    It makes sense, understanding ADHD, you would naturally assume that at least some that do experiment with drugs are, on some level, self medicating themselves or chasing stimulation.

    The findings of the first 2 studies closely mirror my internal experience. The harder I try to force myself to concentrate, the louder the static becomes from the part of my brain that wants to wander away. It's like having dimmer switches with crossed wires so that when I increase the brightness in the kitchen, the lights in the living room brighten as well. Although in this metaphor, the living room lights prevent me from living my life. 😅

    Regarding aerobic exercise and inhibitory control, I give it a yes and a no. I'm much less prone to having a bad reaction to something, but I'm more prone to being less inhibited over proper boundary issues, which surprises people, especially me. It still doesn't feel right but I know it is. I mean, I don't act like an a-hole about it but it seems a bit aggressive to me still. The bottom line is that hard-breathing exercises are great for me. Highly recommended. Three thumbs up!

    Considering ADHD is neurological (as reconfirmed by the first studies you mentioned), why is the percent of adults with ADHD lower than the percent of children? I.e. how come it seems like some people grow out of ADHD based on percent of population with the condition between childhood and adulthood?

    So, I 'bing'd this for you with my response (so it could fact check me) and this is what I got: ADHD, or Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, is a condition that affects both children and adults. Let’s break down the key points from your statement: “One does not ‘grow out of ADHD’”: This is accurate. ADHD is a lifelong condition, and individuals do not naturally outgrow it. “Symptoms may lessen due to various mitigation strategies”: Indeed, certain coping mechanisms, lifestyle adjustments, and treatments can help manage symptoms. However, this doesn’t mean the disorder disappears. “Less likely to be diagnosed in Adulthood”: Adult ADHD often goes undiagnosed because its symptoms can be subtle and overlap with other conditions. Diagnosis becomes more challenging as people age. “Not reported (or not accurately reported)”: Some adults may not recognize their symptoms as ADHD or may not seek professional help. “Take a different form as you age”: True. While hyperactivity may decrease, other symptoms like inattention and impulsivity persist. “Misdiagnosis”: Sometimes, ADHD symptoms are mistaken for other conditions, leading to misdiagnosis. “ADHD symptoms can be an attribute of something else entirely”: Co-occurring conditions or similar behavioral patterns can complicate diagnosis. “Percent of adults with ADHD is lower than children”: This discrepancy occurs due to various factors, including underdiagnosis and the evolving nature of symptoms. Brains develop - mainly during a few key time periods. Some people grow out of symptoms. Stimulants also seem to help in frontal lobe development. Plenty of reasons for there to be less adults with ADHD. But also some reasons to develop ADHD when older, mainly if your brain takes a hit in some way.

  • @russellbarkleyphd2023

    @russellbarkleyphd2023

    2 ай бұрын

    One reason is genetics. Certain genes for frontal lobe maturation turn on during ad,or scents and help some people go improve neurologically compared to others with different gene variants. Another is that the DSM symptoms a used for diagnosis are based on children and easier to outgrow with time even if the person has not really grown out of the disorder. They can outgrow the DSM. If we use executive functioning symptoms as the index for ADHD, then the percent of recovery or normalization is much smaller as there is far less if any decline in EF deficits relative to the greater decline in DSM symptoms. It’s a false recovery, in other words. Be well.

(Note: I am NOT saying there is a correlation with my colors and any brain MRIs.) When I was taking Adderall, if I closed my eyes tight, I saw a kaleidoscope of bright colors. Now, I am on ritalin time release, and I see NO colors. I conclude Adderall was better when I was still working. I am retired now.

    You are an advocate of people with ADHD taking stimulant drugs. Helen Flanagan, a 33 year old actress who was on Coronation Street had a psychotic episode through stimulant medication. She was diagnosed with ADHD. Have you anything to say about that or could you do an episode on the side effects of stimulant drugs and a warning against students snorting Adderall or abusing it to pass exams? And what if the ADHD diagnosis is wrong? What's your advice then?

  • @russellbarkleyphd2023

    @russellbarkleyphd2023

    There is evidence that ADHD alone significantly elevates the risk for a psychotic episode independent of stimulant exposure, as I discuss in my earlier weekly research review a few weeks ago. But about 1-2% of adults with ADHD taking oral stimulants may develop a stimulant induced psychosis. So while it can occur, it is a rarity and research needs to determine if the rate is elevated above the base rate for psychosis in ADHD. Be well.

    Good answer. It is often said though Russ, that people with ADHD are likely to be killed before the age of 45 due to accidents. You've said it due to the impulsivity and distractibility. Clearly though you have to admit there are exceptions to the rule. Ned Hallowell is 74 and he has ADHD. John Ratey is 76 and he has it. According to Hallowell and Ratey Einstein had it, George Bernard Shaw who died at 94, Henry Ford at 83. Richard Branson is 74 in July and he has it. I think it depends on the severity of the ADHD and the nature of the person.

    The authors of the larger fMRI mega-analysis are arguing that most prior ADHD brain imaging studies are severely underpowered and are not advancing the field. They found only small effect sizes for hyperconnectivity of the frontal-striatal circuitry, supporting more recent evidence indicating the pathophysiology of ADHD is complex. Furthermore, they explained that their mega-analysis was significantly biased by large samples of people with household incomes >$200,000. Obviously, this doesn't invalidate your proposed model, but perhaps your model (and most conventional models of ADHD) is too narrow to describe the broader, heterogenous population of people with ADHD. Personally, I suspect that greater advancements in social cognitive neuroscience are needed to better appreciate the degree to which the typical person outsources their executive functions to their environment. After all, the core symptoms of ADHD are socially relativistic and refer to a range of behavioral extremes reflecting either deficient (inattention) or excessive (impulsive-hyperactive) engagement with one's social environment.

    Dear Russel, I want you to answer me. I've found that most people with ADHD are deficient on alot of nutrients and are also prone to sleep disorders like sleep apnea or insomnia. According to me ADHD is not a real disorder it's just a different name for the essential nutrient deficiencies and sleep disorders in kids and adults,this impairs their cognitive health due to this they're unable to function in a normal way, I belive if one takes the right supplements and cures his/er sleep apnea or other sleep disorders then surely he/she will be out of this so called ADHD disorder

So much so that even in normal people being defficent in even one of them can have a dramatic negative impact on them.

And I don't know but my mind says sleep and supplement these are things one needs. Because if you see sleep apnea shows the same symptoms like ADHD, potassium deficiency shows the same symptoms even other vitamins too. Why is this like this. I belive something is really black behind these researches about ADHD that they ignore and say limited research is available, but why have you ever thought about it. Yes, the deficiencies are there, but attempts at delineating their causal effects have come up empty-handed. Here is a review from 2016 going into depth on the effects of various deficiencies that have been noted thus far and their implication on ADHD - www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4928738/, according to which there is nowhere near enough evidence linking nutrient deficiencies to the presence of ADHD, but there are notable, although limited, indications of these deficiencies possibly contributing to symptom severity, but NOT symptom presence. Increased likelihood of ADHD in cases of malnourishment and micronutrient deficiency have been noted, but to my knowledge the studies I have seen are limited in their broad applicability - they were retrospective in nature, meaning they didn't assess causal patterns of ADHD arising over time and focused mainly on analyzing patterns in smaller populations after an ADHD diagnosis has been established. This skips over immensely important factors that have been shown to be the predominant causal predictors of ADHD - genetics! The control-matching is of limited power to the question at hand if it doesn't account for already known causal factors. Your question is valid, and it has been asked many times in research studies. However, the link between deficiencies was demonstrated to NOT be causal in nature. Micronutrient supplementation hasn't shown to be widely applicable in treating ADHD. To quote an excellent opinion piece on the topic: "Given that the biological and environmental mechanisms underlying ADHD are multifactorial, heterogeneous, and complex, it is naïve to expect a simple one-fits-all solution in regard to micronutrients, diets, or any other therapy." (Lange, 2020)
