We all know how dangerous it is to tow a trailer that is overloaded or is unbalanced. It is especially dangerous if your tongue is loaded too light.
Your trailer can have a catastrophic sway incident.
Your tongue must be between 10 and 15 % of your total trailer weight.
if your trailer weighs 1000 pounds, your toungue must weigh between 100 and 150 pounds.

Just measuring the tongue weight on a bathroom scale using a footer, I was at 293 pounds in my 2022 tab. I wonder how much I need to add/subtract since I was measuring the weight a little behind the coupler? Is there a ratio I can use to get a more accurate number?

The distance difference betreen the coupler and the tongue jack is very small, so the inaccuracy will be very small also. But if you want to be exact it can be done. 1. Measure the distance between the center of your wheel to the place where you measured the weight. Call this distance "A". 2. Measure the distance between the center of your wheel and the center of your coupler (Where the ball fits). Call this distance "B". 3. Divide A by B. This is your correction factor. 4. Multiply this correction factor by the weight you measured. Example: Lets say you measure A=95 inches Lets say you measure B= 99 inches Then 95/99= 0.96 ( this is the correction factor) Then 293 x 0.96 = 281 pounds, the weight at the center of your coupler.
