Weird Tank Prototypes
Ойындар
Who doesn't love looking at weird, totally nonfunctional vehicle designs? I'm known for doing this with fictional tanks, but for this video I figured I'd take a look at actual tank prototypes / designs that are pretty strange. In this video I'll take a look at the Hen and Chick, Object 490, ELKE, and TV-8.

As we are at it, there existed a prototype version of the Wiesel 1 with a " 30 mm caseless ammunition recoilless revolver cannon". The projectiles muzzle energy was presumably higher than that of the A10 Thunderbolt 2 gatling gun. I want this vehicle in warthunder so badly :D.

I like that concept of the modular tank
the first one (hen and chick) got some sense behind him: having standard little units that could be added together to form a bigger unit if needed, but dismanteled once again into multiple small ones when need to transport all of it. i personally find the concept/basic idea quite clever and pragmatical

What would a tank designed to operate on the moon be like, given that there's no air for internal combustion or cooling, very low gravity, and a weak, cratered regolith surface that provides concealment more than cover? What sort of ammunition and weapons would be used on the moon?

Realistically the idea of a moon tank is kinda infeasible. Tanks are extremely heavy and moving stuff to space is very expensive. If you could move mass cheaply and easily you could probably have much more effective ways of waging “space war”.

Funnily enough, Obj 490 got Evgeny fired from KMDB (it's more complicated than that TBF). The video author says it had to do with cost but that's not true, it was mostly because the tank was seen as inferior in gun depression and a sort of "ultimate T-80" (i.e. biggest gun in smallest/shortest package) by the Armor Directorate [the Soviet equivalent of the American Tank and Automotive Command]. The Soviet Army at this point (~1980) was no longer interested in reducing crew sizes (they had just finished a human factors study that showed that T-64 was much harder to maintain with three crewmen than T-62 was) or the size of the tank: they were willing to accept a bigger tank if it meant it would be easier to maintain with conscript crews. 490 had two crewmen and the division of labor in combat was unknown (according to the Armor Directorate, it would have been unsatisfactory or something) while maintenance would have been even harder. His colleagues tank, Obj 490A, was much more conventional in layout, had a "conventional" three-man crew, and had actually usable gun depression. 490A looked like a cross between the US Army's Stryker MGS and the T-80, eventually became Boxer, which became the T-95, which became the Ukrainian main battle tank prototype Nona, which drove around some field in Ukraine in 2001-2002 and shot about 40 rounds of 152mm. Nona still lives at KMDB IIRC and a lot of the technology from that tank was used in BM-Oplot. Namely the ERA, engine vectronics, and optronics. Regardless, the human factors won, and that's why 490A got chosen over 490. So ultimately it came down to ergonomics and the ability of the crew to fight in combat, not cost. The Soviets would have thrown any amount of money at the tank at this point. The collapse didn't begin in earnest until around 1986 anyway. There's a book by one of the engineers involved in 490 called The Last Charge of the Soviet Tank Engineers (or similar) that talks about it. In it, Evgeny Morozov comes off as a dick and actively tries to sabotage the 490A by promoting his 490 internally, against the wishes of both the Armor Directorate and his actual boss, and eventually gets fired for it. The engineer who wrote the book lives in Kharkiv now and last I heard he's still salty as hell that Putin hasn't liberated him from the Ukrainian Maiden Nazis or something, but he'd be in his late 80's or something now so he might be dead.
@matthiuskoenig3378

@@SecuR0M"no longer interested in reducing crew sizes" but the soviets had a separate maintenance platoon in every battalion, a separate maintenance company in every regiment and a separate maintenance battalion in every division, which performed routine and front line vehicle maintenance, the size of the vehicle's crew shouldn't and didn't matter to the soviets for vehicle maintenance. source: Soviet Army Operations, United States. Army Intelligence and Threat Analysis Center, The Center, 1983. which itself sited the 1976 soviet army operations manual unless this changed (which i have not seen so far, but i am no expert) it seems unlikely they would consider it an issue. then again internal space being smaller would hamper separate maintenance crews aswell. also the Object 477A1 'Nota' was a joint Ukrainian-Russian Fed project not just a Ukrainian one. which i think is what you mean by 'Nona' (which was a soviet airborne vehicle) and the T-95 (object 195) is an unrelated project [in terms of design] designed by Uralvagonzavod (Designers of T-72 and T-62) not Kharkov (Designers of T-64, and object 490A and object 477)

Great video, there were tanks i've never seen before.
FORD: "witness the American Car of the Future, the nuclear-powered NUCLEON!" CHRYSLER: *cracks knuckles* "siddown boy"
I never knew about the “Hen and Chick” concept. Very neat!
Have you considered talking about the Lowe? It’s a very interesting German design, in both its look and its story. The fact it went through so many redesigns (VK.70-01, VK.72-01k, etc), and evidently got far enough in its design process that it was given the Panzer VII designation seems like a cool story to tell.
Another issue that the 490B (that specific model you showed in the vid as there were other designs of the 490 that looked vastly different and more akin to traditional tank design) was outside of hulldown, the tanks gun had very very poor elevation that would make it difficult to shokt a target down range and was unable fo shoot at targets behind it
So hen and chick was probably the inspiration for the Halo Scorpion tank, cool.
Never so much as heard mention of the Hen and Chick, and honestly it's hard to say if it's weirder than the TV-8 or not.
Beside "hen and chick" tank, i knew about the other three ^^, nice video btw
Lindybeige just did a video on weird tank designs (although not these exact same ones) and I'm liking this inundation of prototypes from my preferred channels of late.
Definitely didn’t know about the elke . The rest of them I did. Thanks
Very good video, thank you! :))))
i got to say you did great at making a original strange tanks video, you did the thing considered evil by most tank KZreadrs, you only talked about American and soviet coldwar tanks. the rule with tank KZreadrs seem to be make the same video as everyone else just swap the footage around and maybe add a different song and the main rule is to only post about german tanks and dear god they cannot absolutely not bring up the successful tanks like panzer 1-4 and the stugs
Yes please would love this idea
Excellent video. Would you consider making one about specialised tanks such as AA tanks (ostwind, centaur), anti-infantry (KV-8, Sherman crocodile) and bunker-busters (KV-2, Churchill AVRE)? Do you think they are useful or just too situational? Would or have they a modern application and potential future development?
My favorite of the ones mentioned in the video is probably the elke. I don't know why but the few vehicles that do elevate their guns and weaponry above the hull have always interested me. Also I'm a sucker for the sheridan in general, which makes it seem even cooler to me that they would propose to use the sheridans hull.
do a part 2 of this i would like to see what else weird prototypes were proposed
the game play is very impressive - those shots were on the money!

Nice vid. Very good. Did you ever hear about the Tank 'Aureole' i Played the Tank in the PS1 game 'Panzer Front'
How about a video on the most influential tanks? Take the Carden Loyd tankette whos design lead to many tanks being developed based off it all around the world; Universal Carrier, Vickers Light Tanks, L3/33 & 35, Te-Ke 94 and 97, Škoda MU-4, TKS, T-27, Renault UE, and Panzer 1.
The object 490 you show in the video is the 490B 'Belka' (squirel) in english There are several variants of the object 490, and even some 'sub variants'. The object 490(b) in the video, is the 3th variant of the 490B. The 490B is probably the most heavily armored tank ever designed, with protection levels being about 1200-2500mm depending on the ammunition.
Oh, man. It'd be cool to see a fictional setting try to make some of these make sense in the context of their worlds. They are certainly distinctive designs. =P
Obj 490 is just stridsvagn-103 with extra steps
The Hen & Chick looks more like a Sci-fi Tank than most of the fictional vehicles you've reviewed

Maybe you could do a video about the promissing and successfully operating tanks, that didn't go into mass production for some reasons? For example Object 292 - a T-80 hull with modernized loading mechanism and modified turret to house a 152 smooth-bore gun and 16 round carousel magazine.
The only one in the list that I’ve never heard of was the “Hen and Chick” tank

What I really love about the oddball late 80s Soviet projects is that they they all actually performed so well that you can see their DNA in all sorts of projects currently looked at as the most advanced in the world. Examples being the T-14 tracing lineage back to the Object 490 and the F-22 and F-35 borrowing a lot from the Yak-41.

With Command & Conquer and Red Alert: Remastered out it would be nice to see a video analyzing the tanks present in those two games.

There's that prototype of an anti-air vehicle made by Russia that I kept forgetting the name of much to my dismay. It's basically a tank with its main gun removed and with heavy machine guns placed on the side of the turrets.
You should cover the Rhino tank from GTA. Since the appearance of the tank varies depending on the game, you should cover it in multiple videos.
Katoki definitely used obj 490 as basis to design the Hildolfr
This tanks are like the typical "futurist" tank game of the play store
You should cover the tanks from Supreme Commander, they're absolutely gigantic, and each faction has a unique style. UEF: The generic blocky Sci-fi human analogues, with bulky and durable tanks Cybran: Very angular tanks, utilising laser weaponry and has an amphibious tank that travels along the bottom of the ocean and fires torpedoes. Aeon: Basically Covenant vehicles, but some have some interesting characteristics, with the T2 heavy tank 'obsidian' being essentially a direct-fire wraith on tracks.
