WERE THE 70s AND 80s REALLY BETTER THAN TODAY?

With the world having so many problems it is easy to look back at your younger years and think things were much better then. But is that really true? Let's talk.

Internet is a double-edged sword. I agree that in overall it has ruined the world. For just mention 1 thing, before internet there where actually culture differences in the world, now it is just 1 big mess under a global elite (feminism). But at the same time, internet is a good timewaster. Being without internet would feel very boring unless you live a very active lifestyle.

Everything was cheap and even though I was on low wages I was happy, today you have to work just to pay the bills and life is very hard. The Government is not interested in the middle man or woman today they just want to screw as much money 💴 out of you as possible. I'm about the same age as you Eddy, left school in 1979. I personally think 70's/80's were slightly better than now (I was obviously a teenager back then). I know growing up in the 70's we had a lousy economy in the UK, blokes going to Germany for work, strikes galore, endless power cuts, binmen on strike etc.. Life seemed very simple back then, no mobile phones, kids played outside safely etc. I suppose you could say we were poorer than now, food was poor, 3 TV stations, travel abroad was expensive, cars unreliable. Life was simpler back then and people were much happier too. The music was fantastic. England was England back then if you get my drift. 80's were great for me in London, good job, reasonable salary, lots of trips abroad etc.... UK is a right old mess now, yes people have more money, weather is the same! Political correctness, crime, rampant immigration, overcrowded country, dreadful NHS, really poor standards generally.

Smart phones have destroyed humanity as many psychologists have said, destroyed childrens lives and have caused more division and suicides than at any point in human history. I would 1000% go back to before 1995 and a much simpler life in a heartbeat, absolutely! 👍

The biggest difference is if you got a college education back in the 1970's, you could get a good job and rise up from poverty to upper middle class. We started with nothing and because we were not saddled with student loan debt we were able to become in the top 2%. That is not the case now. Young people are saddled with debt, need help from their parents financially and do not have the opportunity that we had. The middle class is shrinking in the USA. This is not the American Dream. I am speaking about the USA.

Hi Eddy, not sure what to say..I moved to UK in 1975 , did not want to do French military service, I was 20 then. I had shit job in Curry's and a great job as pot man in a pub in Kingston. Traveled the world thru all the au pair girls, had loads of friends. Little money, shit bedsit but HAPPY. I was 20 years old. The music was great, flares, platform shoes. Etc. Then got working in computers and travelled a lot, even made good money freelance. That was good until 2000 or so. Been traveling again and spending 50% of my time in Thailand, was great in 1997, everything was nearly free, 90 baht to the pound....Then it slowly got old, I got old, 68. Still better than UK though. I think we were young and healthy, care free . I like what you do, "keep on trucking". Cheers. Christian.

Into day times so much hate, with all the great electronics we have ,we lost the human interaction and personal connection. The world order wants to harmonize that everyone is the same. The internet is convenient, absolutely. But have we lost something from this comfortable convenience? I would say yes. Look around you, people are functioning on a day to level in a manner of comfortable numbness. I used to write several love letters a day to my first love in Malta, I lived in London, I was 23. The level of deep human emotion I felt at this time was boundless. I don't believe there is a comparison when you can ping your latest written emotions to the recipient at the other end of the internet, at the instant touch of an electronic button, as frequently as you desire... We do not feel as I believe we should really feel as human beings. We feel in a kind of abstracted way. Look at all the narcissism of many girls and young women who are constantly taking photos and videos of themselves only. What is this saying to us? I believe it speaks volumes for the absence of meaning and of soul to these people's lives. It's as if they are trying to fill a void but don't quite know how to... I went back to England when I was 50 ( I'd been away from it for 10 years). I stayed in Rotherhithe, with my brother near Canada Water tube station. Being away from London for so long there were 2 things that struck me. All the professionals going into and coming out of the underground station looked like zombies, There was no personal interaction with each other or with train station staff. There was no smiling or acknowledging the presence of other human beings. Everybody's walk seemed to be at the same pace. It was if they were all of a dutiful, un-feeling 'hive-mind'.i do blame the internet for this. The other thing I noticed was the proliferation of transgender self-identifiers. It was an explosion. I and my ex wife must have spotted 7 in 10 days in London. Prior to leaving England 10 years previously I probably saw the same number but over the whole of my life till I left! Any girl you may meet these days asks straight away if you are on WhatsApp, Tik Tok... People are losing the ability to chat in a natural everyday situation. The internet has reduced our attention spans to that of a gnat. I know that can no longer focus long enough to read a long book, as I used to before the internet, before I become distracted and look for my next quick dopamine rush online. We've actually lost a lot. But I believe the internet's great, comfortable convenience is where it is most stealthily dangerous ... I agree that music in the 70s and 80s was far superior to music that is served up to us today . I also agree that film's had believable, gritty actors in the 70s and 80s. They did feel more real , organic and, again, more human and life-like than the dire propagandised, often AI saturated offerings of today.

I would agree with you Ed that the invention of the Internet and smartphones are marvellous things but and it's a very very big BUT because both come with some very, very BIG downsides, those being an ideal way for criminals to scam people out of their life savings especially older people that are more vulnerable and trusting, then there's the heartbreaking stories of young kids committing suicide because of online bullying and harassment, people being addicted to online gambling and losing all they have as well as their homes and marriages and their lives in some cases. Back in the day if you wanted to have a bet you had to go to a bookies so it was much less convenient to gamble. As for Netflix and Sky and the like well I don't have them so can't comment. We say all of this technology is great and wonderful but it all comes with a price and I have serious doubts over it's benefits.

Very well said Steady Eddy. There’s a lot of things better today than there was in the 70’s and 80’s and there were a few things better back in the old days than there is today. As I grew up in the 80’s and 90’s I love and miss the nostalgia of yesteryear but as for internet and smartphones, it made things so much more easier and helps me when I go out traveling overseas.

Sorry Eddy, a lot of points I don’t agree with you. I was in the building industry in the 70’s in the UK and there was work everywhere. The oil industry was starting up and Aberdeen was booming. Music in the 60’s and 70’s was the very best. Even today that’s all I ever listen to. Life was great with fantastic music festivals. I went to the 1st Isle of White festival and Reading blues festival. Good times. I lived in Thailand in 1980 and things seemed a lot simpler than today. Now still in Southeast Asia after 44 years so cannot comment on what it’s like in the UK these days. Immigration does seem to be a problem but if the UK would stop following America into all these wars and destroying their countries, then maybe they would not have to immigrate

Born in 1954, I hated the 70’s. Cops took the piss & cameras didn't exist with geriatric magistrates believing every word the bent liars said. Young (legal) motorists like me were hounded as cash cows for the scum. 80’s were great and early ‘90’s even better, the music terrific. I never took drugs but discovering Thailand in the 2000s extended the fun immeasurably (still does). No, F the 50’s 60’s & 70’s, it all arrived for me in the 80’s.

I'm 61 and from the very worst areas and schools in Glasgow. Leading up to the 70s & 80s, socialism and the "I'm alright Jack" generation destroyed the UK. Perhaps Thatcher's social policies could have been finessed but her economic policies came straight from Milton Friedman and that's why they worked. By the 90s & 00s the UK had pulled itself together and opportunities abounded for anyone prepared to get off their backside and work - unfortunately that didn't suit everybody. Now in the 2010s & 20s we have a new mania which has spread across the West and which appears suspiciously like totalitarian socialism in disguise. If Thatcher was alive today, I've no doubt she'd sweep to power in Britain and I've no doubt she'd save our country once again.

In a word, a resounding YES! You could be poor and survive now you have no hope even if you earn a few bob. The average person has forgotten the effects Friedman at Chicago and his economic bollocks that Reagan, Thatcher, et al. swallowed and that was way before the last 15 years since the GFC. Yes, there loads of other issues but all things, sadly, come down to affordability. Being 65 growing up in London then moving to Chicago and Denver in the late 70s I can tell you that no matter how bad Britains economy was then it’s worse now. And in the US they used to say you worked to live now it’s the opposite. I’d go back in a heartbeat.

Easier to buy a house back then in the 70s and 80s if you were lucky enough to have a half decent job - you'd have to be bloody lucky in the early/mid 80s when I left school though. What about the UK pension age going up in recent years? Companies doing wholescale wage cuts for the same work in recent years. I'm talking from 2000s onwards. But if you go far back enough, say pre 1950s, no such thing as the 'good old days'. Btw Maggie Thatcher is in a better place now.

No doubt that things, for the most part, are far better now than they were in the 70's when I was growing up. I can just compare the conditions of countries I visited as a backpacker in 1984 with those same countries today that I have revisited. No comparison, all are much better off. Plus it is so much easier to travel now with the internet, GPS, Google Maps and Translate, much cheaper airfares, better food, better tourist infrastructure, etc, etc etc. People don't like change so that is why they complain - but change is the only constant in life so deal with it - it ain't so bad! That's my two cents (pence) Ed. Great topic and video as usual! BTW, I laugh when people say airfares were cheaper - they weren't at all when you consider inflation. For example, my first one way discount ticket from Toronto to Tokyo cost $1500 in 1990. That is equivalent to $3000 today but today you can buy that same ticket for $800 or even less. No comparison - people make lazy comparisons without doing the actual research - total BS.

The internet is amazing in the modern age which we didn’t have back in the ‘70s and ‘80s. Pros and cons to everything as I grew up through both decades, some things good some not so good back then. FFW to now still some good and not so good but simplicity seemed better back then, less distractions with people stuck on their phones and more personal interactions with each other.
