WEAVING INSTRUCTIONS - PART 1 - wool, tools, set up for sheds & tips

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This is Part 1 in a series of weaving tutorials that are great for the beginner weaver. This video will give you lots of instruction on getting ready with the right tools and setting up your sheds to start weaving. More weaving videos will follow Part 1.
Supplies:
-Your frame loom that you have added your warp too. See Link below or check my Weaving instruction playlist for instruction on how to make your own frame.
-Different weights and different textures in your choice of yarn and your choice of colours
-Shed stick
-Weaving shuttles
I will add the link below for how to make your own shed stick and weaving shuttles. Or you can check out my Weaving instruction playlist
-1 7/16 diameter piece of wood doweling cut to fit inside the frame loom
-scissors
-Afro hair pick
-weaving needle
-scrap cardboard cut about 3" by 13" or 11" or smaller. Depending on how long you want your fringe to be
-Scrap piece of cardboard or poster board. I cut mine 6" wide by 20.5" long. Or cut yours wider or narrower depending on how long you want your weaving to be. And if your frame loom is a different size then cut your cardboard to fit inside your frame.

    I am so excited to we this process. I am saving a file of your weaving series after I watch them, for when I have time for a new major project. Textiles, texture, touchy feely art is wondrous stuff. My older sister made a hanging loom in our closet doorway going into the attic. I loved seeing the process, even though she did not like being watched.

    Monica you always post the nicest comments! I am excited that you are excited. The funny thing is, is that even I don’t know what I’m going to do on the last parts until I actually get in there and see what comes to me. So the last part will be exciting for me too! I will also have all the weaving videos in my “Weaving Instructions playlist”. Thanks again Monica for your great support!

    Thanks for watching the weaving videos! Glad you are enjoying them. Not sure which stick. The wood dowel that is threaded between the warp threads to form a shed, that is a shed stick and the stick that is used as a bobbin to thread the yarn through the warp threads is a shuttle.

    Just to be clear, I warped my loom using all the nails as you showed in your video. I just wanted to know if I could go over and under one instead of two at a time with it warped this way... By the way, I love your tutorials!

  • @CraftyPattiArtsCrafts

    @CraftyPattiArtsCrafts

    Hi Virginia. I purposely did two rows of nails so you could do fine weaving as well as heavier weaving. If you have a fine yarn or wool then definitely weave under and over just one warp thread. If you want to use bulkier yarn than you have the option to weave under and over 2 warp threads.

    What is the distance between each nail

  • @CraftyPattiArtsCrafts

    @CraftyPattiArtsCrafts

    The loom I made was designed so you can use just use the outer nails which would be 1/2 inch apart or you can use both rows of nails which would make them 1/4 in apart.

    I’m so confused! Lol! I have pics to show you why. How do I send an email to show you? Your instructions are so easy to follow but my shed stick doesn’t look right after I put in the cardboard piece.

    I’m now wondering, was I suppose to start the warp threads on the bottom left inside nail and finish on the bottom right hand side on the outside nail. Mine has me starting on the bottom inside nail and finishing on the top outside nail.

    Hi Linda. It doesn’t matter which peg or nail you start on as long as you have and even amount of warp threads so you can go over 2 and under 2. Or if you have chosen to use less warp threads then over 1 and under 1.

  • @CraftyPattiArtsCrafts

    As long as you can change your sheds back and forth then you will be good to go. Don’t worry about the cardboard too much. The cardboard is to just use so your first row of weaving is nice and straight. If your shed stick at the top of your weaving has gone over 2 and under 2 then your halfway there. When you weave back the other way you will have to manually go under 2 and over 2 to form your 2nd shed. Hope that helps you. If you still want to send photos my email is craftypatti60@gmail.com
