Weaving Halvdräll Kitchen Towels // Weaving with SweetGeorgia // Lo Meets Loom

Weaving Halvdräll has been so much fun. Gorgeous blocks of colour are so easy to weave with this Halvdräll weave structure. I just finished a set of kitchen towels using this draft and loved the colour play.

Well I signed up for the school! I recently acquired a Leclerc Nilus loom! My husband found it for $350. Also came with a spinning wheel, raw wool.... holy cow. It needs some TLC, due to water damage from the attic it was in. Ive already ripped apart the bench and started stripping the old varnish etc. need to fix the water damage. I'm hoping when I share on the community forums I can get to some help. Looking forward to the classes! And learning from you and the community. 😎

Looking forward to "graduating" to a floor loom at some point. Started on a rigid heddle and just inherited a 4 shaft table loom. I'm on my way! 😊 In terms of finishing, coming from the knitting world, I tend to soak with wool wash first. After that, having then used them (especially for cotton towels) I'd throw them in the washer.

Hi. I keep them all together and wash them. Then I cut them and/ or serge them apart. I have tried to serge them apart before washing but that unravelled and caused more problems. Just one weavers opinion!

I had to add floaters also. Your colors got me thinking and I remembered someone use embroidery floss once for weaving. I had a lot from my grandma. My motto this year is to use what I have and this weave structure was perfect for it.

Hi! I enjoyed your project. I will have to try it. I have to admit that I'm a very lazy weaver. I usually just use a white warp and depend on pattern for the interest. I have been weaving for almost 50 years and have gotten addicted to towels. I usually put 7 yards on and then change the pattern mid warp if I get bored. I triple zigzag before cutting, cut, trim extra threads. I then wash in hot soapy water and machine dry. Hand hem, press with a damp towel. And always put my personalized tag on each towel.

For washing my towels, (I use the same contrasting threads to delineate each towel), I tie together my loom waste from the beginning and end of my warp so my yardage is in a loop (this helps it not get all twisted in the washing machine), throw it all in the washing machine, then dryer. Then I cut the giant loop apart, iron the whole yardage, cut them apart by serging along the contrasting threads, surge the other end of the towels, then machine hem. It really saves on steps. I love your colour choices for your towels Felicia!

I love Arianna’s Halvdrall pattern, I’ve used it a couple of times now.. I didn’t use floating seal edges and on those blocks where weft didnt come right out to edge I sort of made sure there was a bit of loose weft out the side, and after wet finishing a use the selvedges look fine. I also finish my towels with a rolled double hem sewn on machine with a fairly long stitch . I think it might have been. Janet Dawson class where I learnt to put in a pick of say cotton machine sewing thread , in different colour, where the folds will be and it makes it easier to fold exactly and that thread just gets pulled out!

Love this structure, definite next warp! I separate my towels with a single pick of doubled yarn matching my background colour, this way I don't get coloured lint in my hem turnings, then same as Sue Anne I zigzag, cut trim ends to a couple of cm so they don't tangle & pull. Then wash with a low speed spin to avoid getting permanent creases, line dry and turned hem. Return for a final end trim flush with fabric.

Thanks for this, halvdrall is on my list to do. I have some plain weave towels with floral overshot borders on the loom right now and also find it very therapeutic to weave plain weave! I finish my towels almost the same way you do, except I zigzag along the edges before cutting the towels apart. Then wash, dry, snip ends and hand sew a rolled hem. I’ll be curious to know how the Duet washes up and how suitable it is for a towel. I’ve used Duet for scarves but not for towels. I like the texture but find it a bit stiffer than regular Cottolin.

I’m just getting ready to wind this warp this weekend, so your video is timely for me! It looks like it will be fun to weave! I have lots of 8/2 cotton and just the right amounts of leftover Duet from other projects. I was planning on playing with the sett. The pattern calls for 25 EPI, which seems like it would be pretty dense and stiff, being used to weaving 8/2 at 18 EPI, so may open this up and be left with a little wider towel as a result. Maybe I’m wrong and the pattern weft floats will get too loosey goose at a more open sett. If you do an update on these towels after wet finishing, I will be interested to see the finished drape. I love the colors you used; your project looks so lovely. Thanks for the inspiration!

For sure! I would usually use 18 to 20 epi for 8/2 cotton in plain weave too. For this one it seems that the PPI was supposed to be about 18 (I think, if I remember correctly) which prevents the cloth from being super stiff. I think the floats create fewer interlacements and that’s why it’s a higher EPI. Looking forward to seeing how your cloth turns out!!

I wove those back when the weave-a-long was going on. It was a fun project. I did blues, yellows, and whites.I agree with using the floating edge. Honestly, towels aren't my thing. I feel like I put too much work, time, and money into materials for something to wipe up spills and goo. I gave them as gifts, but honestly, few people appreciated them as they can get similar for $1.99 at the grocery and not feel guilty about wiping up goo, the ones that understand the effort that goes into them. The others see them and mentally price them cheaply, as that's what they know they can purchase similar for.

I definitely felt the same way when I wove my first towels. But I really love these special pieces I had in my kitchen and bathroom. Now I just buy Dollar Tree towels for the heavy, staining messes and use my handwoven towels for the lighter ones. Even still, my handwoven ones all have met grease and oil at some point. I just don’t feel so bad about it anymore.

One thing you neglected to mention (unless I missed it, in which case I'm sorry) was that this draft is written for a sinking-shed loom. I have a jack loom (rising shed). I found this out by putting the draft in my weaving software. The "right side" was on the back. It took a bit of thinking but, in the tie-up, I changed every black square to white, and every white square to black. VOILA! the cloth looked correct. I left the treadling bottom-to-top since it makes SO much more sense. Having dyslexia, the picture looks like what I see on the loom, a huge help.

@@sweetgeorgia It also helps us understand better. At first I thought you were alternating all white blocks with white-color (tabby - pattern) blocks. But mine didn’t look like yours. I loaded the color palette with your colors, and skipped adding all-white blocks. It worked! I have my first towel drafted. I want to have some fun designing on the loom, but will draft a second towel first. I want to check my spacing for hems.

I'm a knitter who's slowly falling head first in love with weaving and I was curious if you might have a video or a blog post where you might mention some good books for a beginner weaver so I can do some good research before I really explore getting a loom. :) Thank you so much if you can help ♥

I am Setting up for my halvdrall this weekend - I am using blues for my set up. I did first block 50 beige 50 royal blue 50 beige - middle block is 30 cyan blue, 30 beige 30 steel blue and the last block will be 50 beige, 50 dark blue 50 beige. The blues are all cotton and the beige is a cottolin. Because the beige is a cottolin I don’t anticipate a lot of shrinkage.

Hi Felicia, this pattern looks fun and not so overwhelming. I've just finished my second project on my Baby Wolf (I'm brand new to weaving-- started with rigid heddle because multi-shaft seemed too complicated) and I think I'm ready for a more complex threading and weave structure. I plan to make it in Bockens Cottolin and maybe some Brassard 8/2 cotton, because I have tons of colors in those. That should work, right? Would you use just one type for the warp or do you think it's ok to mix cottolin and 8/2 cotton in the warp. Were you happy mixing the duet and 8/2 cotton in the weft? as for finishing, I weave an inch of plain weave using sewing thread for the weft between towels which greatly reduces the bulk of the hem. After wet finishing, I sew parallel lines and cut between them, machine overcast and then do a machine rolled hem. the straight stitch step is probably excessive. Thank you for all the great info and encouragement!

@@sweetgeorgia I’m now reading more about Halvdrall and it looks like I need a pattern weft that is thicker than the tabby weft. I see that the Duet is a little thicker than the 8/2 cotton. Unfortunately, I only have 8/2 and cottolin. Would it be a mistake to make it without a thicker yarn?
