Check also BBN Marine OS for raspberry pi4. Many free and opensource boat software packages preinstalled and preconfigured. It has many SSB and HAM programs preinstalled

To connect a laptop to your ssb to receive Sailmail emails for weather forecast texts, do you need a Pactor modem?

I am not sure but to receive weather fax on your hf radio you need a lead to go from your Radio headphone jack to the mic input of your laptop. I used to do it. You also download a programme like JVComm32 PC-Based HF Weather fax. It is cheap and free. Only problem is that less stations are sending out weather fax but i still think there is enough to cover the world.
