hi there, ive always had trouble focusing, sitting still or generally doing a single task and have wondered whether or not i might have some form of adhd. Im currently a nursing student and too fixated on how to overcome these problems, my question is; is it a possibility that ive managed to trick myself into thinking i have these problems when in reality it isnt that bad

So I have diagnosed ADHD. I am in my late 30s and was only diagnosed like... i wanna say 5 years ago...? So the thing is... Adderall puts me to sleep... like it doesn't just make me a little groggy, it knocks me out like I've taken a sleeping pill. I know the general explanation for this... for people without ADHD it makes them overstimulated where people who actually have ADHD receive a calming effect from the drug… What I'm wondering is, are there other medications, specifically stimulants (other than Adderall) which are less likely to have this effect? I know the usual answer is, "if stimulants have crazy side effects, try non-stimulant medication," but my understanding is that they don't work as well… So, since Adderall is really the only thing I've tried, I would like to know about other avenues in terms of stimulant medications.

This is a psychiatrist in a very wealthy city not some seedy out of the way place. Hi Dr. I love this channel.. My question to you is does Prozac help a child with behavioral issues like self harming? Unfortunately my son lives with his dad and step mom half the time and he feels helpless in their home while his step mom mentally abused him targets him with put downs and excessive control her rules for him are different than his step brothers and she is an abrasive personality and hard to get along with. Her way or the highway. He feels trapped! They finally took him to the family doctor who prescribed prozac 10 mg. How will this help?

@Saroj. Thanks for the question. I'm very sorry to hear that you're having to deal with this side effect. I'll write up a blog post describing the options. Look for that in a few days. @@AskAPsychiatrist You are a great doctor. Have been subscribing to you for a while and you respond about my medication lamictal. Maybe you dont remember but you did host a meeting about clozapine. I am truly grateful that you respond quite thoughtful about clozapine. Sorry for bad english. My public goverment doctor pretty busy and always put me on medications that dont quite comfortable with me. For example valproic acid. I did not know that valproic acid can lead to liver abnormality until you point out in one of your videos. Dont quite remember which one. Until now I am truly grateful to have listen to your videos. Im not on clozapine yet. And thanks to you I found my suitable medication. It is expensive in my country (aripiprazole IM) but it works better for my condition. Keep up the good works. I hope I can keep in touch with you.
