    Hi Bharath, Nice explanation. But as per my understanding Apache Tomcat is a web server which has a servlet/jsp container to serve web related dynamic requests and it doesn't require an application server to serve a dynamic request if there is no java related technologies are used in the application(like EJB or JMS).

    Hi, thanks for the concise explanation! Quick question - why is it typical to have a Web Server serve static content, while having an application server serve dynamic content? Why not have an application server serve both?

  • @thippireddybharath

    @thippireddybharath

    6 жыл бұрын

    Ken, We typically use a web server like apache/iis for load balancing between multiple application containers.To fetch the static content the request need not go all the way to the application servers as the web servers can host those and serve quickly.

    I have seen a spring boot Microservice application. *They just have dependency tomcat.jar and then they just build the application and they run "java --jar myapp. jar"* In this embedded tomcat still a web container. Or it's application server with web container. I am confused.

    I'm a beginner. I thought originally that a Server was referred to as Hardware, but all these videos seem to be using the word "Server" for both Hardware and Software. Could anyone bother to explain the proper use of the word "Server" ?

  • @thippireddybharath

    @thippireddybharath

    6 жыл бұрын

    Prem, You are right that the Server Can be used to refer to both hardware and software.Typically a server machine hosts a server software like tomcat,web logic ,IIS , Oracle DB Server. It can host multiple of those softwares as well .

    I developed a demo project and did not install any application server but i installed Tomcat server. I used Spring framework and added Spring Jars for support in my project and performed *dependency injection* as well. So how come dependencies have been injected without even installing any application server? Did Tomcat do this? or Jars are the application container? _thanks in advance_

  • @thippireddybharath

    @thippireddybharath

    Spring acts as a light weight container.i.e it runs in the JVM just like tomcat and will scan through our classes and injects the dependencies based on config /annotations.

    at 2:30, you said Apache Tomcat is not web server but web container, then how it can serve static content?

  • @thippireddybharath

    @thippireddybharath

    4 жыл бұрын

    It is the other way around a . web container can serve static and dynamic content but a web server like apache can only serve static content.App servers like websphere can do more and provide services.

    When is tomcat not enough for me and i will need application server?

  • @thippireddybharath

    @thippireddybharath

    7 жыл бұрын

    Tomcat is enough for most of the basic web applications and it is getting better by day.But enterprise applications which need more robust services like security ,transaction management etc use application servers like websphere,web logic etc. And some of the big product dev companies which use the application servers instead of open source servers rely on the support from these companies.
