Were it not for the Lord I’d be hopeless
Carrying all of my shame
I’d be lost in the way of rebellion
Never aware of his grace
But because of the Lord I‘m forgiven
Jesus declared I am clean
He has cancelled the record against me
Nailing my sins to a tree

Were it not for the Lord I’d be prideful
Measuring all my success
I would covet against those above me
(And) act as above those with less
But because of the Lord all my boasting
Belongs to the Christ who redeems
No amount of my working could save me
Praise God for his patience with me

Were it not for the Lord I’d be anxious
Worrying loss and disease
I would never find peace in my suffering
Never find joy or relief
But because of the Lord who is sovereign
He has comforted - he has sustained
In the Lord there is no senseless suffering
So, grace for today, I will pray

Were it not for the Lord and his promise
Dying would lead me to fear
I would cling to this earth and these treasures
Thinking I’d miss something here
But because of the Lord I have heaven
A home where the saints will remain
It is there where I’ll see my Redeemer
And sing to the Lamb who was slain
