All I can think of is how accurate that is to the tabletop experience. Got told by a DM friend how her players spent 30mins digging _under_ a door because they couldn't figure out a puzzle. (The puzzle was four pedestals requiring things representing elements to be placed on them, such as a frather for wind, or a rock for earth. They had all these items in their possesion. This did not matter.)

I would also recommend not worrying about doing things "the boring way", the game is fucking massive and you find so many different situations and crazy and weird moments, some of these solutions just come to you naturally or you do them accidentally, it's part of the game.

It really carries the spirit of D&D that there is no one "right way" of doing things. This is honestly the best adaptation of D&D ever, only surpassed by the "theatre of the mind" in the tabletop itself.

I also find turning to weird solutions tend to happen either accidentally or out of an oncoming necessity like getting stuck on an encounter and deciding to use barrels/items or the environment more which really adds to how fucking awesome it feels to overcome a fight not just by doing it better but totally turning it on its head using in universe tools

The thing woolie wants in the game is already in it. The game provides you douzens of items that let you freely cast spells and abilities you would normally overlook that have powerful environmental effects. The amulet to speak with dead, the boots of featherfall, the staff of create water, etc etc. And there are other items that encourage you to use abilities. Like the ring that increases thrown item damage. Or the amulet that makes surfices you stand in effect enemies you hit with spells. A lot of my experimentation evolved out from items that reminded me certain interactions exist.

  • @Zangelin

Its genius really. They give you a free sample to use it and now that you have tried it you consider slotting it into your spell list when you eventually have to want to replace that item. except the featherfall boots I kept those on my hot bar to swap to all the time.

This kind of game sounds like the antithesis to pat and woolies thought patterns. Pat himself said he has no imagination, the concept is cringe to him. Woolie always plays mental gymnastics with himself to the point he’ll do actions antithetical to his intentions. He would be in a state of perpetual overthinking in a game he’s coming in knowing there’s multiple possibilities.

Mfw I reach a hub, talk to a NPC that stands out visually and think to myself "what the fuck, why is a totally normal ????? here?", go through their dialogue tree and get even more put on edge even though it's totally harmless dialogue, then inspect them and see that their race doesn't match up with their visual appearance AT ALL and know I was completely right to trust my instincts. Then way later I stumble onto an encounter with them and it turns out they're a boss and I have a small brain blast and remember that's how inspection works and use the exact same trick to figure out which is them and which is the hostage so I can damage dump into them and not waste any actions at all. What a good adaption of D&D, it even lets me metagame myself, lmao.

So the thing about Sanctuary is that it does work how you think, HOWEVER, with Sanctuary in particular you *can* still be harmed. There is a line in the tooltip that specifies that AoE damage and effects can still hurt you. There's a number of challenging fights that I was able to take advantage of this fact to end a fight quicker - using Arrows of Rolling Thunder to knock Sanctuary-buffed enemies into chasms, for example. So, use the tactic at your own risk, so long as the enemy doesn't have AoE spells you're golden.

Sound is also important for stealth. It's why if you kill somebody in stealth, sometimes guards will come running and then you get caught instantly. On the other hand, if you cast silence over the area first they will not. The best way to do crimes in BG3 is to cast darkness and then silence over the crime area. Some NPCs will react to this and exit the area while others will not but if you do it in turn based they don't even get the chance to do so anyway.

I obliterated a whole goblin camp by just getting really high up and shooting at them from up top and having an angry Githyanki lady push them down to their deaths when they got up to my level of elevation because goblins are ridiculously small and very pushable. Their massive ogre "guard" couldn't do anything because he can't climb for shit, so we just made a pin cushion out of him and swept the whole goblin camp of ~20 goblins with all of my party being ~ Lv3 without spending any of our potions or healing spells. There are few feelings in gaming more rewarding than stumbling into "I bet I can just kill the whole camp of goblins and commit genocide if I just pushed them off the mountainside while they're climbing to get me" while I'm stealthily backstabbing goblin kids by the campfire

Yeah never be afraid to ask what can be done. Theres lots of things you can do. You're learning it fine. and some things aren't exactly explained well. like Inspiration for example its when you pick a dialog choice and it fits a characters background, or "when you roleplay" as your character, you get 1 reroll. Like street urchin if you play with the kids doing scams in the grove you get a reroll from the street urchin character. or local hero background just doing stereotypical good save everyone choices will get rerolls. anyone can use that reroll BUT you only get 4 rerolls max so use them or your wasting them as sometimes you get multiple rerolls for the same dialog choice from different backgrounds. edit: also you mentioned "you reached the thresehold to cause cutscene" theres many of those where its actually you were seen past a certain point you can sneak further in and do stuff sometimes then trigger a cutscene by unsneaking/intentionally getting seen.

I don't want the game telling me what I can and can't do, I just want it to place options everywhere and if I find them, I find them, if I don't then I don't. Being aware of all the limitations breaks the wonder that you should have while playing an RPG. I think the realization that I could have handled an encounter entirely differently is the mark of a good game, and encouragement to do multiple playthroughs with different builds, not something to feel bad or dumb about. It's the same kind of logic behind why certain types of outfits on people can be more arousing than them just being stark naked, sometimes you need to leave something to the imagination. I know people who play fighting games would prefer to play as simple hit boxes on a grey flat plane with every piece of data visible at all times, but there is nothing more antithetical to the nature and joy of video games than that, in my opinion. I say this as someone who actually does like to peak under the hood of what a game, or an engine is doing.

There are some classes that don't have associated party members such as Sorceror, Bard and Monk. You can either get a druid companion or paladin companion based on whether you go for a good or evil kinda playthrough and choices you make so I guess they kinda count.

I feel like Pat was easy to dismiss the suggestion of having at least some vague tips, BG3, in fact, doesn't have even slightest tutorial outside of basic tooltips and "new player who doesn't play cRPGs too much" would, in fact, struggle, and it could be off-putting to some players. But, that is a design choice and to the suggestion of "added later", especially given that it is a design choice in both DOS1-2 as Larian's previous titles, it's not gonna happen, and I don't think they care to make game more ... let's say informative in that way, they kinda like player's stuggle in that regard, I think. In fact, I think (personally, no proof), that Swen, as game director, after watching some of his interviews and "post-production" on DOS2, constraints himself to not do the game that would require a player to have an actual notepad to write the clues, quests, etc physically, old-school style. It mirrors some of FromSoftware design choices, which are just old-school games design, that are "here is shield, here is a sword, go", no clues on alternative routes, environmental stuff, etc. If you figure out - cool, the game plays, if you don't - cool, the game still plays, it's up to you to make it easier or harder and the game doesn't really care how you do it, outside of difficulty modes, it just gives you tools to use however you want. and general rules are - reading the thing explains the thing (just as in MTG, reading the card - explains the card) - if it would in theory, logically, work, it probably will work

That game, especially the first one, only exists in the "I can't believe that worked" state until it's works too well.

Jank like that sanctuary + spirit guardians thing is why I somewhat like but also REALLY dislike the 5e system. That shit doesn't make *sense* in the gameworld, because if things work like that, *enemies should be doing that bullshit too.* Furthermore, a second-level (?) spell like sanctuary *shouldn't be that strong*. Idk just... I guess I'm not the same kind of player. I like ttrpg combat but with 5e it's so *easy* to break the system in half with jank interactions that it's almost impossible to have a combat that you can meaningfully interact with - either you can break it with jank, or the enemies have so much anti-jank tech that it gets broken the other way and you aren't allowed to have fun. It's just. A fundamentally poorly-designed system, and it's frustrating when incredibly talented creators use 5th edition just because it's the most popular even though it's kinda trash. Idk maybe I'm wrong and there's a back-end system that adds tons more enemies to fights if you've optimised to the point nothing can touch you. I hope there is.

Another save with the same character I just eldritch blasted the bridge in her room as she walked across it, instantly killing her. Game of the year.
