WEIRD Huge CIRCLES in the Woods of Bucks County!

I've put quite a bit of hours into researching this. I found one piece of information, but not sure if it's credible.

My son is a big history buff knows exactly what these are. He bikes on the road (Ely Rd.) from time to time. He explained to me there was a large oil tank farm built on the hillside there in the mid 1900s I think by Standard Oil Co. of Pennsylvania. The circles you see are earthen berms created to contain a fire should one ignite on one of the tanks. The tanks were supplied by a pipeline that ran between western Pennsylvania (Oil City/Titusville area) and Bayway, New Jersey. My son said there was a bad flood in 1936 that partially exposed the pipeline along the Pennsy side of the river, then a lightening strike in 1938 punctured that pipe line starting the leak. The pipe line and oil tank farm was abandoned in the early 1940s and tanks were gone by 1945. The PA DEP and EPA continue to monitor testing wells near the river where contaminated groundwater still resides from the oil leak. Sometimes you can still smell oil walking along the canal there.

They were indeed. Just, the time era was wrong but everything else seems to align. Samantha's son and another contributor sent quite a bit of information. So interesting! The area is still contaminated too. And, this is in Bucks County where they filmed the movie Signs. 😂

I could definitely believe the oil storage tank theory. There were two Navy bases (Jacksonville and Willow Grove) close by.

I discovered these on google earth about 2 months ago. I used to drive for A gas tanker company, I used to load / unload my truck at above ground tanks like the ones I think where here. The outter rings are containment walls (berms) the small inner rings are probably remnants of the tanks. since you and I can't find info I think they maybe as old as WW1. They could have piped lined to and from the Delaware then on flat bottom barges to the Phila. Naval Yard. with the number of these tanks I think they would hold gas, diesel, motor oil and aviation fuel. just A guess.

It looks like you and the other contributor have cracked this mystery. At first I thought the outer circles might be containment structures too, but then I wondered if the site had been used for explosives testing during, say, WWII.

Oil tanks almost make sense, they would leave large depressions.

    Where abouts in Solebury?

To me these structures look more like craters than storage tanks. During WWII tanks for storing aviation fuel were constructed next to railway lines in rural parts of this state. I believe the remains of them are still there.

you could pipeline from A train yard to these tanks as well

The air force here had a unit whose job it was to guard the tanks, maintain the pumps, and fill tanker cars if necessary. The tanks were dismantled after the war but their concrete foundations are still visible on Google Earth.

Did you find anything on historic Arials?

  • @RusticVentures

Yes, but only the berms as historic aerials didn't go back as far as I needed it to, these pre-date WWII. I pinned Samantha's comment as she and her son are correct :-) And since I posted this in the historical group, I seen quite a few comments indicating they still smell oil in the area sometimes...and "oh! that's why I smelled oil". So, the area is still contaminated from the fires there and the huge oil field fire in 1940.

Seen these circles on maps too. Been thinking a lot what that may be. Thanks for investigation) Did you find them using lidar maps?

Thank you for the work you do with the videos. Maybe reaching out to Solebury’s fire house would help? Or knocking on doors for people who live there…. even ask if they were told about their drinking water. You can also cross post this video on a Solebury fakebook page if there is one.
