Werner Herzog on images, TV, and shoes
Ойын-сауық
Clips from Les Blank's classic 1980 short, "Werner Herzog Eats His Shoe." (visit lesblank.com to obtain the whole film). The film documents Herzog fulfilling a bet he made with Errol Morris: if Morris would finish his brilliant first feature "Gates of Heaven," Herzog said he would eat his shoe. He uses this public stunt to say some very serious things about American pop culture, filmmakers becoming "clowns" to promote their work, and the culture of images (or lack thereof). Clips like these can be found at the new Media Funhouse blog, which offers clips, reviews, a guide to KZread and other sites, as well as everything in pop culture "from high art to low trash, and back again..." www.mediafunhouse.blogspot.com

Almost 40 years since Herzog ate his shoe and shared some insights about the world's problems from the standpoint of images, seizing the opportunity to do so... it resonates, unfortunately, on a greater scale this day and age. We need filmmakers, new image-grammar writers. Thank you, Wernie!
I love you Herzog. You make my German classes feel worthwhile.
I love it when he says: "it makes me into a clown!"
Thanks for sharing this clip. I've known this for years but now that Conan mentioned it I felt like watching it. Herzog is one of the best.
he's great and with loads of guts!!!
if you want to do a film, steal a camera, now I am going to eat the other shoe...
The fact that this has only 114 comments simply proves that everything he said about "tv" (and all media) is correct. I don't know why he makes me laugh so hard. Everything he says is more or less common sense and correct.
I suggested this film to my students today. Have any of you stopped by?
Herzog is brilliant and completely hilarious.
His voice and speech reminds me a lot of John Malkovich.
Beautiful.
I think we should see some videos of this Mrs. Loughlin! Come on, all her pupils and get this going as a class project! My curiosity has really being piqued about this lady-she sounds like a truly inspirational teacher! Anyone who's turning her charges onto Werner Herzog deserves some sort of recognition!
"dont ask questions bigger than you are" hahaha
This guy was on Conan last night. Incredibly dry sense of humor, amazing character.
LOL Werner Herzog is so funny. Not to forget humble and intelligent.
Yeah..heard about Werner on Conan...and he is amazing...I'm a new fan..this guy is strangley awesome.
Hey, everyone. Thanks for checking in to Werner. I'm glad you saw something valuable in what he had to say. Peace out.
A maverick genius, a true eccentric of which there is less of these days.
Hi Ms. L. Its Amanda from 2nd period. Here to say that I watched the video. I find it good how he said that he was saving the other shoe for WHEN it gets published by a big name publisher, not IF. Have a good day!
Yummy! Now I have to get a midnight snack. Thanks a lot Werner.
I guess when all else fails we should follow in the foot steps of Herzog & Chaplin & eat our shoes!
You'll find it on the DVD "Herz aus Glas".
Ms. L. It's Emily Benforado. Watched the video!!
A very good director for me at least. Watch the kinski films, brilliant.
"[...]That's the way to do it. If you want to do a film; steal the camera." Hell YES! The man knows what he's talking about, he actually did that.
all in all its a 20-minutes documentary. Its on the german-dvd-version of "Herz aus Glas".On this DVD you'll find also the documentary "Gasherbrum-Der leuchtende Berg" bout Messner and Kammerlander (44 min).I'll see what I can do...
Interestingly deep fellow.
Hi, everyone! Enjoy the clip! Keep watching the good stuff! Ms. L.
Yeah, I just watched that conan episode and thats why i came here to see this.
this is the greatest film ever made.
OMG you're right
Hey Ms. L, it's Elizabeth from 6th period. I'm still in awe of the fact that he actually ate his shoe. It's crazy & weird..
First time I saw this video, 4:46 seemed to me like an adequate image, like being able to appreciate an old tune like the original version of 'all the things you are' for what it is. Tis not like watching Christopher Walken holding a machine gun. Writing to me seems like a search for a new grammar of images. I'm not sure how far Herzog ever really achieved that, though. In his German films he seemed to raise questions without being able to offer answers. And since the 1990s, as a person, he has taken clowning to a whole different level. He is really a documentary maker rather than an artist/storyteller. But he can take a "secret mainstream" view of things, which can be refreshing.
2:46 some reporter asks a stupid question...and someone in the crowd says it under his breath...but it gets picked up in the recording....hahaha
hey mrs. L its me Sophia in your first pd. awesome job Werner... haha.
Werner Herzog did steal a 35 mm camera from a college in Germany. I don't even think he was a student there. He contended that he had a "natural right" to take the camera. He used it to make Aguirre.
François Truffaut... He's was French director.
san pedro is in southern california
i love his german accent
please, post Herzog's SPIEL IM SAND (alias GAME IN THE SAND alias GIOCO SULLA SABBIA)!
Herzog RULES
seems like a pretty funny guy and a good sport to me.
3:04 "who is haha.....who is society hahaha?!" :) best part hahah!!!
Ms. Loughlin is luis munoz from 3rd
Ms. L It's Vee ... its pretty cool that he actually ate his shoe and keep his word, that's admirable. and what does he mean by adequate images?
Wow truly remarkable. xD Its Jessica Ms.L..........
such a brilliant line! who in the clip said that?
Hey Ms. L it's Christa from 2nd period , If you couldn't tell from my name Lol . This is very interesting . I think its the fact that a person eating their shoe . At 1:42 the chick see the camera and turns real fast . I think someone is a bit camera shy .
His german accent sounds great=)
Hi Ms.L its Jon from 6th period.
"If you want to make a film do it"...."fight against the TV and talkshows..." Allways in sad times we need clowns !!!!
He has the best voice. Christopher Walken close behind.
I'm sorry, but again, it's on "Heart of Glass" (German DVD-Version)!!
There needs to be a YTP of ADEQUATE IMAGES.
Man eats shoe. Film at 11.
WHY?
Werner Herzog definitely knows a lot about media and the way it effects us, his comedy is funny, but is over my head, and for some reason it seams like he has no emotions while speaking -Hunter W.- -6th period-
Ha! What a fucking badass!
Ms.L its Sam from 7th period he is crazy but its kind of cool (it looks like he enjoyed it)
winners don't shiver
hey im jonathan king in your seventh period. i just have one question, how did it taste???? i hope i get extra credit for this?
Do you know the background to this story? It was a fundraiser for a friend's film. And are you so sure he is "oblivious"? Or could he just have a dry delivery? In fact, I've seen/heard him joke and laugh in several interviews. And come on, do you know him well enough (is he a colleague, a personal friend?) to speculate whether he has Asperger's? And even if he did, so what? Would that de-legitimize the points made in this short?
I'm with Herzog, burn the tv!
Francois Truffaut.
Im finnish too. All finnish people dont talk english like that.
Yay! Conan fans!
But... isn't it toxic? All the coloring and the chemicals for curing the leather...
he is afraid of chickens , but maybe its ok to eat them. at kfc they are already defeated ore something like that
DA-DA-DIS-MEDIUM-HERZOG..........gggggggreat.
What a nut! I love him! Not in a gay way...not that's theirs any thing wrong with that.
that new grammar of images is only respected and in fact only exists to a minority, which is a real shame.
I think it's more funny for Herzog to be monotone and pretending to be serious all the time. It's more cynical. Otherwise it would be more like a cheap act.
