Just my two cents - I'd definitely avoid wearing cream or even a very light beige to a wedding! It's too close to white and could be considered a serious breach of wedding etiquette.

Yes! It's not just white wedding guest should avoid. It's also ecru/ cream. Not every bride wants to wear pure white dress because she can not look good in it.

Really don’t get people’s need to dress in anything that could look as white in a photo anywhere near a bride. Including silver and light gold!! I knew a mother of the groom that wore silver to her son’s wedding. It was so awful. They are literally so many other colors.

I was looking for guest dresses and noticed even light pink can come off too white! It's summer and hot and I'm looking for lighter colors but some colors can come off close in different lighting

I would add,depending on the venue,consider chunkier heels/flats- its never a good look sinking into the turf even if your shoes are gorgeous

Loved these examples, for me it's always a bit tricky to find a dress that is elegant enough but not too prom-y and also doesn't look like a bridesmaid's dress :))

Lots of good advice here. I once observed a wedding party at a hotel I was staying at. The woman who stood out (in a sea of sorbet colours and prints and big hats) wore a dark blue skirt suit. The jacket was not the corporate blazer style we see all the time now, but a slim-fitting 1950's style jacket that came in at the waist. She wore no hat and her only decoration was a white carnation buttonhole. Absolute class.

Yes, neutrals and muted tones tend to be particularly elegant, and bright colours can look garish and cheap, depending on the fabric. However, bright coloured, high-quality garments may really suit the joyous spirit of a wedding. I find that my colour choice depends on the season and the location. Whenever the sun shines brightly and/or I spend time in Mediterranean countries, I am drawn to bright colours. Sometimes, neutrals and muted colours actually depress me.

Depending on the cultural background of the wedding parties, S and E Asians would probably prefer brighter colours. Black may be frowned upon.

What outstanding suggestions! I couldn’t agree more with each of them. The older one gets, the more difficult it becomes to find appropriate wedding attire since it is usually young people getting married and their friends attending. It can be tricky to appear sophisticated!

I love that several of your suggestions are actually appropriate for a church wedding!

I love florals for daytime, bright colors in satin or velvet for evening look beautiful on my dark skin. Huge fan of ruffles and draping and anything romantic for a wedding. I usually wear modest silhouettes, so fancy occasions are my favorite for puffy/swishy/girly cupcake silhouettes 😍

I love your videos! The weddings that I have attended in the Northeast US (I am in my 60's) have almost always had a band or DJ at the reception. I always wear a sleeveless dress since I spend most of the time on the dance floor :)

Oh this video helped me so much! Thank you! Ive never been to a wedding before and I was invited to one as a plus one. I have alot of tattoos and colorful hair and i want to minimize all of that to blend into thebackground of photos as much as possible. Its a challenge but your photos and the hats give me so many ideas! Im going to dye my hair a more muted toned and go for a more soft monochrome colorscheme to blend in the hair with the look. All of the sleeved pictures helped so much!

What type of shoes would you wear for the black dot dress?

Wonderful guidelines but hope you don't mind me adding another; if there is a possibility you will be in a photo with a bride who is wearing white do not choose a very light shade in a garment as it can read as a white depending upon environment, whether the photos will be in black and white rather color etc.

Omg Lydia you nailed it with jumpsuits 🙈 I wore a beautiful Navy one to a really elevated evening and got into the WC and realised I had to struggle with the Zipper down and then up again 🙈 had to come out and ask another lady to unzip me to use bathroom so embarrassing. Hubby zipped me in at home so hadn’t thought it through never bought another one and it’s in my wardrobe to date cost a fortune looks stunning on but not practical at all 💕

My only relief from pain and constant coughing was to enjoy my fashion! I think that the venue & the vibe of the event will be what determines what you should wear. In California we do a lot of vineyard & outdoor weddings so you’d definitely want to pass on the stilettos.

I remember buying a mint green structured lace dress - pride and prejudice lol - but it was not comfortable and I did not feel like 'me' in it. So the last wedding I wore a peachy satin midi dress from Ghost, and I reiss White Blazer, slightly oversized and LOVED it!

Where I live ( a rather rural area of the U.S.) I've been to weddings where the bride has spent a fortune on her dress, the groom has a stunning tuxedo and yet many of the guests have come wearing jeans and t-shirts or cargo shorts and tank tops! (No I'm not kidding!) When I attend a wedding I try to look chic but not stand out in the crowd....Unfortunately, I often do stand out because I'm one of the few that have dressed appropriately for a wedding! I think what I meant more was natural colours (things like greens, blues) rather than things that feel a little bit brash like purples and pinks together. Or if you want to wear a colour then go for the block colour rather than pattered - I think any colour works for that!

Those colours might suit you and your skin / hair / eyes, but not most people, it’s best to do a colour analysis to understand the colours that look best on you, and a summer wedding is the perfect chance to have a bit of fun and actually wear some colour

Wear a blazer or jacket over the top if you’re worried about needing to be modest for the church but then take it off for the after party

If I saw some one wearing one of those headbands I would be thinking 😳🤣😂

One thing to remember when choosing a hat: proportion is very height-dependant. Tall women look great with a wide brimmed hat. Shorter women can rock a daintier version. The reverse can look ridiculous.

Prints make me feel elderly, too girly, and awkward. I love edgy. I think others looks beautiful in prints.

I think maybe steer clear of strapless tops or anything too revealing on the top if it’s a church wedding. Keep it respectful.x

I can get behind most of your tips but colour and pattern(size) are very much dependent on the person and culture as well. Some people don’t look good in muted colours even less so in an earthy palette. Same goes for bigger or smaller patterns. If we’re assuming a traditional white wedding I would suggest to stay away from any solid pale colour that could be confused with white, when overexposed to light. Also don’t wear something too dark because most men will probably be in a suit and if the ladies wear black, navy, charcoal gray and forest green the pictures might look a bit dull and moody😅 or if they print them in black and white it might look like a funeral.

Great video. You didn't talk about showing skin. How much, where, and where not? Advice from a mother of the bride: It's a good rule of thumb to show only one area of skin. Either show your shoulders or arms or chest or back. Or a covered up top with exposed leg (depends on wedding formality). Not more than one (maybe two) areas of skin, or you'll take away the bride's spot light. Also, wear comfortable shoes you can dance in. I've seen girls get barefoot on the dance floor, then someone drops their champagne glass, and you can guess what happens next...... Unless you're on a beach or grassy lawn, keep your shoes on. Also be respectful of religious decorum. If the ceremony is in a place of worship, bring a wrap for any exposed shoulders, arms or back.
