Composer: Johann Sigismund Weiss, Silvius Leopold Weiss
Artists: Duo Inventio, Stefano Sabene, Mario D’Agosto
Having only survived in the lute tablature known as the London manuscript, the four sonatas for transverse flute and lute assembled here - three by the German Baroque composer Silvius Leopold Weiss, and one, perhaps a little less sumptuous musically speaking, by his brother Sigismund - were reconstructed especially for this recording, with the two artists Sabene and D’Agosto drawing on an abundant source of contemporary 18th-century repertoire (in particular the works of the great flute virtuoso of the time, Johann Joachim Quantz) in their attempt to correctly evaluate the thematic material offered in the tablature and research the best possible response from the traversière. The choice of tessitura, the indication of ornamentation, and the nature and distribution of musical sections were all conceived taking into account the stylistic intent, with Sabene and D’Agosto seeking to highlight the range of textures and colours the traversière is capable of producing in relation to the specific characteristics of the lute.
Demonstrating a high artistic level and emulating the best German compositions of the period through their synthesis of the French and Italian styles, these sonatas’ solidity of form and delightful thematic invention place them firmly on a par with the arrangements for traversière and basso continuo or harpsichord written by the major composers of that era such as Bach and Handel. Sabene (also a prolific conductor of early music ensembles) and D’Agosto, both of whom enjoy international careers and makes regular recordings for CD, television and radio, form an engaging partnership, traversing with flair and ease this tiny area of the Baroque period’s rich and varied instrumental tapestry.

This kind of music travels me back in time in a different era. Gives me the feeling of an existing elvish music
Nobody recognizes the talent of these musicians but I can’t recognize the genius of these pair. True genius
Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful combination of two sublime instruments in their perfect setting.
In the abridged version of the painting given at the facade two unusually smiling faces of rough looking guys could be seen. As the musical instruments were not visible in that portion of the painting I thought the artist could have painted two robbers! My curiosity led me to click and open the program which ultimately led to the enchanting music. I thoroughly enjoyed the heavenly music and one more maestro has been added to the newly found treasures! The accidental encounter was worthwhile. Incidentally, nobody has dwelled on the artwork and the painter!Nevertheless, thanks for encountering two protagonists of the painting, mistook by me as robbers which ultimately lead to the enchanting music. My sincere apologies to everyone who got offended by my observations especially to the two musicians in the painting whom my ignorance led me to regard them as robbers. Yes they robbed my heart musically. Thank you Brilliant Classics for uploading. Enjoyment of another kind, really!
Despite how lively the music can be, there's something inherently soothing about the lute and flute combo. It's the one-two punch I need to rest, thanks for the upload!
For me, transverse flute is the one of best instruments!! Thanks so much for those sonatas. I feel as in a real concert!!

Curiously the flute in the painting here looks to be a recorder.

I like the new update where at the bottom of the video window we can see which piece is currently playing! Super helpful.
Einfach wunderbar!
Wonderful! Transverse flute ❤️❤️❤️ Love this album & had forgotten all about it. What a happy rediscovery ☺️☺️☺️
Amazingly charming and elegant. Thanks for sharing and uploading. ❤️🎼🎵🎶👏☘️🇮🇪
So beautiful- it just about takes physical pain away. That's powerful!
my 1st exposure--exquisite! I 1st heard Quantz's flute music when I was 20.....that was ages ago. The flute has always fascinated me--I am a fiddler and singer who performs in charities in Melb.

I wouldn't doubt this was written with Quantz in mind. He was at Dresden at the same time as Weiss.

Compared to Bach, there are not many CDs on the market and the number of guitar arrangement books is very small as well, so it's very nice to see this recent upload! A lovely performance with great recording quality! Thanks, Brilliant Classics! Btw: Bach was born 1685 and Weiss was born 1687 - both died in the year 1750.
Great for working, healing or simply enjoying. Thank you.
Come sempre eccellente... Grazie.

There seems to be no sheet music at all available for these suites! How sad, I would have loved to play them (I'm a flautist myself). Does anyone know of a place I could get hold of the scores for both parts??
CDs?

I have to look into the different types of harpsichord. Some I really like, others I don't at all. I always love, guitar or lute for continuo. The playing here is excellent but the recording not so much. Sounds quite dull to me.
