@christophermiller7532

He was there the year before. I was at the "meltdown" concert and to be honest, Jaco killed it. He got into beef with the band and they walked off. He then did a bass solo of Purple haze and I was blown away but he looped it, put the bass down and walked off stage. Weather Report never came back but Jaco decided to do a solo of Purple Haze for about a minute and a half until they turned the stage and Cosby introduced the next act. That solo from Jaco was amazing. I mean if it's around, it's some of the best bass solo work I've ever seen live.

I cannot think of it right now, maybe someone will help me out with that. Anyway, I already knew that Josef Zawinul of Weather Report had written the song and the band recorded it. Thank goodness one the Manhattan Transfer group acknowledged that during a brief interview. I was about to say," HOLD ON...WHAT! You best own up! @@christophermiller7532 I have to admit that i don’t know too much about some Jazz festivals around the US. What i do know is that (world) music has been added to get the crowd volume. Same is happening in Europe and around the world. And yes Covid has had an enormous (negative) impact specially for those musicians. Be well and Covid free. G’day & Cheers!

@@nielsanderson4926 Niels you have a good point. In the late 1950’s and the whole of the 1970’s i went to small live-club gigs of visiting American jazz great. Also to several times to the NSJ in The Hague as well as the MJF in Switzerland. Now these festivals have become more - world music - with a small section of Jazz. Sad but true. If i’m correct jazz aficionados are about 5% world wide. Stay safe, toodeloo’s & Cheers!

It's terrible, the worst camp, broadway styled cringe with zero musical worth
This tune brings back so many good memories 2021 🎵
Wayne Shorter always looks like he is conserving energy. R.I.P. Victor Bailey. His red 1966 Jazz was drop dead gorgeous and he sounded like a million dollars when he played it too!
Very good music... Fabolous
Una música directo al espíritu, mucho talento todos
This just flat-out kicks ass!
This morning I was feeling low and full of cold...went for a walk and back tired...the news was all lockdown and restrictions.....then this came up....It was so beautiful I just burst into tears...Its wonderful...made me so so happy. Say you don't like jazz....I challenge you not to love this! It's just full of talent, skill, joy and such wonderful singing....mind if you have the best backing band in the world - you better be good!
I have no idea how do you feel about such music events but.. true happiness for me looks precisely like this guys, sounds like this & wishing you everybody turn back & paaaarty again, young generations deserve this precise input, let yourselves go & let it be fun like nuts, time for paaaarty guys 🤗🎁😊😊🙋🤩😊🥂🥳🤩🙋😊🎿🎁🍀🌺🎻🍾👏🎻🍾💐🍾🎂🍾🎂👍🍾🎂👍👍🤗👏🤗🎁👏🤗🎁👏
Actually, the lyrics are by Jon Hendricks, who wrote a lot of lyrics for The Manhattan Transfer. I remember reading years ago that originally Eddie Jefferson was asked to write the lyrics but he died before he finished, so they got Jon Hendricks to write them.

yep...and most of their classic work is on their Anthology 2-disc set: Down In Birdland. Including songs from other albums like Route 66

Wow! Wish I was there.
Classic Jazz!
Fantastic 👏
Fantastic sound,from the Philippines
I was there.
Very interesting to see Victor Bailey play Jaco's solos and stuff. It's such a Jaco era song I've always wondered what it would sound like with him playing.

@@christophermiller7532 it was a horrible time for Jaco. I wish he’d made an appearance here that could have been taped. Zawinul wasn’t a big fan of tv cameras unfortunately.
Semplicemente fantastico
Fantastico!
Bellissima indimenticabile
Thank You! 🤗
what fun!!
I was at this concert. My parents are clapping @ 1:48 (black balding man 6-5" and white lady to his right) and pops at 6:24 is the tall man with a sport coat (pops was odd) taller than everyone. It was a great concert. I was running around because I was 18 and looking for girls but it was one of the best Playboy Jazz festivals I went to and I've been to about 10 of them.
Amazing
No words!
Wonderful...
Fantastic
Unforgettable!
I once saw a clip of Manhattan Transfer do this w/o Weather Report. Maybe it was American Bandstand or one of those musical shows from the 80s like AB. Tell them who originally wrote and recorded the song that you somehow got lyrics to!
I'm in heaven, man!!!
Say what you want about Playboy, Hefner invested in jazz. The festival gave lots of artists a good gig and exposure to a wider audience. And fun to see the crowd on their feet dancing!
Excellent...
Great feel good music.
Def an excellent collab here.
Espectacular los Manhattan 4 voces inigualables los Weather aunque aquí no está Jaco músicos adorables pero que hace un conejo en la tierra de los pájaros. No vale decir...comiendo zanahorias. Buen video
Jaco would have love to play with them❤
I’ve got chills…
Sensational
I met thèse fine gentlemen in a diner just outside Jacksonville many years ago. We talked for many minutes and I was impressed by their consumption of waffles in syrup. Very impressive.
this tempo is wild - and good for MT for keeping in some kind of key with that odd keyboard bass drone drifting flat and then sharp!
