I want to lighten my roots, so I did a patch test on a small section of my hair. I applied a highlift colour only on the newly grown root area. I used Wella Koleston Perfect Special Blonde in the shade 12/81 mixed with a 30 volume developer. I have previously highlighted hair and the hair turned purple in the places where the highlift color had touched the already highlighted hair. Based on other videos I have seen online this doesn't happen with other brands of high lift colour. Do you have any tips?

I would say in my experience of using the highlift 12/ range from Wella the tones that are in this range and the one you have chosen 12/81 will deposit the tone blue/ash (/81) as well as lifting. So on previously hilighted hair it will deposit tone so yes you may be left with purple or blue tones in these areas. I know it’s very hard not to overlap on these areas. Possibly protect with conditioner before application of tint if you are happy with colour on virgin hair. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.

@@hairupideas thanks for answering. Do you have any suggestions as to what other highlift shades or brands I could use that do not leave a purple/blue residue on the overlapped area, but can still down down the warm/orange undertones?

I only work with Wella so I really couldn’t recommend another brand as I have no experience with other colours. Also I would need to have you sitting in my chair and have you hair in my hands to really give you proper advice. Maybe reconsider a hi-lift tint and go slow and low with some bleach. As in low developer 4% ? hi lights ?

On a natural level 6-7 you will not get the level of lift you would get from bleach. This client is white mostly at the front hence I’m covering the hair not lifting. Stick to bleach if you prefer a light bright blonde. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching

Hi 😃 I have a new client with similar roots.. She likes the warmer tones not white blonde.. she is lighter on her ends than your client ...I was considering lifting her up with a 12/0 and 12/1 and 12% but worried about her greys. Her last hairdresser did a 12 ash with 10 vol but have never heard of that. Should I do the highlift or try your combo with the 99/0? Thanks so much😃 she doesn't get foils done just a tint.

Hi there thanks for watching this video. I agree with you if the clients colour is lighter on the ends than the client in this video then yes probably use colours from the 12/ range as you will get maximum lift. 12/0 is a good starting colour. Depending on how much lift you need I would say stick to 9% if possible just thinking of scalp sensitivity especially if she is only had 10vol (3%) on her scalp before. Hope that helps 🤍

Can you do a wella 12/1 with 10vol? I just have never heard of that before

@@coletteburley6547 Well I would use 10vol with a toner for blondes ranted than lift or coverage with a tint. So for me the 12 range being hi lift tint it would need to be 9% (30 vol) I’ve never heard of the above. But us hairdressers have quirky ways of working 🤎

My mother-in-law has the same roots. But I have choosen 3 colour - 10/1, 9/1,8/1😅 we have got nice colour, but a little bit grey. In last time I used 88/0 and 8/1. But with time colour became darker. Could you recommend which number of colour I could add for colour wasn't too cold? I have already 2 packages of each color (10/1, 9/1,8/1) and I want to spend them (if it possible😅)

You could try just 9/1 on its own with 6% developer or add some base colour 9/0 also as this will add depth without it going darker. Other options of colour from the tints you have would be 88/0 1/4 + 10/1 3/4 + 6% 10/1 + 9/1 equal parts which makes 8/1 if both are mixed together. My favourite mixture is 9/0 + 9/1 equal parts with 6%. Ensure to measure formula correctly preferably with scales and full saturation with application. If you think hair is to dark from using 88/0 you may need to lighten this area before using shades mentioned above. Hope all this helps. Thanks for watching

This video is for the purpose of giving a taster of colours i use. This isn’t the video for you if your expectation is a full explanation of how to colour hair. As every hair professional knows it’s not as simple as that and it cant be explained in a 2 minute video. Not sure what you mean by charisma???

Hi there. I havent used Wella for a while and was just wondering if their formulas have changed? We were told not to mix the double bases with anything else as it takes away the coverage? How have you found this lasts and covers?

Yes it’s changed new rules for double base. Koleston Formulated with ME+ dye technology was the switch. This new formula helps to reduce the risk of developing a new allergy to hair colour.

In the video he shows the measurements on the scales. I think it was 27 grams of 99/0 and 10 grams of 9/81.

I recently put the 9/81 with 1.9 pastel developer on my hair from roots. It did come out a bit darker than I wanted so was wondering if I could used the 99/0 and 9/81 with 6% devolper like you in the video from roots to ends?

Hi there 1.9% would giveaway more toner effect rather than a coverage application shown in video. So if you are after total coverage that will appear a little lighter then yes go for above formula with either 4% or 6%. The more lighter/white your natural base is are the lighter you will be. @@Reber33 if you already have previously coloured hair as in its been lightened then just apply to roots. If you are starting from just your original application of 9/1 with 1.9% then it’s hard for me to say without seeing you hair. Bit air all depends on how dark your natural hair colour is. Hope that makes sense

@@Reber33 Pastel will not lift. You said your staring point was similar to my lady she had lots of white so that’s why it came out not to gold. I would maybe add some hilights to break up the gold. It’s so hard without seeing your starting point. The darker the root the holder the result

I would like to achieve this hair colour on my hair which is grey all over and shoulder length. The front is quite white but the back is similar to your client’s colour. If I use the exact combination on my hair will it be a similar colour to your client’s. Also what is the ratio of colours and developer.?

Probably best to ask your hairdresser as it all depends on any previous colour services you have had on your hair. If you haven’t any colour at all in your hair then application of this colour is key as roots take quicker than mid lengths and ends. The ratio of white to the darker areas is also a consideration when choosing ratio of colour. For this video I used 25g 99/0 + 12g 9/81 and then equal parts 6% welloxon developed for 30mins. ( Roots only) I’ve put all the details in the description. Sorry rookie error I didn’t put it in video. Thank you so much for watching

Oh thankyou so much for replying it's really helped me I'll do equal parts as I feel it will come out quite nice as her her is very similar to your model in the video she is 50 % Grey and underneath quite darker grey I've used 99/0 on her before in foils t section at college but I was going to apply all over roots this time but she dosnt want to be dolly Parton lol so I thought the other formular would counteract that andany yellow or orange thankyou again I am keeping following your tutorials iam still learning x

I dye 99/0 with 9/16 but it is too warm and has orange tones. I want to achieve a very cool blonde, level 9. My hair is rather gray. What are the best level 9 paints to mix?

Depends on starting point and how dark your base is. If the end result is a cool level 9 then maybe you need to prelighten the hair to a 9 or ten to then tone. Hope that helps. Can I ask why 99/0 ?

@@hairupideas I use 99/0 because it is recommended for alternative gray hair; my natural gray-white hair always manages to be dyed with a small amount of harmful substances. What else can he try? Which level 9 paints are the coolest cold?

@@alili7868 I use 99/0 on resistant hair to get full coverage. So maybe switch to 9/0 and 9/1. Or you could hilight the darker areas to a level 10 and then tone with colour touch to blend white and hilighted areas. Hard to give you advice without seeing your hair and having it in my hands.

Lovely outcome! Is this the same lady you did a video with a while back using an ash shade? I'm wondering why the choice of 99/81 instead of 9/01? Which gives better coverage for someone with a lot of grey and white? I'm looking to be a buttery blonde but have extremely resistant grey+white hairs. Thank you!

Thank you for watching both videos. Indeed it’s the same customer. Both videos were done after each uk lockdown so lots of roots to cover. Latest video was winter grown out so wanted to cancel some of the gold that shines through on the darker areas towards the back and underneath. This customer is so up for change on each visit so I use all sort of formulas. It really does give me chance to explore all of the 9/ range from Wella. 9/81 instead of 9/01 this time was just preference at combating some of the gold. Hope that explains. Let me know if I can help. Definitely stick with 99/0 in your mixture if you have resistant hair. Measure with scales, full saturation of root and 45 mins development time is a must. I have lots of roots to cover as well (about 4 inches worth) so my next question is if I should pull the Koleston Perfect through to the rest of my highlighted blonde hair for the full duration or only pull through for the last 5 minutes? @@SA2302 if we go for 45mins total development time then time for 30 on roots and pull through for the last 15. That will even out the band between old and new colour. Yes ratio is equal parts 1:1. Good luck and thank you for your kind comments

I've got a client with similar colour and length and density in the video but lots of grey at least 4 inches underneath the back of her hair will it still cover that by applying to just the roots and how much of each formular did you use in the above video please sorry iam just level 2 still learning thankyou or if anyone can advise

Yes given the right coverage and developer. Also take into consideration is hair resistant and also development time. If the hair is 100% white or if you have natural colour also you may get a more golden look.

@Lau-ep3xv you could just try 9/0 on its own. It depends on what time you are after 9/1 with give you ash and 9/3 gold. There are lots of 9/? options. I would look at previous colour and try and match it to that or if it’s on virgin hair assess what tone you want. I would always use Welloxon developer with either 4% or 6% and develop for 30-45 for full coverage.

I can’t say as I don’t know the amount of root colour you are doing ? It can very on 4 week to 8 week growth. Just mix and amount with the above a ratio and then you can always mix more if needed. I always start with 40g for a root touch up. 20g of each colour and 40 g of developer. Please be aware this is root touch up service not a full head colour

99/0 is for resistant white/grey hair. You could opt for 9/0 or 10/0 with 10/1 to start the transition from the hi lift tint you’ve been using.

My hair is white in front and more dark back. I use 12 and 12.1 back and in front i use 10.31 with 30 o. I like the blond in the advertisment you have. 12.81 and 12.96 but i dont think that i will have the same result. Because my hair is thick. What do you suggest?

Without having you hair in my hands I cannot give you an exact formula. Drop your developer to 6% or 4% with a ten range for the front section for better grey coverage. Thick hair just needs more saturation with your chosen colour to get full coverage. Hope that helps

I always add tone hence I suggested 10/1. I prefer a cooler blonde. 99/0 on its own can be a warmer gold blonde.
