    For the cause! I was really hoping for a perfect cone in the middle, but this really just shows another great reason to use a hop bag for those big additions. For another point, I think the hops are pretty sketchy now that they're old, but I really should try to grab some new ones and make a quick pale ale or something to do a comparison before fully giving up on the old ones. Cheers!

    I saved all the wasted hops for you. It's better to bypass the whole beer thing (it's overrated) and just eat/drink hop sludge.

    Good stuff. I might have to look into a Boilermaker bulkhead and a whirlpool tube for my Spike kettle. The whirlpool arm I have with the spike kettle keeps pointing toward the bottom of the kettle during the boil.. keeping a fixed orientation would be better.

    I'm pretty happy with it so far. I didn't want to do a full review yet because I've only used it once and that was for a pilsner with minimal hops. I'll do a short 1 min review sometime when I get a few more brews done with it. Cheers!

    Since I live in the northern hemisphere and understanding coriolis effect, wouldn't setting up for a counter-clockwise whirlpool motion not make a lot more sense? I suspect it would be more efficient, since you would not be fighting mother nature, and it may ultimately result in more effective trub cone formation. There is a reason toilets in the northern hemisphere are designed to rotate counter clockwise when flushing...

  • @PartyTimeBrewing

    Seems like an interesting thing to look into. From some quick research, some people think it doesn't matter, but there apparently is a study from the 1970s that showed a 6ish percent increase in trub pile with the counter clockwise flow. Mine was simply setup because it wanted the whirlpool valve on the left of the drain valve. It is interesting to think about though. Apparently trub size and velocity of whirlpool makes a big difference as well, which is something I need to play around with. Cheers!

    I use the hop blocker by Blichmann but don't know how universal it is. It takes a bit of practice because you need to transfer slowly near the end of the transfer but seems to work well. I have a few of the mesh filters that came with the kettle when I bought it used, but haven't tried them out yet and I think they are probably close to what you bought. My worst transfer left about two gallons at the end for a 15 gallon batch. Cheers!

    @@PartyTimeBrewing I bought the standard 6" kettle screen and brewed an IPA with the hope of being able to ditch the hop basket and dump the hops straight in during whirlpool. It was a disaster. Thanks for the suggestion I will look into it!

    What's the point of a hop cone? What does it do?

  • @PartyTimeBrewing

    @PartyTimeBrewing

    2 жыл бұрын

    The point is for the hops to settle in the middle of the pot so you can get clearer wort when you transfer it to the fermenter. If it is done right you'll get less trub and hop transfer from the kettle. Cheers!

    @@PartyTimeBrewing Would a cold crash in the fermenter do the same?

  • @PartyTimeBrewing

    @PartyTimeBrewing

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@Rubio_Eric For the final product, the cold crash does the same thing. Even without the cold crash, it will mostly settle out over time. I think the purpose of the whirlpool is to get the maximum amount of clear(ish) wort from the boil kettle into the fermenter. Without the whirlpool it gets pretty messy at the bottom and can clog a pump if you are using one, especially with a highly hopped wort like a hazy or NEIPA.

    @Party Time Brewing cool. I might need to try that attachment. I have a whirlpool arm that came with my brewzilla but it doesn't really get the wort spinning good. I thought the whirlpool was just used to help with the whirlpool hops additions come in contact with the wort better. Appreciate the info man
