I agree it's kinda funny but to be fair there aren't a lot of alternatives for easy to remove/temporary adhesives, there's tape which is also plastic, Elmer's glue which is made of PVA (yet another thermoplastic), a few sprays and there are several types of putty adhesives such as Blu Tac. There's probably a few I'm unaware of but you get the idea, most of the weaker and common glues are made from a plastic.

I’m loving the eco-awareness videos lately. I’m an artist who recycles plastic items to make art in order to give them a value. It’s not perfect, as paints and glues are polluting, but it’s my way of spreading awareness.

Now that you’ve shown the problem, can you do a video walking through how to put solutions to it into practice? I think its especially helpful to see social-related things, such as refusing straws and asking to have your food/drinks in your own container, because people can often feel weird about doing it (including me)

I suggest everyone do a personal waste audit to see the most problematic items. Then you make a list of priorities and think of ways of reducing. Getting the same food items in the largest size possible or bringing your own sandwich instead of buying one. Bring a Tupperware for your leftovers when eating out, make your own cleaning products etc. The list is endless. Be creative and try to get a bit better every day. Good luck.

Although I didn't ask my students to wear their plastic, I did a similar project with my second graders last year. The entire school had a week long project about the environment and sustainability, and as part of that we asked all students and staff members to collect all their plastic in bins for a week and at the end of the week my students made a huge mural out of all the plastic to show everyone how much plastic we collectively use in a single week without even realising it.

I love when Mitch asked “should we ban plastic?” because I think there’s a lot of misconceptions about that. For one, banning plastic doesn’t get rid of the waste. It’s still there. There’s also the idea that a lot of waste in the ocean comes from less developed countries (less that 1% is from the U.S.). Paper products also take up more space and are more expensive to ship, so why are we just switching to paper instead of trying to fix the actual problem?

I'm old and was born before plastic became ubiquitous, so I am always very conscientious about limiting plastic items. In fact I was recently outside when the garbage trucks came and one of the guys wanted to know what we do with the rest of our garbage since we generally only put the bin out every other week. I told them we eat a whole food, plant based diet and grow a lot of our own food so there is little packaging or other waste to toss. I compost organic matter, recycle or re-purpose glass, metal, boxes, and the occasional plastic bottle, so there is very little actual waste. Every little bit helps and we all need to be more aware.

  • @philplasma

Great video - I haven't gone as far as you did in terms of attaching it to yourselves, but I've been monitoring how much garbage I put out which is almost exclusively plastic wrap for food that I don't recycle as it is too contaminated with food. (my town has recycling pick-up and compost pickup and a drop-off place to bring both expanded or extruded polystyrene packaging or products) Doing this really brought to light how pervasive this issue is. Things I've changed: only buying fruit and veg that is loose; buying rice and pasta at a bulk place with my own containers, supporting vendors who ship using paper packaging and reusing wherever and whenever possible. One thing, though, bread comes wrapped in a purpose made plastic bag which helps to keep it fresh. I haven't yet figured this one out. Also, meat or meat alternative packaging, always plastic; helps to keep it fresh. I'll have to give this more thought. Thanks again for the great video.

Nice! Maybe your next project could have something to do with urban watersheds? I'm an environmental scientist in an urban environment , and a lot of people don't realize that they live in a watershed. In most cities, the storm system (outdoor drain inlets) is separate from the sewer system (indoor drains). In these areas, litter on the street makes its way directly to creeks, rivers, bays and oceans -- because storm drains were designed to convey only rain and thus are not treated. Thus, any litter on the street = in our waterways. REDUCING single use waste is an easy way for anyone to be the solution to water pollution! Thanks for spreading this message!

This experiment is so great! I think it brings out to light the plastic problem in a funny but also educational way. I would add that, yes, consumers have a part of fault in the problem, we must educate ourselves and try to help it, but companies and governments have a big responsibility in this too!! (If not the most). Sometimes we are forced to use plastic and companies can prevent that many of the times.

  • @coppersandsprite
    @coppersandsprite4 жыл бұрын

There are now a variety of companies with alternatives to plastics. One start-up has designed a reusable straw that opens for cleaning. You can find reusable mesh bags for produce. Bamboo untensils and plateware. Edible utensils that are safe for wildlife to eat as well as humans. Washable "paper" towels. Cleaning supplies that come in disks to reduce plastic use. If your grocery store has a butcher counter, that eliminates the plastic from meat purchases. The more we turn to these types of products, the cheaper and more available they will become.

You should take a look at how Denmark handles garbage - we actually impute garbage from other countries. We use it, for example, for heating houses and building materials for roads :) We also have a system where we pay an extra small amount of money for our bottles and cans, then we return them to the store, when they are used, and we will get the money back

I do a decent job at the 6 R's but I can do better, and it's reinspiring to see you fellas shed light on it too. I bring my own coffee up or ask the barista to serve my iced coffee in a paper cup and my hot coffee without the lid. And I bring a glas straw with me most of the time. Of course reusable bags EVERY time I shop for groceries or go to the mall for clothing. But I want to get better at bringing my own tuppaware to restaurants! And being more adamant about the "refuse" part. 🌟

@@emmabloom1793 I don't really follow a recipe - I kind of just wing it lol. I use my food processor to mash up the chickpeas then add sesame oil, olive oil, salt, lemon juice, salt, pepper, garlic, and paprika until I get a consistency I like. I don't have tahini because it's expensive but that helps with a smoother feel and flavor I think.

do you mean the various bio-plastics or compostable plastics? generally speaking any plastic that is just plastic made from organics is still bad for it's long life but an improvement in what it takes to make it. degradable plastic is greenwashing because it it just accelerated breakdown plastic into microplastic (which is bad). biodegradable plastic is a grey area because there is not consistency on what that actually means. compostable and home compostable are the better options where possible because they don't become micro plastics, however if it isn't specififed as 'home compostable' then it requires an industrial composting machine which has specific conditions created to begin the break down process (which is important to consider if your local area does not have any of these specific facilities).

FASHION! LOL I won't be doing the challenge, because honestly the majority of my plastic is the piddle pads one of my cats uses over a litter box. ;) But a side note regarding all those air bubbles you got in the delivery: you can take those to a UPS Store and they will reuse them because people bring stuff and pay for the workers to pack it up FOR them. The more reused bubbles they get, the less new ones they use when they do this.

This format is very playful yet also informative. I was a bit hesitant when I saw the change in the past couple of videos, but now I've grown to appreciate the things you guys do to educate your audience in a fun way. Though I am sad that your new podcasts isn't on YT and, for a while, thought you guys just dropped it since it wasn't what you wanted to do. Aside from that, this has made me become (or at least start to) become more aware about the plastic consumption that is in our day-to-day lives and try to find alternatives around it whenever there's an option available to me.

Here in Mexico, a major chain of Butcher Shops Has made a concerted effort to reduce plastic waste by providing customers with free reusable recycled tote bags with the logo of the store and locations and phone numbers. When your weighed out product arrives at the checkout, it is still in a flimsy bag for cleanliness and safety, but they will grab your purchase with your bag and pop it in and send you out. My friend there tells me they have reduced by half the amount of extra bags they used by doing this. As long as Customers continue bringing back the bags. Also, for my Sister, in LA, the back of her car is filled with the reusable bags, and where ever they go to shop, they bring a few in to use. And Finally, the most clever thing I have seen lately is a rack of the large bags that is color coded and fits in a collapsible frame that fits on the edge of almost all Grocery carts. Looks like a file folder with holders. As the lady shops she puts items in the separate bins in her shopping cart by group. (Canned goods, Cleaning supplies, meats, fruits and Veggies, Other) She gets to check out, they help her lift it out, scan and charge her, then they carefully put it all back into the correct bags. She told us the only issue she has is if there is no one home when she arrives to help her get all her groceries out of the car in one go! Little things we can all do! Thanks and a great video!!!

I live nearby to a field where people seem to just dump their trash into. I had always heard that plastics take forever to biodegrade, but I assure you that some plastics that I've seen there (I go there almost every day) were significantly more more biodegraded than I expected. for example a bottle of motor oil looks to me like it'll biodegrade to tiny plastic bits in less than 10 years or so. I think it's the hard plastics that take so long to biodegrade. the soft ones break down perhaps even faster than wood does.

I'm a Grade 3 teacher in Toronto and I did this with my students last year and they refused to do it because they were so embarrassed! The challenge was only supposed to last for one day and most of the kids were so worried about how their friends would look at them! I made them tape their plastic to their desks instead and luckily it still achieved my goal of bringing their attention to the waste they create individually!

Can you do a post-COVID follow up? A lot of how we use single-use plastics has changed and a lot of places no longer let you bring your own containers when getting coffee, bulk foods, etc. Not to mention the use of disposable face masks. Plastic is definitely needed for medical reasons but it’s become more of an everyday necessity.

I still waste my fair shake of plastic but I've been reusing it for several years now, for example get a bottle/cup of a drink? I try to at least use it a couple times before tossing it and all those packing supplies you get from online orders? Well if you ever sell anything online like an old phone, that stuff costs a fair bit of money which you can save by just storing it for later or using paper.

I think one of the major issues is the small number of recycling plants. Currently Canada sends a lot of its garbage and recycling overseas to places like the Philippines to be disposed of. High efficiency incinerators and recycling plants here in North America would be a huge step in the right direction to solving this problem. Incinerators would also produce energy and the production of the plants would create more jobs.
