Western Heights Grand Shaft Open Day, Dover.

#Dover #WesternHeights #GrandShaft
This week we take a look at the Grand Shaft at Dovers Western Heights. A unique 19th century triple spiral staircase used as a defence system for the rapid movement of troops. Being the only one in the UK it is now looked after by the Western Heights Preservation Society and available to visit on open days throughout the Summer.

I have vague memories of seeing this on a trip out as a boy, would've been mid to late 70's. I don't remember actually going down (or up) it. Is that a time when it was all shut down? Is it far from the castle? All the best guys! 👍

Its not too far from Castle.. its pretty much next to the Drop Redoubt Fort on the Western Heights.. I believe it was cleared out of all the rubbish which had accumulated in it around the 1970s and just left abandonedbefore that.. not sure when it started being opened officially to the public though. Thanks for watching 👍😊
