I started canoeing on the Weeki Wachee River over 30 years ago and switched to a kayak 20 years ago. Kayaks were rare and it was so peaceful on the River then. Now, it's frequently kayak gridlock. It's shocking and sad to see what the over promotion of tourism has done to this fragile resource in just a decade or two. I'm happy to see the District and other governmental agencies take significant protective actions for the health and future viability of the river. These are good tips and I'd encourage everyone to do their part to protect and preserve this for future generations. Our great, great grandchildren deserve this.

So glad there is an effort to clean up the WW Springs. I noticed it was getting trashy the last few years!! It was so beautiful and clear waters many years ago!!

Power boats make more wake than kayaks.

If you check out the rules from the state park you're not even allowed to swim in the river when you rent the kayaks or if you bring your own vessel. The only thing I agree with here is not being able to throw litter. I have enjoyed the Wiki watch you river since I was 16 and it is sad To see all of the rules keep you from enjoying the beautiful Spring water. Wikiwachi used to be a fun place to go.

Doing everything to keep people at home staring at some stupid electronic device .Why could they not hire a few people to monitor the river and keep trash out ? They almost cut the available river in half so why not use this half for 5 yrs and vice versa ? The control is real.

The waves from jumping causing bank erosion? lol. Wow. It’s not the natural ebb and flow of the river? Nature will take its course. Erosion is natural.

I suggest you read the survey. Walking in the river by too many people and erosion kills the submerged aquatic vegetation which keeps the water clean and is a home to fish and food for turtles and manatees. A sandy bottom river is not a natural look. Even if you do believe that this much erosion is natural, (which it is to an extent but human use causes more than nature and doesn't give the river a chance to recover naturally after a hurricane or other events), wouldn't you at least agree that trampling eel grass and ludwigia is bad for the eco system of the spring? Look at many smaller magnitude springs that have no capacity limit and the water quality is so bad, it's overtaken by algae and cloudy with no fish aside from mosquito fish. But what do I know? I went to school for hydrology, geology, and environmental science, and spend 5 days a week in the Florida Springs....

Wakes do the same thing- create eroding waves, which is one reason (besides manatees) that in fragile areas all around the country (and world) there are NO WAKE signs and enforcement. BTW This river doesn't ebb except in the lowest portion; much of the sand is also from the park at the headwaters. It has choked out a lot of grass even in the last few years.

Its all nonsense the trees I was swinging out of 40yrs ago are still alive and very healthy along the river pollution and trash are the real concerns .
