I hang up and called my bank and the person on the other line told me to do what they were telling me to do….by the way, I was trying to get into my account and this warning show up to call a certain number because my account was blocked….I called the number and they wanted my info and they were willing to walk me thru steps…that’s when I called my bank, chase, and the lady told me to do as I was told…than I looked at the back of my ATM card and called that number and sure enough, smart people on the other line told me that it was a scam and the link was fake but it really looked like the link for chase bank. We women panic and when in panic mode, it’s hard to think…what has been helping me is that I am slow and was thinking about the words they were saying and it did not make sense plus my job gave us information about scams. I guess, I was just blessed to figured it out

Why would Wells Fargo be able to "protect" her money in their special "fraud" account, but not in her own? It's CLEARLY a scam. She made this mistake, it is not her bank's responsibility to fix this.

100% I straight up lie about everything I say on the phone whenever someone calls me. If they want money, I default to say let me get my Trump credit card. If they are talking about health or life insurance i tell them I smoke 8 packs of cigarettes a day. If they ask about a car, I drive a 1981 Yugo. If they ask about retirement, I tell them I play the power ball every week and have an interior wall stuffed with cystal meth that will last for years. If they ask for a social security number I ask which one, I keep the social of every person I kill.

The lady did it to herself by giving out her personal information to someone who called her! As a former banker, more than likely the banker said..."We're all with customers now but as soon as one of us gets done, we will assist you immediately, otherwise, you can use one our phones to contact the wire department to try to stop the wire." I've worked for 3 major banks, and I can tell you that if a banker were to assist her immediately, the banker would still have to call the wire department for assistance. The banker has no power to cancel wire transfer once it's being processed. I bet when the victim couldn't get help immediately because all of the bankers were with customers, she said "Well, if I can't get help right now, then I'm going to another branch!" which the banker probably replied..."That may be an option if you can't wait for a banker to get done with his/her client." How would you feel if a banker who was helping you said to you..."Sorry, I can't help you anymore because a customer just came in with a problem bigger than yours."

I worked for Wealth Management pretty much the equivalent of a Banker and although I couldn't stop one myself, I could get to the appropriate departments in minutes by using back-office channels, which would take minutes. @@kevinp8108 the biggest flaw in this is there is no hold and verification from Wells Fargo. I submitted a domestic wire transfer (in the thousand dollars) from my Citibank account to another bank. It did not go through until Citibank representative calls/texts me multiple times (because I didn't answer their calls/texts). I didn't call them to verify and guess what... Citibank canceled my wire. I resubmitted it. Long story short, I contacted them to verify it was me. They release the fund hours later. If a bank allows customers to transfer that large amount of money over online banking without verification or hold, I'd take my money elsewhere. That is a huge red flag.

If I were a banker, I would’ve canceled my appointments to help this poor woman recover her money. If anything, that would show other bank clients how dedicated you are to protecting their money. Be a trustworthy bank. Be a reliable bank. Now, how this woman didn’t realize this was a scam when it’s all over the news is beyond me. She learned her lesson!

The average WF banker in SF takes home about $3,000 per month without bonuses. That is more than the average cost of rent for a 1 bedroom 700 sq ft apartment ($3,300). Bankers rely on sales bonuses to make ends meet. But, I'm sure these lowest level employees will be fired and executives will not change a single thing.

Or do what I do, tell them that your brother is a bank manager at Wells Fargo & he'll take care of the situation. But, thanks for letting me know. Then hang up.

I was at a different bank's branch. The online was down. The woman was at the branch and they just sent her away. She told them the police said to go to a branch. The ditzy teller told her that there was nothing she could do if the online was down. The teller would not even get anyone to call for the customer. I was next and tried to tell the teller that the fraud seemed a lot more important than the cashier's check I needed. This is the type of customer service we're getting.

I don’t have a masters degree or anything and I have had a stroke and it has caused me not to be as smart as I once was, but I know not to wire anyone or anyplace my money!!! I know that I have had my phone ring and the caller ID stated it was from my own phone number so clearly caller ID isn’t to be trusted because people can make it look like it coming from somewhere else. I never answer my phone unless I know for sure who is calling, I let people leave a message and I listen to it right away. This teacher should be a well educated person and I know things can catch you off guard and perhaps you’re not at your best at the moment. Many people still have “brain fog” from Covid but if you started your day with no intentions of making a large withdrawal or large wire transfer, just stick to your original plan. I am sorry they scammed the lady but in life we learn from our mistakes. When your mistakes have consequences you’re far less likely to make that choice again!!!
