This conservation and preservation makes me deeply appreciative of everyone at the Toledo Zoo. Reading about elephants I was truly amazed at the variety and complexity of elephants communications that are unseen by humans.

If you love learning about elephants, check out HERD (Hoedspruit Elephant Rehabilitation Development) sanctuary in South Africa. They have a 4 year old albino (pinkish) orphan elephant named Khanyisa (only 5% of elephants are albino)! They also have a new 4 month old baby boy elephant named Phensani. HERD has an 17 member elephant family made of male and female (orphans, saved adult elephants, and some born to the HERD). So, theirs is a unique structure...to have teen and older bull elephants to be in a HERD with cows (females)...as a family. This would not exist in the wild...since male elephants leave the family and join all-male herds or live solitary. This family-herd was started 27 years ago...when a 4 month orphan (Jabulani) needed a herd to raise him and 6 adults (male & female) were saved from farmers/animal conflict and brought there to "raise" the baby Jabulani. Hence, this herd's name is the Jabulani Herd. Check out their videos...very educational.

I love how the Moms touch there baby's. When there born . They love on them right away .

I used to live in Monroe Michigan and our family would often visit Toledo zoo. Our absolute favorite, was a gorilla who watched cartoons on tv. When the cartoons broke for commercial, the gorilla would turn his back on the tv….honest. We saw him do this repeatedly and I’ve never forgotten it. It was 1972. ❤️❤️❤️👍

Congratulations to Mama Renee and her Baby Boy and the team at Toledo Zoo. Miraculous ray of life. Beautiful how Mama Renee delivered and immediately cared for her baby and for her baby to immediately stand and find his mother's milk and nurse. Remarkable how most animals know that! ❤

I grew up in Toledo and spent every weekend at the zoo. I am now 67 years old and live in Arizona. How I wish I could go to the Toledo zoo again. I believe it is one of the greatest zoos ever!!!!
