Subscription based pricing models have been popular for a while now. The unlimited subscription service model is followed by brands like Adobe, Microsoft, Sony, etc. So, whose to say that you also can’t do it for your own freelance business? Well, you could, but you’d best think it through very meticulously. When freelancers think about a web design business model, many opt for hourly rates or flat rate project fees. But, with enough time, the right systems, and a good team, there’s also the option of the unlimited subscription business model.
Essentially, this is unlimited design requests and revisions for any client that pays a monthly fee. Does the client need a new landing page? Do they need new social media branding assets? Maybe they need simple updates made to the home page? Either way, all work done would be priced under a monthly or yearly fee that the client would pay. This gives you a steady stream of income, and the client constant support for anything they might need related to their website and design assets. But as mentioned above, a subscription model for web design can work, but it can also turn out to be very stressful and taxing on you without the right supports and systems in place.

Loved your vision on this topic! My take on it is that it depends on the business view of the professional and goals. Some professionals just want to be solopreneurs and others entreupneurs. Thank you for sharing your thoughts!

Love your content - thanks for the discussion. I've been turning this over in my head for a while, and it seems to me that the niche is the most important element. You'd want clients with an above-average, consistent need for design work that isn't too labor intensive - who know exactly what they want - in other words, no hand holding with marketing strategy.I don't think this would be nearly as lucrative for most niches, or small businesses. SaaS - is the ideal industry, but not many others I can think of.

Some companies don’t know what they want at all. That’s why it’s very important, if not most important to be able to do assumption based design. And the best part is is that you can just revise as long as they keep paying monthly

Hey Brad - currently creating an offer around the unlimited subscription model but for motion/video for B2B companies. I'm curious, do you think these "unlimited subscriptions" only work when priced lower? i.e. many design subscriptions are priced around $300-$600 a month. Or do you think you can create more of a premium unlimited subscription?

Awesome question! I think if it’s a “mass market” subscription, then the price would be lower, since it’s not that specialized of an offering. But if what you’re offering is pretty niche and specialized, and/or in high demand, then necessarily it would be higher! I’ve seen video editing subscriptions that are $1k+ monthly

I am working on something very similar. A subscription based platform where I will be converting Figma designs to real web pages (React, angular, html, css, bootstrap). I will be launching it this week. So excited :-)

I have been thinking about starting a subscription based business on digital flyer design. Do you think this type of business model would work for that? Also what price point would you see for this type of subscription?...Thanks

I think it could work. Not sure how much you’d be able to charge though. If you could also design other materials and assets, in addition to flyers, then you’ll be able to charge a higher price I think.

I believe that the "Agile" methodology can be leveraged to create a system here in the subscription model. SRUM is the framework that implements the AGILE methodology. It works flawlessly throughout the software development practice throughout the world. Here's how we can do it: 1. The client can have a Project/Product Owner(PO) representing their team, 2. Designer to do the work (assigned by the design agency), 3. SRUM Master ensures the team has all the required docs, artifacts, and understandings for the SPRINT, 4. SPRINT: A 1-4 week work stretch that the team decides where the work locked within the scope would be done. Big projects involve multiple SPRINTS. NOTE: There are not Design Sprint. These are the development Sprints where you develop the work agreed upon within the SPRINT Team, 5. SPRINT Backlog: A general List of all the work needed to be done within the current SPRINT, 6. Product Backlog: A general List of all the work needed to be done in the future. If you want me to explain the details of how the system works, shoot me a dm on my socials ↙ 👉🏻 LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/mwasifzaki/ 👉🏻 Instagram: www.linkedin.com/in/mwasifzaki/
