Weapon Expert Reacts To Elden Ring Swords and Heavy Weapons | Part 2
Ойындар
Our favourite weapon expert, Matt Easton, of Schola Gladiatoria, is back on IGN to react to even more weapons! Matt is an all around sword, historic weapon and HEMA expert, and today he'll be taking a look at IGN's Game of the Year for 2022, Elden Ring.
From the rapier like Bloody Helice, to the absurd Axe of Godfrey and the deadly Nightrider Flail, Matt breaks down just how realistic these weapons are, how they're used and what they could be inspired by.
Matt Easton is a Historical European Martial Artist, Antique Arms Dealer, and owner of the fencing club Schola Gladiatoria.

It helps that the axe of Godfrey originally belonged to a guy who was like 9 feet tall and ripped.

And a detail he wouldn’t notice is one of the axe heads is broken. Am slightly dissappointed the player example doesn’t use the Ash of War to turn the heavy attack into a stomp, I’m sure he would find it amusing and not sure if he would know if there is a martial art that utilizes stomps.

1:25 "This is a fantasy setting, so I'm not going to worry about that." Man I'm love the way he approaches this topic. It has always annoyed me, in these types of videos, that experts were taking those fantasy weapons at face value. This guy is appreciating the fantasy-aspect of it, commenting on the creativity of it, instead of talking it down as merely unrealistic and useless. We know it is unrealistic; it's fantasy. Thank you for seeing that.

@Nat_the_Chicken

@@dingdongspaghetti Well, pointing it out is one thing. Right before this he said something like "I'm not sure how on earth you would make this thing," so he _did_ point out how unrealistic it would be to see it in actual medieval combat. He just didn't spend his whole time looking at it complaining about how they could ever come up with original ideas for weapons in a fantasy game (which limits the amount you get out of the criticism as a viewer), he did his best to compare it to things he was familiar with, and guess about the most effective way to use it. Pointing it out isn't an issue, it's ruthless criticism and refusal to even consider it in any other light which is annoying, because it kind of misses the point of the video.

The thing about the bloody helice (corkscrew blade) is that in game it has a passive bleed effect on the weapon so it actually kind of makes sense when considering that the cyclone knife leaves a wound that is very difficult to treat.

Funny he mentions the urumi, it's actually in the game.
My favorite part is that he gives the strength benefit of a doubt, acknowledging that these characters are incredibly strong
suggestions for the next episode: great move set and style to analyse: - zweihander - uchikatana - rivers of blood - godskin peeler - double scavenger sword (with parry ash of war) - flowing curved sword fun options: - nox (urumi, hammer and sword) - magma whip - family heads - ringed finger - hand balista - visage shield / one eyed shield also, if possible, do a special episode for the ashes of war. they are the best for this type of videos because of how they modify the weapon usage. wild strikes, barbaric roar, sword dance, unsheathe, etc. great series!

This is a great video! Kinda weird that part 2 was recommended before part one. Lol
They really thought duping, powerstancing and avoid using the Weapon Art of the Dark Moon GS was a great idea to showcase the most iconic weapon of the entire franchise to the weapon expert. And obviously him talking about the Urumi didn't ring any bell. Classic IGN...

There isn't much to say about the sword itself, tbh. "It's... a really wide greatsword" pretty much sums it up. As a HEMA expert he's at least as interested in the technique of using the weapons as he is in their design, and "how would you effectively use this weapon" is how he approached everything in the video. For that one, it wasn't an incredibly innovative design, and they happened to show him a clip of it being dual-wielded, which is indeed practically ridiculous.

It does help that, like in most modern fromsoft games, it is acknowledged that one can use the respective games currency to aquire quote:"Inhuman Strength".
It makes me so happy that he was so pleased with the bloody helice. It's one of my absolute favourite weapons.

Matt has a keen sense of context (he always says that it's one of the most important things when talking about something) so he's able to understand that something impractical in the real world can make sense in a fantasy setting.
really liked his approach, looking at the weapons within their fantasy context
Can't get over how he mentions the modern corkscrew being meant to cause huge blood loss and not that the Bloody Helice has that exact same function remarked in its description (which even showed up on screen!)
The thing about the flail too while spinning it, is that a fixed chain would not spin properly, it would get nudged side to side and the chains would get twisted, it would need to be altered a bit to make that motion
That cyclone knife made me feel ill
The "corkscrew" shape you mention isn't actually that hard to make, Matt - augers and twist drills are made in much the same way. The difficulty comes in sharpening the damn thing, although it isn't clear how sharp it would be. You're right that the heat-treat would probably cause some hard-to-predict warping, though!
Nice to see Matt Easton getting the recognition he deserves
disclaimer: as someone who does blacksmithing you definetly can make the bloody helice by twistng cold metal, although it wouldnt be very strong or particularly useful as a sword you would definitely be able to make this sword
Cracked up when he mentioned dual-wielding halberds, like thats not the pvp meta rn haha
@OG1Donut

those are dual lances, dual halberds are kinda mid if you only use the dual wielding moveset.
im glad they got Matt. He's super knowledgeable of swords and stuff.
certified matt easton innuendos in this video, nice work.
The spinning flail could be a defensive option, essentially a way to negate an incoming blow by tangling it. It would negate your own offense as well, but if you have two then it's fine.
"...a pike in each hand." Quick, someone show him an average day in the Colosseum!
To make the bloody helica, you could simply forge the blade like a traditional blade to begin with and than you would heat up the the blade for the "twist" and turn it until you reached the desired twist ratio, finally you would coat the exposed core (and ONLY the core) with a type of fire clay (like the kind used for katanas) before finally heat treating the edge
7:38 "how could anybody use an axe of this size?" just put 50 points into strength and you will be fine
Even IGN got invaded by Patches, this guy is everywhere!
To be fair on the Axe of Godfrey, he is a BEHEMOTH of a man that actually managed to _shatter_ the other side of that axe so the size does makes sense
I'd love to see the sword expert and the gun expert react to Remnant: From the Ashes before the sequel comes out!
A couple of these weapons are specifically Bleed weapons, which matches up with the historical and real world weapons mentioned (Cyclone, blade whip, etc)
I've done 5 playthroughs of Elden Ring and never knew about the Bloody Helice until now
You should've showed him weapons wielded in 2 hands as well plus the weapon art, also there is an Urumi (Nox Flowing Sword) in the game as well, show him that!
Matt Easton is great. I've been watching him for a long time.
That corkscrew sword looks like a down sized core drill you'd use to go ice fishing and drill a hole in the ice! :)
I'm just happy that he gave my babies, Hoslow's Petal Whips, a glowing review.
That corkscrew blade looks like someone attempted to weaponize a ice drill
If you didn't know the Bloody Helic has a Cutting Sweep attack on its Super move
Ain’t no way. Patches is out here reviewing weapons!
The approval for Hoslow's Petal Whip brings me great pride, as it has been my weapon of choice.
Coiling blades are fun to make. It's like making an incredibly large drill bit!
The thing with melee weapon proportions is they don't really change with a character's size and strength. Certain ratios are always ideal for delivering maximum kinetic energy when accounting for velocity and weight as the two components, only difference is the overall size of the weapon which increases or decreases with the size of the user
8:05 that's a great shot
"... and causes huge blood loss quickly..." It's ironic how this is weirdly accurate
Now am thinking about weapon expert react to enemies/minibosses/bosses moveset
Please do a part 3! Include bows and crossbows and throwing knives
This person knows what they’re talking about. So many people on KZread don’t regarding weapons and how to use them.
Take into consoderation that the guy using the whip can lifte 15 inch thick 10 by 30 feet solid steel doors. So the power behind his whip swings and swings in general are nutso. Take into consideration that a real life grizzly bear. One of the worlds most dangerous creatures. Is legitimately one of the absolute weakest things in the game can be killed with a few dagger swings.
Regarding the Bloody Helice: What if the "Corkscrew" were a sort of sheath, with a locking mechanism in the handle? Inside the corkscrew would be an estoc!
To be fair the axe of godfrey belonged to a hulk sized man and the petal whip was ceremonial, not meant for battle.
12:14 you can get Urumi in elden ring xD
Ive watched the the Witcher video and fell in love with this man. And now he reacts to my most fav game atm? My day cant get any better.
To be fair 7:40 the one who that acts was made for in elden rings floor was literally massive to begin with
Man they should do a new one with some of thr DLC weapons. Would be really interesting to see what an expert would say about the light greatswords and their moveset, as it is absolutely incredible. Especially since each attack ends in a stance which you can use to delay your combos, or even flow between heavy anf light attacks. In honesty ints probably the most versatile and fluid moveset of any from game so far.
When the nobles use the Helice they do use thrusting and they are strong the design is meant to cause bloodloss like the guy said

Wow whoever provided the game footage completely dropped the ball. The expert got hung up on why the player was dual wielding cumbersome weapons when we could be focusing on the weapons themselves and the subject of the video. There is a reason why there is a strength benefit in-game for two-handing one weapon..
Plot twist: Dude is actually one of the consultants for the game.😱
Bloody Helice could be done with some free spinning elements, it would just make it even more unwieldy.
"How would you block with it?" Tarnished rolly pollying around like a chad- "Am I a joke to you?"
