Wesley subtly imply that as you matured the pressure of maintaining your rating or status is of utmost importance as it also mean good income. This also mean that the ambition to become a WC is only secondary. Sad, but most super GMs is no Magnus where sponsorships abound, this is why Magnus has more initiative to take more risks as he is assured of a large sum win or lose.

@@nicbentulan Depends on the tournament situation: In a round robin tournament where they have no chance of winning they'll probably just play for rating making draws with black and playing solid with white. They'll also be tired by the end of a round robin aswell. I wouldn't necessarily blame this on sponsorship but perhaps if that didn't matter they would be more inclined to play for a win, taking on more risk.

  • @rileybyng1738

@Terraformer00 Other sports are generally balanced for both sides. White has an advantage that's more significant at higher levels. So if a strong player can draw with black they will take it. Of course if their opponent is notably weaker they will play to win. In Football I'm sure a div 1 team would be happy with a draw against a premier league team but Football doesn't allow for one team to just play for a draw.

Yes, but Magnus has assured his financial security by winning tournaments, winning World Championships, and then getting extra sponsorships by being a World Champion, and the investing in a correct way (with the help of competent team, of course). But it all comes from being the best player in the world. He did not inherit his wealth from his family, he earned all the money himself

This was a great interview, Wesley seemed very relaxed and open about a wide variety of topics. I know you have time limits for this show, but maybe next time let him talk for a while longer. I was waiting for him to get back to his remarks about "the Great Magnus", and whoever the "little angel" was, and to elaborate on "Hans is well known as the most obnoxious teenager", and how the context switching between classical and rapid chess is difficult, and "I played a6 by accident". Any one of those would be a great half hour podcast! I've played a6 by accident myself, but I'm 500 Elo so I have an excuse.

Yeah, I know what he is saying about Hans being disrespectful. Maybe a year ago I was browsing through youtube chess vids and found Hans's video, and he was trash talking the other player for losing, and I immediately concluded I didn't want to see any more Hans's vids. That was then. I'm enjoying watching Hans play now that Magnus made his games so popular with those wild OTB cheating accusations. Most of us all know he isn't cheating OTB. But, re being disrespectful, I think he has been trashed so much recently re online chess cheating, and OTB chess cheating accusations, that he might be lashing out. I suspect he will come around to be more respectful as he matures.
