Welcome to Great Artists Steal (2021): Improve Your Painting Skills with Ian Ellis

Hello everybody! My name is Ian Ellis, and welcome to Great Artists Steal! This is the channel where I present my thirty years’ experience as a teacher and 40 years’ experience as a painter to help you improve your painting skills.
So far I've presented 28 videos focusing on two-color mixing which is a new theory, a new idea, a new logic of mixing color.
What I've done is I've focused on three videos on color theory, explaining the logic of two-color mixing, and I've also created eight videos focusing on how two-color mixing can be used to mix individual colors, and I've got 17 videos focusing on how individual artists have created their colors using two-color mixing. Those artists were:
- Vincent van Gogh
- Edward Hopper
- Claude Monet
- Marlene Dumas.
The plan for the next batch of videos is to focus on the two-color mixing videos and look at a painter, a contemporary painter, called Luc Tuymans.
After that we'll go back in time to Cezanne, and what's interesting about Cezanne is that he used black for mixing. He still used two-color mixing but the black's interesting because it leads us to the Old Master palette. We'll look at Lucian Freud, Rembrandt, and Anders Zorn, and focus on how and why the Old Master palette is really good for skin color.
In addition to these videos, I plan to present interpretation videos. These are videos where I make an interpretation using my own visual artist skills, and the aim is for you to do the same. It's great fun and I hope you have a go!
It's a really exciting part of art for me - it's the main bit, the ideas - and I'll be starting off by looking at three great paintings, three modern masterpieces.
The first one is by Philip Guston - it's called 'The Studio'. The second everyone knows - 'Guernica' painted in 1937 by Pablo Picasso, and the final one not as many people know about but it's an absolute gem of a painting that influenced surrealism. It was called metaphysical art at the time and it was a big influence on people like Magritte and Salvador Dali. The artist is Giorgio de Chirico is called 'The Song Of Love' painted as early as 1914.
Please don't forget to subscribe! And I really do like to hear from you in the Comments section. I like to hear the questions, observations and any requests!
So I look forward to seeing you in the future. I hope you enjoy the videos - bye for now!!

I'm so happy to be able to continue your amazing classes even though I moved to France. Could you please do Ruben's palette 🎨? I'm trying to copy his portraits and so far it has been just a total disaster. Oh and glazing tuto with oil paintings? Well obviously if you have time. Thank you so much for doing these videos, even more important during the lock down, keep up please 🙂 Blanka

Hi Blanka, It is great to hear from you. I am glad to continue to help you. Rubens used an old master palette of yellow ochre, red ochre ( indian red is the closest if you can not find one), black and white. If can find a video of Carravaggio’s technique on youtube, the one of a woman with a odd masculine neck, This is similar to Rubens’s palette I think. I will get round to glazing and I will do one on Rubens just for you. Keep in touch Ian

@@GreatArtistsSteal Hi Ian. Yes, it's me! I've produced something like 10+ paintings since lockdown in both oil and acrylic and paint almost every day. It's kept me sane. I hope to return when it's safer to do so and would be keen to do portraits.
