WEIRD WEAPONS - Final Fantasy Sword!

Square Enix, the makers of the 'Final Fantasy' game asked me to make a sword from the upcoming XVI release to be displayed in the Tower of London Armouries - how cool is that!?!
Matt Easton from Schola Gladiatoria and I get together sometimes to talk about weird weapons and this is certainly one of those, so I wrapped it up and handed it over for the big reveal. Then we talk about it seriously; how it was made, historical parallels and whatever else that comes to mind.

Actually not wrong around the 12:06 minute mark, the in-game description describes the sword as being a family heirloom that's passed down, having originally been part of a legendary set of 7 swords crafted within the flames of a mythological volcano. The swords in the game world tend to all be rather realistic and grounded, except for most of the ones wielded by the protagonist, as they are either relics or crafted from magical materials.

"Pride" might not be the best description since "pride" is usually something you feel for yourself (or someone you are close to) but I think what you may actually be feeling is "freudenfreude" which is basically feeling happy for someone else's joy/success. It's a form of positive empathy and the opposite of "schadenfreude", or taking pleasure in others misfortune.

@@ReelBigFan 100% and I feel a lot of freudenfeude for Tod when it comes to this sword. Sadly schadenfreude is more common among people. The Germans clearly have better words for this than the English language. In Norwegian we have a word that is "skadefryd" that means exactly the same as "schadenfreude", and as you see is it not that differently written. I have no idea if we have borrowed it from German, or it comes from a old Germanic or a old Norse word and maybe the word was one time borrowed from old Norse There are for sure very many words in the English language that have their origin in old Norse. The history of languages is very interesting and complex.

So it would be a matter of keeping the weight down on what's already a pretty big old sword, then because its long it'll also need quite a bit of strength too. When I look at a sword in a museum, I am reminded of the miners, the merchants, the smith, AND the soldiers. That sword is called Invictus and its actually the sword that was entrusted to the most trusted knight of the kingdom of Rosaria in FF16 where Clive comes from. The red part of the sword is that color because of the red color of a star called Metia next to the moon in the game thats seen as a Guardian to the moon in the game.

considering it's Final Fantasy, they really haven't went too far with the design. Remember some swords we have in the series: Buster Sword, Gun Blade, Brotherhood(now imagine forging water)Engine Blade. I dare to say this one is quite sober considering it's Final Fantasy.

In particular I appreciated your discussion of the time you took to weather the sword, as it certainly does bring it to life as a “lived” artifact instead of something artificial and only made for a single spot. You can tell the love and detail that went into its construction and this is what keeps bringing us back! Keep is up lads ;-)

Congrats Tod! I admit this sword looks cool (I love the tricks used to get the intended shape even though there was no practical considerations put into the design), but honestly... Could game developers and film makers consult experts *before* designing the things? So that we'd get fancy, overly expensive, pointlessly decorated but *still functional and practical* weapons and armour?

Wow - what an amazing sword, and how amazing that it works like a real sword, not a fantasy one, even down to having the correct balance point! 'Twas probably too heavy for Matt to check out the distal taper. And to have your outstanding work displayed at the Royal Armouries in the Tower of London - couldn't happen to a nicer bloke and craftsman! 'Tis certain that would never have happened if you'd just made a plastic sword and sprayed it silver! I'm chuffed for you!

Great work with the sword Tod! I like it a lot. That is one of if not the best fantasy sword/weapon made I have seen. The design is even one of the most sensible fantasy weapons I have ever seen. Yes, you need to be super strong and super fast to be able to use it well, but it still makes very total sense when put into a fantasy setting. Most fantasy weapons don't make any sense at all for practical use, but this sword makes total sense. Big kudos to both the Final Fantasy XVI team and to you. This is one of the very few fantasy swords I would like to buy if I had the money. Both because it is great looking fantasy sword and because I have been a big FF fan for very many years. And it is really amazing that your sword is on display in the Tower of London. Congrats with the success and you clearly deserve it a lot.

As a Final Fantasy fanboy I have to first say "Bravo Zulu". Job, incredibly well done. Second, in the video you said "If they have a material as strong as Steel but as light as Aluminium it would be perfect". The answer is the common (Fantasy) metal known as "Mithril" (spelling varies slightly but that's the most common I've seen) also known as "Moon Silver" in some places. Generally in Fantasy settings this stuff is considered pretty high up there in terms of a crafting material and anything better is typically reserved for Legendary tier equipment. Thus if (In Universe of course) the blade was made put of Mithril I would say that it would likely weigh only 10-12 pounds as since you're going after really tough monsters you would want the blade to at least have a solid core.

Make the blade thinner, the crossguard less chunky, and I think you can easily shave off 4 kg. It'd still be quite heavy though, but at least it would be in the realm of big two-handed swords.

😄 Nice, I was hoping to see Matt try some montante forms with it but figured he'd throw out his back As for telescopic weapons some friends of mine got hold of 2 they wanted to spar with recently 😋 The 1st one was a bo staff but I managed to bend it in a few strokes, clearly not great for bludgeoning weapons but the 2nd one really worked and I got a bit obsessed with it you'd love it - a telescoping spear. It's about a 12 inch hewing spearhead on a handle that extends to 2 lengths, 3 feet for single handed and 6 feet for 1 or 2 handed, it has a lot in common with an all steel hollow haft it's just a shame it would've got too thin for use at 8+ feet. Genius eitherway 🙂

6.55 almost Matt, almost :D There is a legitimate barbell exercise called the Land Mine Press and is meant to target and isolate one side of the pectorals that looks very much like this. You basically get a barbell, stick one (weight plate free) end up against the corner of the wall, make sure the other end is loaded with a weight plate and start pressing away before switching sides. Now there's an idea, medieval themed gym equipment? Anyone? Anyone? What do you all mean, "Nay"?

It looks to me like it's a pretty standard zweihänder with a sheet of metal pulled over it and secured around the crossguard. Knowing it's Final Fantasy, perhaps a sheet of mithril or something which is supposed to help with magic casting. If we're making parallels to other fantasy settings, mithril is also generally really light yet durable so it does make some sense. A neat fantasy design all in all.

Interesting, hollow section for larger weapons. I like that idea. Designing weapons for an idea of mine and the most important factors are surface area, reach and material density. Will definately incorporate hollow sections for some of said weapons in order to increase surface area in contact with its target without weighing a metric tonne.
