Well done China! Eastman SB59 - Unboxing and 1st Impression

Музыка

The story and evolution of Eastman Guitars is very interesting and it sounds like their experience will result in very high end guitars at a very reasonable price. Here is my first in depth look at one of their solidbodies.

    I know this is an old video but I just want to say that I work in a shop that sells Eastman guitar and they are as he is saying. They are amazing instruments! I think the reason Eastman are doing so well is because they have so many different choices at different price points, but even their cheap stuff is great too. Heck, I even own a Eastman Acoustic guitar at home, how could i not?! Personally I'm not a fan of the antique varnish (which is another word for slight relic) finishes but some people like it I guess. I just played a SB55DC and I was blown away, so is every one of my customer when try an Eastman guitar for the first time. Great stuff!

    I have one in amber antique varnish with Seymour Duncan Antiquities in it. It’s the best sounding, feeling and finished singlecut I’ve ever picked up. The frets are perfect and the tones are full bodied and classic. A few friends have tried it and were blown away. If people can get over the fact it doesn’t have Gibson on the headstock I think they’d find they’d have one in a heartbeat. It also stays in tune way better than my Gibson LP Standard.

  • @stevejon381

    I agree 100% with what you say here. There's still a lot of snobbery about this product because it doesn't have the 'right' logo on the headstock. I have no issues with tuning. The tone and sustain that I get is fantastic and it's such an inspiring instrument to play.

  • @larryh.3173

    @larryh.3173

    I totally agree here with everything you said-ESPECIALLY the tuning. My G'son LP Trad Pro needs tuning twice a song (no joke), but my Eastman SBs are both SO stable, tuning-wise, that I am both constantly thankful and stunned. (Yeah, I own BOTH this 'V' model with Antiquities and the glossy nitro sunburst with SD '59s-quite different tonally, each superb. BTW, I'm selling my LP now since these two SBs basically eat it for breakfast at every turn. Not exaggerating.)

  • @ernestochang1744

    @ernestochang1744

    5 жыл бұрын

    all you need to have a stable G string tuning is 1 a properly cut nut (sorry gibson this excludes 84% of your carftmanship) 2. the right lubricant (usually lead pencil is fine although there is amrket for that if you wish) and numero 3 and the most important of them all for the love of all that is holy, theres a reason why back in the 50s we had a wound G string, and we still do on acoustic guitars. Basically by wounding the G string the same as a D string and E and A you have the solid basis for good tension stability tuning and intonation, where al lof this goes wrong is that back in the 50's ernie ball a teacher that was teaching students how to play guitar noticed that the G string people could not bend them as easily so he went on to create plain G strings for guitars, his strings became so popular he had to open a shop to keep up with demand and thus created the standard set of Guitar strings, however nobody bothered to have it scientifically tested, and scientifically prove that having a wound G string could make your tuning stability better... until now. Not only has it bee nscientifically proven that the wound G string increases tuning stability, it has also been proven that Fender stratocasters with the PRO STAGGERED single coil pickups (the ones where the magnetic pole of the B string is the lowest magnet out of them all and the G string magnet is the highest out of them all) suddendly have a more balanced volume output without adjusting the Staggered pole pieces

    I played a 1955Jr given to me by my grandfather for 35 years and I got a tele and a strat but I really wanted a Les Paul. So I tried many guitars but I never got on that I just really loved. I bought one for way too much and sold it a month later. It just didn't have the same feel and tone that I was wanting in a Les Paul. My friend who is a professional musician got an Eastman and let me have a go on it and it was awesome. The tone was spot on,and the feel was just like the 55Jr I played for so many years. I still have the Jr and that's what I compare all single cut style guitars to. The Eastman my good friend turned me on to was the one. I will be getting one hopefully that sounds and feels like his or better and it won't cost me $15,000.

    You may be the single most prominent sales rep for Eastman. I saw another review that left me cold. I didnt enjoy the instrument. Seeing you riff through a number of amps let me hear what it might sound like on my rig. Good on you for doing that. I love the Kluson-like tuners...the deep colorization really looks very vintage. Camera angles from the headstock end really allow me to see that vintage vibe of 60s 70s era single cut guitars. And unlike the other video...this is a set neck. Very impressive. That was something I did not know. The tail piece is a string through design yes? Is it adjustable if I were to top wrap it? Lastly...seeing as it just came from the box....I wonder if you might give a one month update to see if the tuning stability has increased with some playing and allowing the strings to fully stretch out? That is one issue it seems many Gibson owners complain about. All in all it seems to me that Eastman has a winner on its hands and I cant help but think in 40 years time there will be a guitar reviewer out there who will be cataloguing all the Eastmans like Trogley does for Gibson. I thoroughly enjoyed your review. And I have a new bucket list guitar to look out for.

    I own a really nice LP, and, IMHO, between the slightly different, somewhat larger shape, these Eastman SBs sit even nicer across my knee. (I own two SBs, the varnish and glossier models.) Heck, I even somewhat prefer the shape of the Eastmans (but, FWIW, I've never attached all that much importance to the name on a headstock anyway; it's the actual GUITAR I evaluate, not the company.) Blasphemous, I know, but I actually prefer these guitars to my LP™. IMO and IME.

    I can't remember the last time I sat through an entire review for a guitar - and I cannot thank you enough for shedding new light onto the guitar industry and the mainstream guitar player. As you've mentioned in your other video, "with the right guidance and training, anybody can build a fantastic guitar". No truer words have been spoken, and I sincerely hope that Eastman delivers a big knockout punch to that other 'bigger' brand on the other side. Even if not, let the blind lead the blind, and let them drown in their own ignorance. I've been looking for the perfect single cut for a long time. Now I know what to get.

    @@stevejon381 That's very kind of you Steve, thank you. Having purchased many guitars before, I'm familiar with the value I receive for the money I pay - variable components such as the tuners, bridge, electronics, pickups, and even the frets to a certain extent, do not have to be absolutely flawless; however, workmanship issues such as the finish and overall construction would need to reflect the price paid. Having said that, I am very confident that Eastman will be delivering on those aspects. I will let you know at the end of the year.

    Guitar sounds great. It has that resonant woody thing that happens when they use good wood and it has been dried properly and stuff. Sounds really good. I've been waiting for this review. It's funny listening to Henning play this guitar the tones coming from it remind me of old classic rock in a way that listening to modern gibsons doesn't do. You know what I mean? This sounds more like a les Paul than any gibson I've heard lately. That's great for Eastman but idk what that means for Gibson. I hope the new guy does something special with that company. I had lollar imperials in my 2016 standard before I sold it. It didn't sound like this. I kept the pickups because they are fantastic. I mention this because it's not just the pickups making this guitar sound good. They help but that is good wood and a well made instrument. To me lollar pickups allow the guitar to speak. Like a good mic will allow the singer to shine, a good pickup allows the guitar to shine through and lollar pickups do that better than any I've tried at least to my ear. But wtf do I know? Nothing!!!! Nada! I'm an ass and no one should listen to me. 😁 I also have Lollars in my strat. I would put them in every guitar I own if I could. If you have the means to get a set you should. He makes amazing pickups.

What the reviewer said spec-wise is correct. When the spec list from the Eastman website was shown, it was for the SB59 Nitrocellulose. Slight mistake. The SB59/V has Lollar Imperial Custom Wound humbucker pickups, while the SB59 Nitrocellulose has Seymour Duncan Classic 59 humbucker pickups. (Also, the V stands for Varnish).

    The middle position usually sounds like the pickups are fighting those sound very balanced and pleasing. Very articulate pickups. The cutaway seems like it would be easier to get up to the dusty part.

    After watching this I ordered an eastman Sb 59 sunburst,first i was blown away it is as good if not better than a custom shop gibson les Paúl, and I should know I’ve owned a paul kossof custom shop and a made to measure 59 burst. They were both 4 times more than the Eastman and the Eastman is a one piece mahogany body a one piece neck,bone nut gotoh tuners gotoh tailpiece and bridge AND THE FRETS AND FRETWORK ARE ORGASMICALLY BEAUTIFUL IVE NOT SEEN BETTER.......PLEASE BEFORE YOU BUY A NICE GIBSON HAVE A LOOK AT AN AN AMAZING EASTMAN FOR A QUARTER OF THE PRICE.....oh and Thankyou for tuning me in to Eastman.

    I realise I pestered you a few times about Eastman, so it's great to see you playing one. I wonder if the non vintage SB59 sounds any different with the Seymour Duncans that it has in it? Clearly a beautifully made instrument with a one piece body, I wonder what Gibson would charge for one like this? Once again, thank you Henning, hopefully get to seeing playing it a few times.

    I have one of each. The '59s in my glossier SB are a bit 'heavier' and thicker-sounding (in a great way), whereas the Antiquities in the varnish model come off as slightly lower output (haven't measured, just listened), maybe even somewhat 'twangier' I suppose. Tonally, the varnished model with Ants not only looks old but it kinda sounds it, too. At least to my mind. BOTH are absolutely fantastic in their own way and I find that they truly complement each other, both tonally and visually. Of course, all IMO and IME.

    This guitar rocks! I have an SB59/v in gold burst, also with the Lollar pickups. Amazing guitar.The acoustic sound - to start with - great! Custom shop material in my opinion. One piece back, long tenon - guitar vibrates from tip to toe. Great tones. Very comfortable to play. Cool and unique looks. Less than 4kg. I owned and own other double humbucker guitars: 2003 Gibson Les Paul Standard (love this one), LP Traditional (rather compressed sound), ES339 (not my thing) Heritage 535 (nice guitar), Music Man Steve Morse Y2D (great - more for modern sounds), PRS Custom 24 (nice and versatile), etc. Eastman SB59/v is my favorite of them all. It's - the Thing - for me right now. Feels "at home" when playing it. Any opinions? EytschPi - is there a chance to compare the SB59/v to an R8 or R9 - or a PRS singlecut?
