Weird and Unusual Railroad Crossings ft. A Federal Signal Mechanical Bell!
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Some of the unsual looking crossings Ive shot. Not all are completely odd but just odd for the area. Dont remember all the dates so just gonna say everything shot between August 2020 and February 2021. Anyway here it is:
Oakley st, Hammond, IN
NS 9609 & 1845.
Crossing is odd cuz of the light set up on the gate and the 2 signals on both sides of the crossing with lights but no crossbuck....
Main st, Morton, IL
NS D49
NS 3317 & 3521
Crossing is all Safetran and odd cuz of the extra sets of lights on each signal... only one like this around here that i know of..
Market st, Tiffin, OH (both sides)
EB intermodal & WB junk train
CSXT 3311 & 3230
CSXT 574 & 29
Crossing is at least Safetran lights and a GS Type 1 e bell. Its odd cuz of the ramdom cantilever with only 4 lights on top and nothing else and the weird light placement on the the signal next to it. This crossing was also in the middle of being replaced so glad i shot it!
OH 701, Blanchard, OH
SB Autorack.. also have another video this train on here.
Not sure on the crossing NEG E bell and odd cuz the signals are on the wrong sides of the road.
Main st, Convoy, OH
LIFW
Also have another video of the same train on here.
Forgot all crossing details but this one had a rare Federal Signal Mechanical bell! Just look at the signal close to me... that right there says it all why its odd.
Union st, Walbridge, OH
No train just shot both sides real quick of this super strange crossing.. Definitely the strangest one in the video.
Pearl st, Findlay, OH
SB junk train
KCS 4827 & UP 4698
Crossing was all Safetran w/ a Saftetran hybrid bell. Crossing was odd cuz of the high masts and ive never seen one with the crossbucks that high as well.
3rd st, Kentland, IN
TPW 3442 & 3440
Crossing was a bell only with a Safetran mechanical bell... wanted to include a bell only in this video.

I like how the crossing at 9:43 has older cross bucks
The crossing at 9:31, in southwestern Ontario, we have a crossing something like that because of where the entranceway is to the feed mill.
I always love seeing rusty, weird or broken signals working like this. Nice.

I've seen that done when a signal is non operational. I would imagine it's to avoid giving anyone a false sense of safety if they were to see non flashing lights and think there wasn't a train approaching.
@HMFan2010
Жыл бұрын
@@ctg6734 Interesting. I never would have thought of that as being one of the possible reasons. After reviewing the video, it does appear that the small apertures on the sides of the signals are NOT lighting up indicating that the lamps are not operating. Plus, I see the counterweighted yoke for the gate is not moving (and as far as I can tell does not have an arm attached to it). Thanks for the insight!

The crossbuck lettering at 9:09 indicates that Conrail used to own that line before CSX took over. Conrail was fond of that "Harmon" font for their crossings. There are some former Conrail crossings in Taunton MA that still have crossbucks like that (CSX and Mass Coastal now operate through them.)

I didn't notice the crossbucks were on the left side at Blanchard, Ohio because I've seen quite a lot of Australian railroad crossing videos so both versions are somewhat normal to me A crossing with a bell but no light is quite unusual and I thought such arrangements weren't allowed in America

Know the heritage of the first one and am going to guess the second one is also former Nickle Plate as they always seemed to come up with some odd home brew signal setups. What really surprised me was the gateless CSX crossing considering that the big guys are so liability averse I've seen full modern protection on gravel roads just to CYA

I live within 2 hours of all the Ohio locations and I live closest to the Walbridge one, about 20 minutes away. I've gone over it many times and have been stuck behind a train at it as well. I don't know why but up here in Northwest Ohio we have a lot of weird railroad crossings.

They are repurposed 50' flat's. They woulda gone the way of the torch, but as you can see at the time stamp, they lived past there retirement time. As a side affect of that, they cant interchange out with other roads. New(er) 50 flat's exist, but once those bunks get put on, they aint coming off. Interesting video! Also like that you show how much time from signal activation to train arrival. Thank you. 3:14 background noise is louder than the locomotive horn. Laughable. If installing higher mee-mool lights *(o)T(o)* , the morons should have placed the rear-facing *(o)T(o)* withe higher lamps. 9:13 Why are the mee-mool lights on the opposite sides of the road? If someone is hit, that could be a legal issue.

The last crossing at the end is kinda pointless for drivers. No lights or barriers, but a bell? How are they gonna hear that if they're driving with their windows up?
@bubbabiscuitcub
3 жыл бұрын
You’re supposed to be paying attention when you’re driving. If you can’t see a HUGE MACHINE with BLINDING BRIGHT LIGHTS and hear its BLARING LOUD HORN on your own, 1. WHY ARE YOU DRIVING??? 2. What good are bells and lights going to do?
@davidnissim589
3 жыл бұрын
@@bubbabiscuitcub The lights alert drivers from a distance, whereas the bells also provide that extra warning for people walking or biking. I know that this crossing was pretty open, but there are a lot of crossings with a blind spot (say, a line of trees or a tall fence) where you can’t see the train until the last second, so a crossing with JUST a bell would be bad because drivers would drive in front of a train if they couldn’t hear the crossing bell or see the train until the very last second.
