Interesting that of all the Twin Cities on-air meteorologists which I met (while also spending much time with MPX forecasters then) in/through this time frame, only Paul Douglas was smart enough regarding #anthropogenicclimatechange.

Where I grew up it was the Rochester MN NWS office when open and our home country had a three pronged spotter system. You had skywarn spotters as well as the sheriffs department. You also had the country volunteer fire departments and with everyone trained it was an effectice way to watch the skies during severe weather.

All of these Warning slides are terrifying- they were terrifying when I was 10, they are still terrifying now. Channel 11's slide in particular, because I'm linking it with an actual warning...maybe sometime mid-80's...dunno. The Emergency Broadcast System slide from KMSP in the early 80s and the Klaxon on WCCO radio...stuff of 1980's childhood nightmares.

It's not a Tornado Warning. It's a TORNADO TORNADO Warning. They should have used this one for the Picher, NE tornadoes in 2014 when there were two separate EF4 twisters a few hundred yards apart, and also for the double (multivortex) Dublin, IN tornado in 1965. There were probably a plethora of radical tornado warning slides out there from the 1970s through the 1990s in particular (individual TV station slides were much more artistic than the cable EAS slides/screens used nowadays in my humble opinion), but this is one of the best ones I've seen on KZread. The Channel 4 slide is also pretty impressive, as it had an ominous cloud background and large letters reading "TORNADO WARNING", but I like the Channel 11 slide the best even though it did not indicate whether or not the Twin Cities were included in the warning as the other stations' slides did. The one from KMTV in Omaha during the 1980s and early 1990s is my other favorite, along with the red pinstripe KMTV, Sioux City, IA slide that used to be on KZread (a video from 1992 that I can no longer find) - as well as the WHAS (Louisville, KY) slide from the 1980s and the early '90s. KARE 11 stands out for me as the station with one of the earliest (I believe) helicopter-filmed twisters in history. I had a meteorology class at a local community college in Harrisburg, PA taught by local TV (WHTM ABC 27) meteorologist Rob Dixon (now retired from TV broadcasting) in 2006, and he showed us the unforgettable video of what he called the "KARE tornado" (F2) from 1986. Mr. Dixon used to work for another Minneapolis station, I believe, although I do not remember which one - most likely one of the ones mentioned here. I do not remember any Tornado or Severe Thunderstorm slides from the late '80s or 1990s in Harrisburg, as I was young at the time and we do not have much severe weather here.

Also, I am wondering when the KARE 11 "Tornado Tornado Warning" slide was introduced (and when it was discontinued). It looks rather advanced for the mid-'80s. I am guessing it was introduced when the station turnover occurred, and discontinued sometime in the early to mid-1990s. Does anyone have further information on this? Thanks!

@@SirGregoireGooch KARE 11 DID have the 1st helicopter filmed tornado on July 18, 1986. It touched down right before the 5 PM news came on the air and they were luck because they had the chopper out earlier that day getting another story. So a bit of luck helped and that event helped KARE 11 as many people tuned into the news that night and decided to continue to watch it in the future.

I did not see it here, but wonder if anyone has a recording of it. For clarity's sake, I mean the "Very Severe Thunderstorm Warning" slide, not the "Severe Thunderstorm Warning" slide. I think the Minneapolis NWS issued "Very Severe Thunderstorm Warnings" during this time period - one of the only, if not the only, NWS offices to do so, but I am not sure the TV stations would have used different graphics for these warnings as opposed to ordinary Severe Thunderstorm Warnings.
