The Northern Lights are truly amazing! And not through a camera lens. The naked eye is the best way to see all those glorious colours dancing in the sky!!

When we lived in North Dakota we could see the northern lights from home with our naked eyes. Beautiful greens usually.

I'm in northern Manitoba, Canada and we can see amazing Northern Lights without a camera. We get beautiful blues, teal, pinks, purples, etc. And they dance across the sky. The further away from the city, the more vibrant the colors.

I have seen the Northern Lights without a camera and the colors were SPECTACULAR! It was up in Northern Ontario back in the late 80s on a chilly February night. The ones earlier this week were not anything near as beautiful. But still cool to see them ‘dancing’…those cloud like formations shimmer and move across the sky and do so in undulating fashion…think a fluid Bargello type pattern.

Hi Cindi and Brianna, I was raised and lived most of my life in Alaska, first in southeast AK, then north of Anchorage. I moved to Missouri several years ago. Yes, you most definitely can see the northern lights with your naked eye when they are active. I've even 'heard' them on occassion. They snap, crackle, and pop, which is an amazing thing to see, hear, and feel! I feel like the atmosphere is thinner and clearer the further north you go, and there is less light pollution, maybe that is why. I've never viewed them through a camera. Last Thursday they were beautiful here in Missouri, I also live on a farm away from cities. The first time I've seen them here. I do believe photos nowadays with filters etc. enhance them, but I have seen them that intense many times in Alaska. I love tuning in, connecting with you and your family and my bucket list includes coming to a retreat and seeing you all, Euphrata, and Soap Lake one day. My mother's family settled near there in the early 1800's (Klickitat, Yakima, Multnomah) and spread out from there. I was born in Vancouver and my parents worked for the forest service at Lewis River, before moving to Alaska in 1967 (Iwas 3). I feel a family affinity and nostalgia when I hear you talk about the area! ~ much love, jennifer

Can't wait for that Poinsettia panel! A minky back and that will be AMAZING for a cozy Christmas quilt! I have a friend that encourages me to come use her longarm. It took me two evenings to finish up my National Parks panel. I will DEFINITELY be doing the Poinsettia on the longarm also. Gorgeous!!!!

When we lived in North Dakota years ago , we would see the northern lights with naked eye sometimes there was color and sometimes no color just brights streaks in the sky . Sometimes they would come up a in short streaks sometimes long streaks They would dance around up and down. It was awesome !

I have seen the northern lights in Moses Lake back in the 70s with my naked eyes. They were spectacular, colorful and amazing. These of last week I believe were a color that our human eyes could not see with out a lens. It all depends on the specific lights.

Years ago, I was out on the water on Sebago Lake, Maine where there is little to no ambient light from civilization. I DID see the Northern Lights, and the colors were mostly pink and green, with a tinge of purple. I was amazed. They were beautiful, and I was so thankful to have had that experience. I was looking with my naked eyes (this was long before cell phones were around). And, we have fireflies up at the lake, too...lots of them!!

We saw the aurora in Northern Norway (above the arctic circle, in January) . They were astonishing with our eyes alone. Wildly arcing back and forth across the sky, green, blue, purple, even red in the fastest moving parts. Very, very impressive with the naked eye.

I saw the lights in Michigan through my cellphone camera. Also I Love the sound of the train in the background

Northern Lights-in Northern Minnesota we saw the lights all the time with the naked eye, especially during winter. I didn't realize how special they were until I moved away. They were stunning.❤

I live in Norway and see the northern light every winter. It is fantastic, never thought of using a camera. It is almost always light green - almost applegreeen. Sometime a little pinkish. Only those colors exist, because green whebn the electrines hit nitrogen, pinkish when it hits some oxygencombination - which are the two gases in the outer atmosphere. Winter because it has to be dark to see it .

I've never seen a firefly, don't know if we have them in Australia, don't think so, but I get excited when I'm on the way home on the ferry and see dolfins

In Maine we saw beautiful colors with our eyes. And camera enhanced it to purple or deep pink!!

We went to Alaska years ago, stayed at hotel - they asked if we wanted wake up call for northern lights - we said yes - 4am a call came - we went out in our jammies - sure enough swirly green and pale pinks bright whites - (just by our eyes). It was amazing.

You and me both Brianna. That is on my bucket list! I want to go to Alaska to see the Northern Lights. Also. On Little Bear they went to where the lights touch the Earth. Bears don't have cameras 🤣🤣

I'm in rural northeast Alberta, and we can see the northern lights dancing in the night sky with the naked eye. They are usually green but can occasionally be red as well. If the exposure is extended when taking photos (or using "night mode"), the colours look a lot brighter in the photos.

we called them lightning bugs. We would wait until dusk and go out with jars and a lid to try to catch them. We had so ,cut fun as kids doing these simple things.

You can absolutely see the northern lights with your naked eyeball! I saw them 40 years ago in northern Ontario Canada driving in the winter. Beautiful green shades danced across the sky. I have heard they show best on a very cold winter night. (40 years ago there were no fancy digital cameras to mess with what you're seeing)

Gary is from Iowa. The first time I visited his hometown almost 30 years ago, I saw my first fireflies and a spectacular, colorful show of Northern Lights. It was the highlight of our trip.

I went to Alaska for my honeymoon, end of July to early August. It was too light to see Northern lights. The most impressive display I observed was in the 1970s in Minneapolis. The display was very theater curtain-ish. The center was overhead and spread out in all directions. White near the top and purple and green ripples. It was amazing and lasted a long time. Western suburb of Minnetonka. The city lights didn't drown out the colors. I saw my first lightning bug when I was 5 on my first camping trip near Wisconsin Dells. We found out about synchronized fireflies in the Great Smokies. They flashed on and off together! You need to reserve your spot more than a year in advance to watch them. So sorry to hear about Lori. We will keep praying for Ben. Calvin and KPDutyQuiter.

My husband & I have seen the Northern Lights driving old Hwy 10 between Ellensburg & Cle Elum a few times before there were any iPhones. Yes, you can see them in color w/o a phone.

I live in Ottawa Ontario. I have seen the Northern Lights without the assistance of a camera. They were mostly green. Unfortunately I missed the show on the weekend because of cloud cover. Truly enjoy your channel. Lorraine

I’ve seen the northern lights 5 times, always here in Washington state. First time it looked like green curtains (1974 no phone or camera). Second time was in a car somewhere near Washtucna. It was white dancing columns. Did not look like clouds at all. (1976 no phone or camera) Third time was glowing red in the sky. We were in Toutle and thought it was Mt St Helens (1982, no phone or camera). Fourth time was driving down 520 into Redmond. I saw what looked like searchlights. Like the ones that advertised sales when we were kids. (Late 1990’s by then I had a cell phone, but it didn’t have a camera) The lights last weekend did look like clouds, but I have spectacular pictures with my phone. It was definitely more colorful with the camera.

Never seen the northern lights, totally missed it over the weekend :( - I purchased the grid kit of Minecraft - going to do it with my grandson in stages - stage 1, pick the characters (only doing 9). next, pick the colors from my stash (hoping I have enough for all, otherwise a shopping we will go :)

When I lived in Northern Michigan I saw the Northern lights with naked eye, mostly greens. I was not happy getting awakened with 2 small children and I was exhausted LOL, the lights are very pretty.

When we lived in North Dakota I saw them lots of times in colors. The Base wS remote and other near town. Maybe the lack of street lights made themshow better.

I can personally attest to seeing all the colors with my naked eyes. And, the lights can be very vibrant colors and come in waves and flashes.

I have seen the Aurora live with my naked eyes, but did not see it this last time in Moses Lake… And BTW tracing a picture and painting it is considered art just as much as drawing it and painting it…

When my husband went to Alaska in 2020 the lights were "turned off". That's what a native told us. He actually said they are only seen certain times of the year. Would like to know if that is true. Hope Traci gets a good report! Missed Maisey!!!

I saw the Northern Lights in the early 90’s without using a camera. I was here in WA state south of Moses Lake.

ROFL….ok, here’s what Google told me: *The further north you are, the better chance you'll have of seeing the aurora. You'll also need clear skies and minimal light pollution for the best view. If you're looking for the northern lights, point your eyes in the direction of the northern horizon. Using your phone camera can also help. *Even if you reach a park, a harbor or a river bank (given that all these places are not saturated with artificial lights) you might indeed be able to see something, but only if the Lights appear exactly where the sky is free of artificial lights, which is sometimes not the case. Another factor is the horizon line. *In person, they can range from a faint glow to great waves of bright light sweeping across the whole sky, never looking quite the same twice. Plus, depending on where you're standing and what angle you're looking at them from, they'll look different each time-it's truly magical! * Auroras appear to the naked eye as a very faint, white glow in the night sky to the magnetic northsouth. Many auroras are totally invisible to the naked eye or can only be seen by looking at them indirectly, i.e. out of the corner of your eye. It is extremely rare to see them in colour with the naked eye. *and here for your scientific explanation 😂 What color we experience depends on which gases are involved and where it happens. I saw the northern lights here in North Carolina using my phone. I made several pictures.

Just an ironic note, because at this time of year we don’t get dark at night in Fairbanks, we couldn’t see the northern lights following the largest solar flare in 20 years. But we do get the green, purples and pinks during the winter months.

I love lightning bugs! My grandparents had lightning bugs in their backyard under their peach tree. I remember catching them - by hand (because they move so slow)and putting them in a jar and taking them in the house and turning off all the lights. We’d always let them go after a bit. I saw the Northern lights when I was in Alaska and it WAS with the naked eye. I asked my friend who lived there why the sunset looked like that? And she said it wasn’t the sunset it was the Northern lights! It was purpley and looked surreal.

I make my popcorn with bacon “drippens”! You should try it sometime!
