As a C’s fan, I just realized Wemby actually helped the Celtics win a championship. In the 2nd-to-last game of the season, Wemby single-handedly carried the Spurs to a win over the Nuggets. This led to the Nuggets being knocked down to the 2nd seed and entering the playoff bracket with the Timbwerwolves. The Twolves were quite literally designed to beat the Nuggets, and that’s exactly what happened. The Nuggets match up well against the Celtics, and if they made the Finals, they probably would have repeated.

Obviously they would give him multiple looks and it would occasionally result in a double but they mostly played straight up and let him get whatever. They played to take away the lobs and corner threes. On picks, they would switch because Tatum was on the center and he's a fine defender. They would be happy having one of the guards switch onto Luka on a pick too. Even Horford and Tillman would play Luka straight up. When Porzingis was in, he'd play drop and that was the only time the defense really changed. On offense, the Celtics would attack Luka a lot. You mention Luka's flaws but the Celtics really game planned to pick apart those flaws. He needs to get in better shape so he's not gassing out by the 3rd quarter when a team like the Celtics game plans to go at him all game. We all thought that under the spotlight Kyrie would somehow perform better than he has in 10+ games previously vs the them but he didn't, he performed as expected which wasn't good. I mean the Mavs only scored over 100 points once and surprise surprise, they won that game.

No more limited play, it’s a good thing to see a player do anything - offensively or defensively - at any given time. The best players are the one’s with the least amount of weaknesses. Most of the players entering the NBA are not limited players, they just do what they have been asked to do. Before they can even expand their game, they are asked to specialise because the coach and GM don't plan for player development program, as they want to believe the players already know how to play basketball at a pro level. Fast forward 5 to 8 years, you end up with a highly specialised player who can't go left, shoot FT at a decent % rate, can't defend decently P'n R' or make basic read or passes but scores or defend in very specific contexts during a game. A team made up of 5 players who master the basic of the game, besides the skills that makes them stand out, will have a higher probability to win against one that relies solely on 2 or 3 star players to produce at high level of difficulty against anyone. That's why it's called team sport, the best team will high likely beat the poorly built team, there's nothing to deeply think about really. The problem is the ability to recruit the right personnel, players and coaches that can execute on a consistent basis in a highly competitive environment for 6 months...

Time to reevaluate how we rank the top players in the league, because someone being as limited on defense as Luka is can’t just be ignored when ranking guys or choosing an mvp

This is a interesting take on the evolution of the NBA - teams that want to make a run need 5 multi-dimensional players on the court, not just a superstar tandem & role players. Everyone has to have high bb IQ & decisionmaking skills. That’s a lot to ask from a league of players that were told to specialize
