My favourite thing about this song winning is watching the previous year's winner present her the trophy at the end of the show. He had very publicly slagged off Netta and her song as not being 'real music' and encapsulating everything wrong with modern pop music. The look on his face when Netta won and he had to personally hand her the trophy. Chef's kiss.

You have to be a EBU (European Broadcasting Union) member to participate. Australia and Israel are, which is why they can compete despite not being European countries. Some countries opt out every now and then, usually for financial reasons. The countries that participate are split into two semifinals. The top ten from each semifinal move on to the final, which has 26 entries. Apart from the 20 countries that qualify through the semifinals there is the host country (typically last year’s winner) plus the ”big five”, ie Germany, France, Italy, Spain and the UK, that contribute the most money to the EBU and automatically qualify for the final.

  • @uztre6789

Australian broadcasters can't become full EBU members, they're only associate members. There's something called European Broadcasting Area, which is kinda like a square over a map of Europe, so includes surrounding parts as well. To become a full member, you have to be a broadcaster from a country that lies at least partially in that 'box'. It was ammended in the early 2000s, so that Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan also lie within it. SBS from Australia has a contract with the EBU for the song contest, that's why they can participate (same with Kazakhstan in Junior Eurovision).

There’s a KZread video as a guide to Eurovision, that will explain a lot, but essentially, apart form the ‘big 5’ who automatically qualify for the grand final, everyone else goes through one of the semi finals. The big 5 qualify as they pay for most of the annual show and as such have always qualified since semis came in.

HOW EUROVISION WORKS IN PRACTICE, ROUGHLY Please note, this is the _current_ format. Notable changes to the format have happened in 2023, 2021 (backing vocals), 2016 (current point reveal), 2000s (Big 5, semis), 1997 (televote)... I think the official max number of countries that can take part is 45, but for the last two years it's been about 37. Basically, each eligible country (if their broadcasting company is a member of the European Broadcasting Union aka EBU, not all broadcasters can be members, I think there's requirements about providing both news and entertainment - only exception so far is Australia, who's like an associated country and can take part thanks to a special contract with EBU, but they still gotta pay etc) decides individually if they want to take part/if they have the money to take part. Then each country/broadcaster chooses their performer and the song. Song cannot have been performed or released _anywhere_ before September preceding the Eurovision it's taking part in. So songs in 2024 Eurovision must come out in/after September 2023. Sometimes the broadcaster just chooses someone, most countries hold their own show to choose who goes. Sometimes a jury chooses, sometimes the public chooses, most times it's a combination of both. These take part generally January to March, although some countries choose earlier, and the latest is like super early April. Song is max 3 minutes long, max number of performers on stage is 6, music must nowadays be prerecorded, backing vocals were live until Covid, main vocalist must sing live, no live animals on stage. The minimum age of the performer is 16. Eurovision is held in the first full week of May, generally in the country that won the previous year (unless there's a good reason not to do so; Ukraine won in 2022 but for obvious reasons they couldn't host in 2023, so the runner up UK stepped in - also, Ireland won so many times in the 1990s that they asked someone else to host instead, UK stepped up back then too). So 2024 is in Malmö, Sweden. There's two semi-finals (Tuesday, Thursday) and the Grand Final (Saturday). Semis are like three hours, and the final is like four. 6 countries qualify automatically to the Grand Final; the host country (so in 2024, Sweden), and the 5 biggest financial contributors; UK, France, Spain, Germany, and Italy. The rest of the countries are split between the two semifinals, and ten countries from each, will make it to the final. Semis usually have 16-18 acts, Grand Final has 26 (25 if on of the biggest financial contributors won, like in 2022 after Italy won in 2021). Since 2023, the acts qualifying from the semis are determined by televote/public vote only. You cannot vote for your own country - unless you have a phone registered to a different country. In the Grand Final the winner is determined by a 50/50 split of a professional jury vote and a public televote. Juries have 5 people, music producers, artists, radio DJs etc - however there's been talk for years that juries need to be bigger to diversify so we'll see if they keep the 5 person juries. Especially as there has been corruption and point fixing scandals between the juries of different countries in the past. Jury awards points 1-8, 10 and 12 to their ten favourite acts based on a jury show, that was like the final rehearsal earlier that same day before the broadcast, and a spokesperson announces the points on live television (this results in so much drama, the betrayals when a country you have good relations with doesn't give you points is absolutely devastating on social media, so many memes) - this time is used to count up the televotes, which are then revealed from top to bottom in whatever order the jury votes has left the board in. The country that received least point from the jury get televote points first and so on. This keeps the excitement up really well.

Just a quick note to say that Ireland didn't ask anyone else to host during their run in the 90s, although they did try to avoid winning one year by selecting a bland song that had previously been rejected. It won anyway! The UK did step up to host in the 70s after Monaco won and after Luxembourg's second xuccessive win.

Yes yes yes, that was good. Yes, that was a fairly good sing, a bit predictable, but the catchiest of the year iirc, from the get-go, as soon as it was released we knew we were looking at a potential winner. Yes, it was a stonking performance, helped by the fact that all the build-up was about the first few seconds and Netta's 'live-recorded' vocals (her first few seconds of vocals were immediately sampled and played back on her rythm-box, 'live' on stage, that was the gimmick, because there's a rule about the main vocals not being pre-recorded) but when it came to the night Netta delivered much more than just a beatbox of technology, she really delivered, that revved-up 'boy-oy-oy-oy' reverberated around Europe that night it should have had a Richter Scale all to itself, it was glorious. And thirdly, Yes to your reaction, that was the most I've enjoyed that song since 20-wheneveritwas, it feels like eons ago, but honestly, your reaction made it feel fresh again, thank you, that WAS a reaction, and I'm glad you enjoyed it.

As a biiiig Eurovision fan, I want to commend you on all these reaction videos. It's so great to see you enjoying them and coming at them with an open heart and curiosity. Also, it super to see how much you get right when you guess at things, even with little background knowledge. Hope you'll watch the whole show in May this year! (Come watch with us and the gang in Seattle!) So, my list for Eurovision music videos: Iceland 2020 - Daðdi og Gagnamagnið - Think About Things kzread.info/dash/bejne/iHqOsNijXavMcrg.html (one of the best ever) Iceland 2019 - Hatari - Hatrid mun sigra kzread.info/dash/bejne/h3umtMqCmpesgto.html (what a difference a year makes) Ukraine 2021 - Go_A - Shum kzread.info/dash/bejne/h2thxtqzoJmwptY.html (you've seen the performance, but this is also worth watching) Moldova 2021 - Natalia Gordienko - Sugar kzread.info/dash/bejne/Y66q0NWvqKSZpNI.html (better than the live performance) Azerbaijan 2020 - Efendi - Cleopatra kzread.info/dash/bejne/e2SK3KR8prKXh84.html (talk about cultural appropriation!) Although "Who the Hell Is Edgar" (mentioned by others) is also good.

Most countries will have their own local competition to choose who will represent their country. Then they have 2 lots of semi finals where normally around 6 or so countries don't go through to the final. Then of course you get the final.

2:35 So the chicken noise is a cultural reference joke. If I remember it correctly in Israel chickens, or more specifically roosters commonly symbolise men? Some sort of thing like that. So them acting like chicken is directly meant to be adding more salt into the wound. Cause this is very like "girl power" song. And also why some of the male fans in the audience were wearing chicken head. Netta specifically is a rare looper artist, that I feel like are much more common in Europe than oversees and she creates a lot of electric music as well. She unfortunately couldn't perform her usual way - but they definitely adapted the effect well enough with the back up singers (looping machines and other audio editing is not allowed during the competition - they didn't allow any recorded or prerecorded lines until C19, and before like 2000s they also required live orchestra).

There is coming a Eurovision 2024. Not every country has a national selection first, but like as Finns (yeah, I am from Finland) do. The Final of our selection is in the 10th of February. ❤. We have only 7 artist. The other countries can have and has more. In Norway they have 4 semis before the selection as and so on. Some countries just have decided which one of there Artist will represent them in Eurovision. Those countries appier in Eurovision that pay the participation fee. For example Australia has participated to Eurovision couple of years now. 😂 Not really a country of Europe either 😅.

No, not every country performs every year. Some countries come and go, especially given financial constraints in poorer European countries. And even if a country can afford to select a song and send it, it's not necessarily a given they will have the resources to stage it well. So it's not always a fair and equitable proposition, which is unfortunate when a country has a really good song or a really good concept but can't pour a huge amount of money into the stage production.

Eurovision music videos! Here's a collection of some of the most creative ones that are kinda infamous in the fandom. (At least that I know of) 5. Sugar- Natalia Gordienko (Moldova 2021) 4. I Wrote a Song - May Muller (UK 2023) 3. My Sisters Crown - Vesna (Czechia 2023) 2. On Fire - The Roop (Lithuania 2020) 1. Think About Things - Daði og Gagnamagnið (You've reacted to the icland 2021 song, this is the 2020 song that went pretty viral. Also make sure you're reacting to the video on Dadi Freyr's channel and not the national final performance on the official eurovision channel)

@@lesliej.5612 First there’s no supporters, it’s not a soccer game, you either stands for humanity or you don’t. Second, so you’ll agree that literally a newborn palestinian is a terrorist? your logic is stupid and it’s nonsense. Third, promoting israeli songs while there’s a current genocide, ethnic cleansing, apartheid in Palestine for 75 years because of what Israel is doing yeah I think it’s wrong. And any good human being would agree. Saying that it has nothing to do with the war is wrong. If you were cultivated enough you'd know that Eurovision is a singing competition with geopolitical implications. Wether you like it or not.
