Weld-Through Primer Shootout Upol - DupliColor - Steel-it - Seymour
I was in the market for some Weld-Through Primer but I couldn't make up my mind, so I decided to buy a few of them and test them out for myself. I compare the weldability, the spray characteristics and which ones handled the heat the best.

I used zinc Seymour today painting between 1/8 reinforcement plates and subframe pick up point in a bmw e46 rear subframe and it was absolutely horrible. I was Mig welding. And I’m a seasoned welder and this is by far the worst weld through I tried. Thanks for this video it was a help. I’m gonna give steel it and the copper stuff a try.
Could you try it again with thinner metal and less voltage? I feel like the voltage was so high that the discrepancies between the brands aren’t apparent enough and it just burns right through
I've been wondering about Steel-It ever since JK Gear and Gadgets recommended it. I'm glad you did a round up with some comparable results. Looking forward to your next video.

Thanks for watching Ross
The question is whether the primer maintains it's rust protection characteristics. Good old rustoleum high heat primer (2000 degrees) is the old stand by. bare metal where you weld but primed back sides.
Excellent test! So sad is not available,, I call Duplicolor and is discontinued
Great video! Lots of good information and tips! Thanks Edgar
How about Epodur 1890 Weld-Thru Primer? Also 3M 05917, Eastwood, POR 15 and SEM Products 39783. Thank you for doing these test videos!
I've been using the Upol Copper weld for a while, it can handle the heat the best. I also have used Steel-It, but I didn't know until later on that I was able to weld through it. Thanks for the comparison video.

Thank you for watching!
I heard others say the same thing, steel-IT and Upol or ZincWeld spray , they use it on 23rd Garage
Thanks for making this video. It's a huge help to me. Also, POR15 makes a weld-thru primer. So maybe consider that for a future video.

I've been using Eastwood, but the nozzle clogs almost immediately. Super frustrating...

I think that's the most frustrating part of it all.
I still am not sure of the burn through factor? I do thin sheetmetal. As in automotive rust repair and customizing. When boxing in a panel, say a rocker panel, I don’t always weld completely. A lot of it is spot welding or tacks.it is important that the covered areas not rust out again. So, this video has not convinced me that the spots where I would put a weld will not rerun t again. Could you do a video, geared more toward auto body style welding? Would love to see the results.
Great video man

Thank you! Cheers!
Very helpful, Thank you.
Seymour makes a stainless steel paint that I suspect is steel it with a different label
You should try IES inter-weld copper. I stumbled on it and have been using it ever since. Comparable to the U-Pol.

Sounds like it would make a great addition to the test, thank you for watching!
Ok, good video. I like the results. However! For me, and a lot of people like me, who are welding thin sheetmetal .
Is their any situation where the Duplicolor would be acceptable? Like in larger quantities where its more cost effective? Or does Steel-It win out even there?

For me and the amount/quantity that I use it would definitely still be Steel-it however if I had to use large quantities of it, production style, I would use the Duplicolor or cheaper version and just deal with welding over it.
Awesome vid
Great comparisons. I was looking to see if there were any cheaper alternatives comparable to steel it. Looks like I'll be sticking with steel it and apologizing to my wallet lol
Great video i wonder how the 3M cans hold up

Youre not supposed to weld through weld-thru primer! Lol
