WEN 10" Variable Speed 4212T Drill Press REVIEW (and unboxing and assembly)

Ойын-сауық

We got a new tool in the workshop and Fox does an unboxing and assembly and review of the WEN 4212T 10" Variable Speed Drill Press! 😁
Drill presses tend to be pretty straight-forward, and this one tries to be even more straight-forward with a simple way to adjust the speed! After having it for a while, this may be the best drill press!

    The 4214T model comes with the work light and extended table. For like an extra 35 bucks. Still seems like a great value and I also really like the adjustable speed control. Having that level makes it much easier to adjust on the fly.

    The laser guides being battery operated is so you can align the boards safely without it being powered on. And you can get a clip on light off amazin for 5$

    Absolutely. I'd rather select a light attachment that actually works than pay an extra $8-10 for a press with a light that doesn't work the way I need it to work.

    If you go often from little brillbits to huge drillbits and from wood to metal to who-knows-what, it sure makes it convenient to change the speed without having to open up the top and move around belts. 👍

    I just bought this drill press, great video on the details and the unboxing! This will come in handy as I have not opened mine yet. Coincidentally my thoughts on this drill press when I purchased it was that it seemed to be taller than the other ones in its category so my plan all along was to cut a section off of the column so I'm happy to see I'm not the only person with that thought lol. I'm hoping the collar at the bottom is removable as I would like to chuck it in a lathe and use a parting tool but I will find out for myself tomorrow. 👍👍

    I believe the flange at the bottom is pressed in. I didn't try to remove mine. I also considered chucking the column in the lathe, but in the end, the simplest and quickest solution was really just using a hacksaw. 😉👍

    Thanks for the review. I also don't love the laser. The adjustment is about as crude as you can imagine, and with its grainy red light, it actually obscures the drill point somewhat. Eyeballing the drill bit point and cranking it down into the workpiece while powered off will be more accurate. I'm probably going to keep the laser powered off most of the time. The speeds are continuously adjustable without taking the top off and moving belts to different pulleys, which is great. Re height, I was used to a floor-standing 14" drill press, so this Wen seemed small. Anyway, having the drill table a bit below eye level is nice for accurate work. So this tool really calls for its own stand, maybe 30" tall, somewhat shorter than the usual workbench height. I'm going to be building one soon. Re adjustments and controls, the crank is a little sticky when you start driving the chuck down, probably from rough machining and lack of lubrication. I wish I could squirt some oil on the rack and pinion, but I don't know how to get to those bits yet. The lack of a light is easily fixed. You can get cheap LED lights with flexible arms for $12 or so. But my shop is well lit, and I haven't felt the need for additional lighting yet. But I do feel the need for a larger table with a fence and stop. Wen makes one, but there are lots of plans and descriptions for making your own. I'll have to see what will work best for me. Anyway, thanks again!

    I have the 10" without the lovely variable speed lever. It .. has.. a ... light. Frankly the variable speed is a good trade for the light. I only paid 50 bucks for mine. It drills holes. It does what it is supposed to do but I am too lazy to change the belt position for slower or faster speeds.

    I just put my Wen together and ran it. My unit was loud too, but there was no solenoid snapping noise. To adjust to speed while it was running was hard to move. Do you know if the hex nut can be loosen to make it easier to adjust? Thank you buddy. Just love that cat. You treat it really goodThank you

    You should be able to pop it off if you put a wedge of some sort between the top of the chuck and that flange right above it on the spindle.

    question cutting 4" off what did you use to cut it, also does this have the power and how it that variable speed lever any issues since this video? thanks

  • @SculptyWorks

    @SculptyWorks

    Жыл бұрын

    I used a hacksaw to cut the 4" from the column. First I thought I was going to be all fancy and put it on the lathe and all that, but sometimes the simplest solutions are the best! 😊 I love this drillpress. I don't normally abuse my tools, so I have not done anything that would have bogged it down or anything. It's done everything I've asked of it since I got it and it does it well! The variable speed lever is quite stiff, to the point that if the drillpress isn't steady or bolted down, you could move it around when changing the speed, but I have had no issues with any of it since I got it.

    Thanks for the info, i thought i do the cut also with a band saw or hack saw. i want this saw to be at 30" tops, would be nice if they just had a column option with a built in led light. The variable belt drive is what sold me on this and the mods you did are what i will do.
