Balance is the key when riding any motorcycle. And we’re not talking about just balancing on two wheels: We’re talking about the balance between size, weight, power and handling that makes some bikes great-like the new Honda CRF300L. Way better off having it bend, rather than break. Many aftermarket levers are less likely to bend, but more likely to just snap off, which in my opinion is a worse situation.

Bingo. Bending is much better than breaking, or transferring more force back to the pivot point. It's not "cheap," it's well-designed for that particular use case.

an aftermarket brake lever might be a good idea…..but keep the stock gear lever as its like the sacrificial piece rather than transfer the impact into the gear shaft/gearbox…and you can bend it back

If you were to ask a Honda engineer, it’s killing two birds with one stone., to be cost effective, and reliable at the same time. It’s a justifiable reason to save money while being the perfect solution to preventing further damage, as most dirt bikes are built this way.

Had exact same thing happen to me down in the Pine Barrens. Got it bent back enough to ride for the day, but ended up replacing it anyway. Gonna get one of those brake snakes. I think that would prevent this again.

I've replaced so many parts on my Rally so far, and dumped it several times, but I still haven't replaced my shift lever or brake pedal yet🤞 Eventually plan on replacing both when I put some foot pegs on it. Those are usually the first things people install. I'm starting to feel like I've done all my mods backwards lol

That's happened to me twice now. Both times a strong boot has got it 80% back to where it was. A monkey wrench was perfect for the rest at home. Have since had a bash plate fitted which seems to cover the front of the brake lever quite a bit so hoping it will provide some protection next time I fall.

I compared little details of my WR250R with those of a CRF300L. I gotta say it looks like they threw a bunch of cheap stuff on the Honda. Quite the difference.

Me and my wife both have 300l and she managed to bend the gear shift lever into the engine once and at another drop the brake lever into almost perfect reverse question mark... For shift lever it was enough to bend it back by hands bu the brake lever had to be fixed by a friend who works with metal.. Those stock levers are tragic and need to go!

As others have said, these are sacrificial items. They are meant to break. Look up damaged transmission 300l to see what happens when the lever doesn’t break (spoiler: it involves splitting the engine case!)

“Brake Snake” cbles re not gonna keep you from bending the brake lever under a hit big enough to curl it bck onto the footpeg…that small cable will snap in a heartbeat. Boomers know the origin of the brake snake idea was to keep weeds, tall grass and brush from getting lodged in between the lever and the frame….not to prevent the pedal from bending.
