcome anyways and it would be unfair to start the play over possibly giving Western Michigan the win.

You're correct on the former. Another single play with no time on the clock should have transpired from the original spot. A game cannot end on a defensive penalty, even when there are offsetting offensive penalties involved. Had the offensive penalty been the only one it would have been a done deal; the forward pass would not only have nullified the eventual outcome of the play, it would have instigated a mandatory 10sec run-off (which is semi-meaningless here, since time had already expired). But as soon as you add in the defensive penalty to the mix that scenario becomes a wash. The non-personal-foul penalties offset, and because of the defensive penalty presence, the game cannot yet conclude; one more play should have been snapped. The refs boned this.
