    No one ever wants to lose birds... but it is inevitable, part of the sport! My 1st year I lost a bunch, likely 50% indeed. 2nd year likely 40%, this year, sadly, and still in progress, but looking like much worse than 50%... Good video buddy!!

    Tom I've been in pigeons only 2 years but what you are doing is the coolest thing I've seen. YBs last year started with 42 and ended the season with 13. I flew all the birds on all the races. I lost a hand full earlier this week when a flock of low fly geese went right over the loft and a third of the team was out all night.

    Thanks! Having a lot of fun. Hopefully I can keep them all progressing and healthy. That is tough with the geese, it seems just about anything can spook them sometimes. All the best!

    Great footage as usual! They're all looking good. Some of them are really cutting the air and dive bombing when they are let loose. They are feeling their oats for sure. Sad that the white bird didn't make it back. Maybe there's still hope..

    The first 2 years racing I let them out early and would lose 10 at a time to hawks scaring them up and them flying off. So I raised 100 and raced 30 the 1st year. Raised 100 and raced 20 the 2nd year. Last year I raised 80 and raced 45 or so. About 30 made it to the end of the season. Losses are going to happen but with a small team it hurts more. Nice update as always.

    That seems rather high for losses. I havent raced for years and the weather has changed a lot plus we didnt fly over the desert. Id be curious to see what Dennis says at Hawkbait, hes been flying a long time with decent birds.

    Your Landing board is to small for the birds to come straight onto they will need several passes to slow down on there approach causing Lost time make it full length of loft and double the depth and paint it a bright colour yellow and black diagonal stripes so can be seen at distance

    The way they are flying and how they look under your training. You wouldn't lose much at all. Just watch for wild cats instead and whenever you leave, I rather you get them back inside the loft and close the trap. They are looking sharp, so hawk would be no problem at all. When a wild cat grab a pigeon, you will not see any mess. Just a heads up to look out for. It is a possibility.

    hi Tom, I'm new to the sports your video really help a lot on settling them . I just got few question/advise how long do you keep your birds on the loft before you let them fly out? how do you do your feeding? I been training them to go to the trapdoor so far its been good, what would be my next step? I want to let them flyout but I'm scared they might not come back any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • @littleloftonthehill

    Depending on how you approach it, I would keep them locked up about one week. The past two pairs of new birds were flying from the crate to the loft in six days. I start them through the tunnel the day they arrived. Do it once a day before I feed them. You want them to be hungry each time you work them through the trap. kzread.info/dash/bejne/g2d_j8infMW7m5M.html

    Do you whistle constantly, when you're trapping, when you're feeding or none stop?

  • @littleloftonthehill

    @littleloftonthehill

    I have whistling issues… I probably do it too much. What I want it to mean to the birds is “trap in and eat”. If they are out flying and I want them trap in, I whistle and hope they will trap in and eat. On race day when a bird comes home he is used to the whistle and hopefully will trap and eat.
