Welding Stress Cracks on a TW200 Frame | Riding across the Mojave Desert to Test my Skills
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
I have already welded the subframe brace and muffler bracket on my Yamaha TW200. Those repairs worked out well but I have one more thing I need to fix. I found some stress cracks forming on on the main frame behind the right foot peg. I'm pretty new to welding but I gave repairing these cracks my best shot. I did have to remove a lot of parts so I could get the welder in there but it could have been worse. once the repair was complete, I painted the frame, serviced the swing arm bushing, and put the bike back together. Will this weld repair hold up? To find this out I set out riding across the Mojave Desert to put my skills to the test. Hopefully this is the last welding video for a long time. thanks for watching and stay safe
I'm obviously not a professional welder so take my advice as a grain of salt.

Another great video. Even if people will never want to or have to weld the frame, just the part of the video showing removal and reattachment of the swingarm is an incredible bonus to this video. It's going to help a lot of people out. And you definitely do an amazing job of explaining everything in incredible detail. Especially torque specs. I don't know how many hours and hours you spent editing all of this, but great amounts of thanks!

Showed welding part of your video to my retired sheet metal worker father, he was horrified by your welding, he looked physically distressed. As someone who can't weld I'm impressed that you had a go but might have been better to have had a time served welder do such an important weld. Love the channel, sorry if my comment is a bit blunt.

They call the annealing, and yeah it does help. Once upon a time I was a certified welder, and part of the was taking the metallurgy class at the college. Your welds don't have to be pretty, as long as you get good penetration. It looks like you got that. Round surfaces like tube are the hardest thing to weld, because you are always changing position. Good job! That should work just fine.

Just a tip, when using flux core, make sure your positive current is going to the ground clamp and the negative to the torch. You want to put the heat into the metal. Also, get some "anti-spatter" spray and spray your metal surfaces before welding. The spatter will then just brush off. With thin metal, try moving a little faster. Moving slow on thin metal will definitely blow holes in the metal.

Interesting video. I am somewhat related to welding, so kinda want to leave a little word here. A little back story: I'm not a welder, but work in a department of a certain powerplant that is responsibile for quality check of welds that hold pressure up to 160 atmospheres and with temperature up to 540 celsium. We work here with different alloys and "usual" steel of different thickness, and we use both post-heat, pre-heat and basically heat treatment of welds. Weld itself is... quite messy, I'd personally recommend to "even" the metal of weld after finishing the job for better stress resistance. Pressure on weld always concentrates in uneven spaces, so the less of them there, the better. Welding a big bulge is usually a not too good thing, especially if its uneven. Next thing is post heat treatment. Well, actually its related to whole heat treatment thing. If you work with "usual" steel it is enough to just wrap the weld in insulation to not allow it to cool fast. But there are big but's here. This whole heat treatment works only from highly thick parts. For example for 1020's steel heat treatment starts from thickness of 20 milimeters and goes like: heat the welding parts to ~100-150 cel and then weld, after that wrap in insulation and let it cool for around 3 hours. If thickness of parts is lower than 20 mm heat treatment is unneeded because... It doesn't really change anything. With simple alloys like A182 heat treatment starts from around 12 mm. But in all cases heat treatment is done before and during weld or right after you finish. With the thickness of metal on the frame of TW200 it won't change much of its properties. Rather it could help to just hammer the weld (not too hard, to not damage it) a few times to relieve the weld stress. Not sure if this message will cause a holy war about heat treatment, but just wrote my thoughts on the case. Biggest advise would be to level and even the weld that you made and make smooth merge between weld and frame metal. *watches video till the end* Oh, it's been a year. Don't mind all what I wrote above :)

thank you! I may have to give brazing a try at some point
Just for the record voltage changes the width of the bead, amps control penetration. In the case of a constant voltage machine like your using wire speed is tied to amps, therefore more wire speed is more penetration. Additionally reducing contact tip to work distance (stick out) will also increase penetration. Not trying to go around correcting you just offering some useful information. This was something we were taught very early on in my welding engineering program, and something I have proved myself with robotic welding and cut/etch.
@TDubsKid
Жыл бұрын
thanks for the insight. makes sense. closer the tip to the work piece . less wire there is to melt so less resistance which translates to higher amperage. further away contact tip, more wire there is to melt so more resistance which decrease amps. I have a mig welder now, it's sooo much nicer to weld with compared to flux core

@@janeblogs324 you have no idea what you're talking about lol. Nor did I say gas was required. What I said was his theory is great, his best practices are spot on. But he is using self shielded flux core wire on a thin bike frame. It will never look good or weld good. He would have had way better results with a solid core with gas. But none the less he did a fantastic job with what he had.

for sure, mig or tig would be best for this kind of thinner stuff, but I just made it work with what I had, doesn't look the best but has good penetration and no worm holes. it's held up great after a year so i'm happy. maybe ill get a decent multipurpose machine someday and do a lot more welding, but don't have a lot of space for much extra equipment right now

@@TDubsKid you should. You show good skill. Coming from a professional welder.
One the best DYI educational vid I've seen. Great work. Did you have a camera person or did you do it yourself?

Wow! TDubsKid. That last stop in Sandy Valley before Vegas. I probably rinsed off your bike. (Annual fire department thing). Some crazy bikes run that ralley. Take some air out for the softs helps a lot. What a trip! :D

So much mud. Did you leave any on the trail? Great video man. Looks like an epic ride. Glad to see the welds are holding up.

This looks ace. I wish the UK had some more off road events that weren't just BMW GS fanboys going down a dirt path playing dress up off road with a 20k bike that will stay pristine the rest of its road life... give me a battered dual sport that will last forever any day.

yeah it was rad! yeah I hear the uk doesn't have as many places to ride off road. for sure!
Entertaining as always, great work. That Vegas ride was epic 👍🏾. You said it took 2 days but did you edit out the camping? Or did you stay at a hotel?

Well i wont commment the welding but im mechanical engineer and really liked the post heat treatment almost NOBODY does it. If i can mention preheat is a bit more important especially on alloyed steel but not essential on this one so here you did what you could with that post weld heat treatment. I welded a lot of cast alloy and chrome alloyed steel like car spindles and axles and post weld heat treatment is as essential there as preheat is.

Thank you! And yeah, youtube changed some stuff and I’m having a hard time trying to figure out if i need to select that box or not since i use affiliate links in the description, im thinking not because that note seems to refer to the video itself which this one did not have a paid promotion haha.
