Hello everybody - my name is Ian Ellis and I'm here to introduce you to a series of videos called Great Artists Steal. The aim is to help you improve your painting skills based on the methods I've developed teaching painting over the last 30 years.
In particular I will be showing you my two-colour mixing method that produces beautiful clean colors every time. We'll also be looking at great artists like Vincent van Gogh to see what we can 'steal' from them!
I'll be focusing on two areas: color and technique.
With color we'll be focusing on color mixing in two areas of color mixing. One is subtractive mixing which is physically mixing paint and additive mixing which is actually being aware of the contrasts of the colors coming off the painting, or mixing light.
Well, to do this what would we will be doing would be looking at great artists who've used the same ideas and so will be analyzing them with the idea of you learning from the analysis.
So Vincent van Gogh is one painter to look at, Hopper, Claude Monet and a couple of contemporary painters as well; Marlene Dumas and Luc Tuymans.
