Were We LIED TO? | Scott Pilgrim Takes Off

Фильм және анимация

You were wrong. We were all wrong. This isn't what you think it is. They lied to us. And honestly it's pretty amazing because of it. This is them all grown up. Emotionally. Not physically. And it's what we needed.

O’Malley said on Instagram that Old Scott is not Scott from the comics, the anime is its own thing and just another version were the events of the series happened. Scott Pilgrim always reflects O’Malley where he is in his life. He always admitted that he and Ramona was a self insert of him and then girlfriend turned wife. The books he wanted to finish it before he turned 30 because it wouldn’t feel the same since it was a story for people in their 20s. Seconds (which you should read) is about finding your place and moving on. Now the anime feels like someone who has grown up more been through different kinds of hardships. Like O’malley’s own divorce with his wife a while back.l

I feel like that "scott isn't the same as the comics" part is bs, mainly bc of two reasons: 1. Some people were hard hating on it, so maybe he felt it was backfiring and said "hey, lets pretend its not the same one, haha" 2. Its obvious it is, that Scott had the same-exact adventure as the comics one, plus its just a reflection of Bryan's past life, just like the comics did

Let's be honest, the movie and show aren't super accurate to the comics. So, with this show, we thought we might get an animated verson of it with better focus on the other characters. But we didn't. As for the lack of development of the 2 Protagonist, your point doesn't apply here either. The show was not advertised as a sequel, so I don't have to treat it as such. So, instead, we have a Protagonist who dissappear for half the show after the first episode, and a character who doesn't have a lot going on personality wise. Once I realized it was an extension of the comics, I really enjoyed the show. Focusing on Ramona and the Ex's was a great move. I do find it weird that the Twins got no screen time, when all the other Ex's got entire episodes. Hard agree as well that this show definitely feels like a post-divorce O'Malley revisiting his characters older and wiser. A couple of additional personal high points: - Envy's big Kill La Kill Kiryuin energy when she crashes the funeral. - Knives and Kim are in their video game outfits for the final episode (Knives' black outfit, scarf and red streak, Kim in her stripped black and white coat). Stephen and Wallace might be as well, its harder to see. - Playing the midboss music from the video game during the Old Scott fight.

I love the overall message of the show about how one's actions always have consequences, especially when it comes to other people. Putting it through the lens of video game aesthetics is perfect because a lot of us are at the age where it resonates. The power of self-respect sword from the movie was a good idea in theory, but it did little to relate to the above message

I like the idea that the future Scott is the one from the movie specifically. In the book the story takes place over a year and over that time Scott really reconciles and tries to change rather than the movie where he kinda stays where he is except in the end for like 6 minutes and the story took place over two weeks. I love the idea that the reason it didn’t work out with Ramona for movie Scott in the future is because the whole story arc was too short so it didn’t sink in enough.

Another point that adds to this idea is the weapon of choice of the two different Scotts. In the comic, he uses the sword of empathy, going with the theme that he manages to learn how to look outside of himself and understand other people. On the other hand, movie Scott gets the sword of self-respect, namely, he's learned that he's right, and that all he really needs to do is double down on backing himself. One of these epiphanies is going to be more prone to the sorts of errors that Old Scott made than the other.

If you think the comics didn't have enough interaction between Scott and Ramona, why would you tell people not to read them first in favor of a show where they have much LESS interaction? Scott and Ramona only really interact in three episodes: an abridged retelling of book 1 with an alternate ending, the second half of the penultimate episode, and the finale. They barely spend any time together at all, since Scott is absent for five out of eight episodes. The anime makes your issue worse, unless it's being used to add depth and new interactions to a preexisting story.

@@NationalistsRuinAmerica I read the comics when they were new & “Scott/Ramona got married, but Ramona remained essentially avoidant & Scott massively overreacted to relationship issues they had in their 30s” seems like a pretty realistic direction for them. I didn’t finish that story thinking that Scott/Ramona were perfect, but that they were going to try to work through their flaws together … and in this story, they are still doing that

@@TheJadedJames Did you remember the moment when Ramona said she needed some time to herself and Scott was completely fine with it? In fact it was Ramona who ended up bailing on him. Why would he then freak out completely at Ramona requesting the same thing again AFTER they got married? Maybe you should reread the comic, cuz "when they were new" is a pretty long time ago.

New watcher here, I honestly enjoyed episodes 2-6 more than 1, 7 and 8. My favourite was episode 3 for obvious reasons and I hope that lil ninja gremlin gets herself a girlfriend at some point. I honestly didn't really get why Ramona and Scott was a thing at all, but since they speedran through that to get to the new stuff I was fine to just accept that there probably was something in other versions of the story. Weirdly... I didn't care about the mystery at all because I didn't care about Scott? It was just a neat backdrop to pushing Ramona to talk to her exes, and push most of their characters to develop too. Despite the gross stuff between her and Scott early on, I really loved Knives coming into her own as a talented musician.

My only problem with this show is that it was advertised as an adaptaion and basically lied to market it to fans of the film and og books. This has happened before with Masters of the Universe where they played with peoples nostalgia. That being said this show is 100% fantastic but it just pissed people off for no reason and would've been so much better without the false advertising. I'd like to see both, a new angle of the story like they did here and an animated adaptation of the og story.

Newbie here, I heard in the past about Scott Pilgrim, mostly because of the re-release of the game and the memes, and I knew the general plot but I never dived deeper into it. It' only when I saw the series on my netflix homepage that I decided to give it a go thinking that it was a one to one adaptation of the comics, but I was soon proved wrong, and even if it was the first piece of Scott Pilgrim media that I consumed it didn't impact the overall enjoyment that I had watching the sieres, it was very mature in it's themes and most importantly it was REAL even under the anime superpowers coat that the show has, all the charachters felt like real people with real problems that aren't always perfect and that did their fair share of bullshit in the past, and even tho I'm only a teenager some of the characters and scenes spoke to me on a personal level. Right after finishing the last episode I went on to search for more Scott Pilgrim content, and I plan on reading the comics. Sorry for the bad english

I loved the casualty of everything, I loved the way it was so calm and comforting even though it had a plot, a mystery, great fight scenes, and everything. The animation was cute, Ramona was amazing, the weird time paradox stuff was really cool, the scenes of Ramona dying her hair might be my favorite thing ever, the way characters interacted was great. It just felt so calm and casual and the way magic was so normal was fascinating because I've never really seen any form of media which had something like that.

even though ppl ignorantly throw out terms like 'grooming' with any age-gap relationship, i'll be the creep and point out that in the comics, it's very clear that scott is originally interested in knives genuinely prior to meeting ramona, and that they live in toronto (legal age of consent there is 16), if only because he's heartbroken by envy and wants a 'simple' relationship. also, his friends realistically DO chide scott -- 'male friends are concerned with how hot knives is' and envy the dynamic while female friends teasingly accuse him of being 'evil' and ask if he's being manipulative constantly. this is a very realistic depiction of how a friend group that's not sententious and performatively judgmental would react to a friend in that situation.

  • @Battfro
    @Battfro6 ай бұрын

I'm gonna say something weird because I had the exact same confusion you did about Scott dating a Knives. I had read the comic and saw the movie as a kid so I didn't think about it then. But now I was confused why it wasn't taken more seriously since Knives is 17 and Scott is 24. After all, isn't that a crime. One rabbit hole later and it turns out it isn't, which is offputting. Canada's age of consent for "non-exploitative sex" is 16. It is only lower if the older party is like a teacher or a doctor. It is only 18 if the person is appearing in a porno. That is messed up. But it's even weirder because apparently it's that way in the states. Even my home state has it at 17. So, yeah. It's fucked up, but the reason it isn't treated as a crime is because it oddly isn't. Weird, right? I just thought it was 18 everywhere.

Great review and analysis! I definitely agree that giving us a version of the story that pushes Ramona into the spotlight allows her character to be delivered and explored in a more full and interesting way, than in the comics. On the topic of the mystery, I don't think it's meant to be that important, especially when the answer ends up being "a robot vegan", which Ramona delivers with comical seriousness to highlight the absurdity of the situation. It's more of just a storytelling tool to force interaction and growth with Ramona and the exes, which it does well. However, clearing up a little misconception, Older Scott is not the original comic Scott. Bryan Lee O'Malley said "i think the anime timeline is its own thing. it comments on the book and movie, but it isn't meant to replace them. it's just a new iteration that starts at the beginning again." Older Scott can be read as a commentary on comic Scott or even movie Scott, but he isn't literally meant to be either of them. He's just the bad future of anime Scott. I'm not sure when the last time you read Scott Pilgrim's Finest Hour was, but you may be misremembering some pretty substantial parts of the story, which is why I disagree so strongly with your point about the anime being an apology for the comic misrepresenting what relationships should be like: everything you praise about the finale was done in the comic, first. Scott and Ramona working together to attack a problem is exactly how they defeat Gideon, with both saving each other at different points, admitting their faults, and vowing to better themselves. Scott seeing the failures of his past is shown very directly in his encounter with Nega Scott (which we're never told happened to Older Scott) and earning the Power of Understanding, against Gideon. Ramona picking Scott regardless of the troubles that they'll face as a couple is shown when she takes up the Power of Love and is the entire point of their conversation, after the battle. Ramona realizing that she was also a bad partner happens the first time Scott dies. There is no "growing up" or "apologizing" from Scott Pilgrim Takes Off's messages because ultimately, every major message it does give is repeated almost directly from the source material. The real growing up is in the specific way it chooses to deliver those messages, resolving the situations with Ramona's exes and Even Older Scott peacefully, committing to the message of it never being too late to clean up a mess, even harder than the original comic ever did. Very happy you enjoyed and recommended the series! It really is one of those shows that people who pay attention always have something interesting and thoughtful to say about.

I loved SPTO and am happy it exists, but I really wish it was marketed as the AU story that it is. A trailer where we smash cut to Scott dying and then Ramona doing her whodunnit investigation stuff. Its a great concept! But there's elements of the comics that the movie just didn't capture, and I was really excited to see those finally animated - and episode 1 got all the vibes I wanted to see down SO WELL that its hard not to be disappointed when the show pulls that out from under me. I'm happy some people were able to find that surprise satisfying, but I couldn't. Yes, the comics still exist and I can return to them whenever - but I enjoy the medium of animation, and wanted to see those slice of life moments and an actual engaging Scott-Ramona relationship to be portrayed, versus the kinda cold one from the movie that was the result of them intending to ultimately have Scott get back together with Knives in the end. Its also annoying that complaints about the bait and switch somehow get viewed as not wanting SPTO to exist at all. I can want both an adaptation of the comics, AND an new adventure with these characters. Just be honest with me about which one we're getting, because they're fulfilling some fundamentally different desires. (And related side note: It also feels like they're doing Ramona kinda dirty. Like they didn't think people would be interested in a show starring her so that's not how they marketed it, when she's a great protagonist! When I say this show shoulda been called Ramona Flowers Takes Off or whatever, thats not derogatory - shes the heart of this story!)

I do agree its a little eyerolling and dragging a bit in the movie-set episodes. But i look at it as a love letter so the comic and movie. Its so much fun! Exciting! Satisfying! Not to mention it really fleshes out the characters a little more so you love them that much more. And also the Todd's gay awakening had me dying and not much makes me laugh. AND THE ANIMATION OMG ACK-
