I used a board with finish nails and white tags to keep my sows eartag and farrowing date on to keep track of things.

The free pens for new calves would cost more than the extra milk replacer I would guess.out Calves look off to a good start, and that is a point of satisfaction for you.

we don't buy much bag milk but most of our calves stay on milk for 3 months. have you tried mulch or saw dust in your pens? I just know it works good in the barn never tried it out side.

disgusting to see how you guys steal from calves their mother's love and separate them and force this tiny calves to feed on grass forcefully at the age of just 2 months all for your greed of milk.Calves have the first right to get enough milk and mothers love. but you not only let calves suffer from their right to get mother's milk but mother's love too. never deprive any creature from parental sp. mother's care. Shame on selfish greedy so call cultured and advanced human race.

How old are they getting castrated at? In my experience with cattle, whether it be beef calves or dairy calves I wait till they are 3 to 6 months old. Always has worked fine for me. Plus the extra time helps them bulk up a little better.

Hey mate, just curious as to whether you've ever noticed any kind of 'withdrawal type behaviour' when calves go from bottle to bucket (pale)? Thanks for any time you can spare to answer!

Do you wean these calves off abruptly at 50 days or slowly over a 10 day period?

Hey Robert. I have done both actually. Firm believer in a complete wean off at 50 days. If I think they are just a little under developed....I will take it to 60.

New to your channel, I have tried raising bottle fed Holstien calves and never did make a penny. Im going to look at some of your other videos. Do you ever talk about the actual profit and loss that you have??? The problem i see is everyone wants to be a back yard farmer and no one keeps track of profit and loss ,I think most people loose money but dont care because its a hobby to them.

  • @veesercattleco.4111

I don't talk much on the $$. If it was a loss....I wouldn't do it. I will admit that the profit margin is really pathetic right now.

Thanks for the reply. Its very hard to find anyone that shares there numbers. We have plenty of land to run cattle on but botttle fed Holstien was always a loss for us. Im guilty of only doing something if its profitable and i keep track of every penny. I wish people would track there numbers and stop flooding the market with these subsidized cattle, and i mean subsidized from there own pocket because they always sell at a loss.

Gary Watts I understand your point of view, but your competition is beef from abroad. Not backyard producers. I’m a backyard bottle calf meat producer and sell to friends and family and seems to work alright for me. It shouldn’t be illegal to run a business at a small loss should it?

Good morning!! As we all know...calves must be separated while on the bottle in a perfect world. Hutches are cheaper versus putting up a barn with deprecated pens or retrofitting an existing barn. Depends on how many you want to raise at 1 time I guess?

i wouldn't consider 70 days at weaning, to be excessive. yes, it costs a bit more, but you get a better calf as a result. you might find it pays off when you come to sell them.

We do 60 days. Spot on two months, nice healthy calves and we think the extra 10 days is financially worthwhile in calf size and health. Guess everyone has their preference.

  • @Foxkitten86

They're born with great big chompers. The newborn calf gets the mother's colostrum, that is the very early milk, and then up to the first nine milkings, her milk is separated out to be fed to the calves, and won't be sold because it isn't yet true milk. The calves are fed powdered milk and they thrive on it. If the calves grew up with their mothers, YOU wouldn't be having dairy products.
