Mrs. Voorhies was the original killer. This movie was made without the intention to make a sequel, and was pretty much styled as an "Anyone can be the killer" type movie much like the Scream movies of the 90's were. The movie became a hit and therefore the studio wanted to capitalize with a sequel, and it was a natural progression to make Jason the killer in the sequel. Thus Jason was the killer in most of the following sequels (there was one movie where it wasn't Jason but it was a copycat killer).
Tom Savini set up the jump scare of a lifetime! Out of nowhere Jason makes his grand entrance. People were screaming in the theater!

Fun fact: Tom Savini was also the "body" that fell through the window before it cuts to the dead girl. If you pause it when the body comes through, you can see its a guy and not a girl.

My Pops and I never missed a "monster" movie. This and "Carrie" had the best endings of all time. ("Carrie" was first. And best.) My Pops was a Jiu-jitsu expert. Let me tell you how much fun those surprise endings were for me and whatever poor slob sat in front of us. But after this, I learned Savini's name and learned to look for it in every horror movie hence. Genius.

The reason she was trying to break the lock was because the bullets were in there. That's why she didn't shoot. It wasn't loaded.

Betsy Palmer (who played Jason’s mother) agreed to make this movie only because she needed a new car. She was payed $10,000 and was able to buy a new Volkswagen Sciracco for $9,999. Her reaction to reading the script: “What a piece of sh*t! Nobody is ever going to see this thing!” So of course, she thought it would fly under the radar and nobody would notice. And the rest is history! 😂 She ended up embracing her role decades later and would regularly meet fans at conventions. She was the sweetest lady in the world! RIP Betsy.

Because of Kevin Bacon, I have not slept on my back since the 80s.
The iconic Jason sound came from composer and sound engineer Henry Manfredini. And yes, it was based on Pamela Vorhees being the original killer and her phrase “Kill her mommy!” He said the first syllables into an echo machine: “Kiii kiii maa maa maa….”
She was trying To bust the lock to get the ammo for the rifle. So she was hoping just having the rifle would scare her off since she failed to break the lock.
You guys gotta do Halloween (1978) for sure!
You will have that question answered in Friday the13th Part 2. It’s iconic because we horror fans are introduced to Jason. On Friday the13th Part 3 is where Jason finds his iconic hockey mask. Looking forward to seeing your next reaction. - Gene A.

That end! Holy crap Cam once again you cared the 💩 out of me and I have seen this many times. Yes Pamela was the original killer and she did all the killing in this, This is the best reaction I have ever seen to this movie and I love the realization that Jason in fact didn't start the franchise. Also one villain you can understand why she did what she did. As for the "ki ki ki ma ma ma" thing it was supposed to what Pamela Voorhees was hearing in her head. Great video guys! I'm excited for Halloween reactions now!!
Tell us you haven’t seen “Scream” without telling us you haven’t seen “Scream.” 😉 Very fun reaction, guys!

The sequel House II: The Second Story (1986) is entertaining too....
You have to understand, too that this movie created the blueprint of the 80’s slasher. While Halloween focused on stalking, tension…this was where we got the “setup, kill” trope.
I might be repeating this fact, but I didn't come across it. Though there's a lot more to the story, basically Jason jumping out of the lake was a final jump scare that took it's inspiration from the horror film "CARRIE," that years earlier ended on an iconic jump scare. It was ment to be the final "GOT'CHA!" moment to end the film on. There was never any plans for a sequel. Absolutely NO ONE involved in making the movie thought it would become a summer blockbuster. When the idea of bringing Jason back as the killer, the producer thought it was a terrible idea because Jason was just a figment of the "final girl's" imagination. Clearly, they did it anyway and the rest is history.

Friday the 13th was released two years after Halloween. If you watch Halloween, you'll notice a number of parallels and similarities in Friday the 13th.
Guys need to do sleepaway camp or the burning and idle hands would be great for Halloween coming up
The creators of the original film didn't even consider Jason to be alive, the ending was just a nightmare. But when the movie became a huge success they needed a way to continue the story and someone suggested that what if Jason was still alive. And actually everyone though that was a stupid idea but funny how things turned out and Jason is now the character everyone identifies with the franchise.
25:03 You guys made me laugh while discussing Warm Milk and Hot Chocolate 😂
All through the 80's I was hollering at movie screens "Stop screaming you moron. Shut up and hide and maybe the killer won't find you."😂
He said you got 1 more😂🤣😂 both of your commentary throughout the whole movie had me cracking up, especially when the guy came out with a Native American headdress on. 😂🤣😂😂
Thanks guys this was fun watching with you. I actually saw part 2 first before this one as I was 10 when this came out and when 2 came out being older a bunch of us kids watched that first on new years eve. I could be off but this was still the start of the slasher films, Halloween was first and this one was made to ride Halloween's coattails. I think it was meant to be a one and done film but once the studio saw it made 100 times it's budget they knew they had something. The dragging scenes were meant to relax you to build up the actual suspense of the murders. You are correct, that as a rewatch it is low as you usually laughed at the scary scenes. Keep up the great reviews, helps us old people relive our youthful days.
“WhenScarecrow from The Wizard Of Oz tells you to get out…” y’all are too much 😂😂😂
Most critics DESPISED this film in 1980 when it was released. Popular critic Gene Siskel found this movie to be so deplorable, he published actress Betsy Palmer's (Mrs. Voorhees) address in a major newspaper, encouraging people to send her hate mail for "lowering herself" to be in this awful film (she was a well known, classic actress of stage and screen). None of the mail made it to her, apparently he got the address wrong. Keeping in mind this is decades before the internet, some call this an early example of "doxxing". He did get criticized for this outrageous act, saying he could have given "crazed fans & stalkers" an invite to find her. The claim wasn't too far off. The actress who played the "final girl" was, coincidentally menaced by a deranged stalker. It came to a head when he found her and ended up pointing a gun at her. Fortunately, she was able to talk to him and calm him down. She was able to call the police and he was quickly arrested

LMBO! You guys would've have failed the "Scream" "Ghostface Killer" horror movie knowledge test! LOL.
Horror is how I lost all sense of situational curiosity. What’s that noise? Not my problem, I’ll be on my way!
As someone who's older and grew up loving these films, it's always fascinating to watch people reacting to these film only knowing the now iconic "hockey mask Jason." Even though it's been referenced often (in the opening scene in SCREAM for instance) I love watching how baffled people are when momma Voorhees shows up (to be clear, I get why they're baffled). It's also kinda fun when people watch P.2 and are just as confused that Jason isn't wearing his traidmarke hockey mask. It shows just how iconic these films have become when back in the day they were seen by many critics as being total trash and reprehensible film making.
That creepy whispering motif you hear throughout the movie is Jason’s voice saying “Kill, Mommy,” shortened to “Ki-ki-ki-ma-ma-ma” through an Echoplex machine. Stroke of genius by the composer, Harry Manfredini, making the film iconic with its mounting dread.
You guys need to see "The Mist" it's a great movie, unforgettable actually. 😈
Actress Betsy Palmer HATED her role in "FRIDAY THE 13th" For years she was totally baffled by it's success. In time she would go to horror conventions where people would flock to see "Jason's Mother." Many loved Mrs. Voorhees. Finally, with much respect to her fans, she asked: "why do you admire this awful woman who killed several people." They answered: "because Mrs. Voorhees is misunderstood. She was a loving mother who lost her son who was often picked on or ignored. What she did was wrong, but she did it out of greif and love for her dead child." Not long after, Betsy Palmer embraced the character and eventually defended Mrs. Voorhees from the critics and accepted her largely due to the fans.
12:58 I'm Native American and this made me laugh first time seeing this back in 06' 😂
The reason Mrs. Vorhees was the original killer and Jason came with the sequels is because there were no plans for other movies. Nobody really thought that the original Friday the 13th was going to be the hit that it was at the time. In fact the producer and director, Sean S. Cunningham, was basically ripping off Halloween and a couple other movies in order to make a one-off slasher film which at the time usually didn't make much more than a couple million past their production and distribution costs in terms of profits -- hits like the original Psycho or Halloween aside. When it came out, Friday the 13th became a surprise hit. Not a blockbuster like Jaws, but still did far better than anyone could have imagined.
"I guess this is what people do when there's no cell phones"- I can remember spending an ENTIRE afternoon in my backyard, throwing a tennis ball straight up into the air as high as possible, and then trying to catch it without letting it hit the ground. I'm talking HOURS of this; I was probably about 8 years old or so. Kept it up until I had to go inside to set the table. That was a fun afternoon. We all were a lot easier to entertain in the "1900's" (the first time I heard a younger person call them that I nearly died).
Always feel sorry for the snake, the handler thought they were getting it back as it was supposed to be left unharmed not cut in half.

It was enjoyable watching you both throughout the movie talking about Jason being the killer 😄 And yea: the number of red flags ignored was ridiculous.

Cam, I replay your scream from the last scene like 20 times it was so funny🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣. ❤
Critics HATED these movies when they were released in the 80's. Famed film critic Roger Ebert was so offended and appalled by FRIDAY THE 13TH, he found the phone numbers of the people who made the movie along with actress Betsy Palmer (Mrs. Voorhees) and added them in print with his scathing review. He encouraged people (with the same opinions about this movie) to call them up and express how disgusted they were with this "filth," and they should be ashamed of themselves for making something so horrendous. Looking back on this, some say this is one of the earliest examples of "doxing." * the reason he chose to print only Mrs. Palmer's number from the rest of the cast is because she was a responsible actress of both film and the stage. He was more forgiving of the younger cast members as they were just trying to start their careers, but Betsy Palmer should have know better and has no good excuse to be in such a reprehensible movie.
Get ready guys, this upcoming Friday is "Friday the 13th".
omg, I almost had a heart attack on that last jump scare 🫣
I actually met Ari Lehman, the guy who played young Jason in this!
That final jump scare always gets people. That's how you do a real jump scare right. Nobody saw it coming.
Dying laughing when Kevin Bacon got it...Cam is like "OH OH OH!!" LMAO

Final comments : love your viewpoints. Highly recommend watching the others (some are better than others), but as one of the original slasher series.. They could have been worse. Recommend you check out the documentary on the making of this. The behind the scenes stuff, especially the time frame and budget, will impress you. Remember... Late 70s/80s were practical movies.. It's impressive what they did with what they had to work with.
A funny camp movie from around the same time is Meatballs with Bill Murray.
This movie was meant to be a carbon copy quick cash in on the movie Halloween by Paramount. BUT it ended up being a lore of its own. Even the history of the hockey mask (as you’ll see) is a lore of its own.
*Definitely* watch the rest of the series (or at least to maybe Part 6, I'd say after Part 4 - in my personal opinion - it starts going downhill, but opinions vary). As far as Kevin Bacon's career at that point, I think he'd done some soap opera work before this but he was still basically an unknown. He'd have been 22 here. I was 8 years old when Friday the 13th came out, and while Halloween birthed the specific sub-genre they share (more or less), F13 managed to step up and OWN it (in no small part through steady movie releases (the first 9 movies were released over the span of 13 years).
Cam: "Oh, no. Voorhees is the last name of Jason." It's fun seeing that connection made during the reaction. I'm late to this reaction but I had to chime in. It must be wild to see this film with the expectation of a big mute maniac in a hockey mask appearing, and then not to see that figure at all. I grew up watching the VHS tapes of this franchise, in order of their release. We saw the evolution of the character without having known Jason from pop culture. The origin of F13 is so funny because producer/director Sean Cunningham wanted to "borrow" elements from Carpenter's Halloween movie from '78 due to its success, so he chose a day of the year, had a logo design made and put in the papers like Variety, and got financing that way ... without even having a complete screenplay ready. Now, the movie makes me peeved and it's because of the script and the character of Mrs. Voorhees, Pamela. As far as I know, and correct me if I'm wrong, she is not seen as a character in the film until our Final Girl (Alice) meets her in the last part of the story. Pamela just shows up and we soon begin to realize that _she_ was the killer the whole time, and this creates a very frustrating feeling, almost like we were watching some kind of whodunit type story but the writer just quickly threw in the mother (who is out to avenge the accidental death of her little boy back in 1958). They should have made Mrs. V a minor character, like a diner waitress or a general store owner, somewhere in the *beginning* of F13 ... there would have been a mental payoff for the audience then--- much better than us thinking "Who *is* this character I haven't seen until this very minute??". Maybe this is not a big problem for most fans of the franchise, I'm not sure. I'm not a huge slasher aficionado, I really like the original Black Christmas from 1974 and the first two Halloween films and the original Nightmare on Elm Street and the 1992 Candyman movie. I've found that most other slashers are fairly lame and not really worthwhile. There are a few rare exceptions, but overall they seemed designed only to get young couples spooked at the local theater or drive-in so that cuddling (or more) ensues, LOL. Basically just made to get people to buy movie tickets on a Friday night. Part of me wishes Mrs. V had become the villain of this series, appearing in ever movie; of course she wouldn't have been decapped in this one ... maybe. That would've been interesting. So many slashers feature a man as the killer. But as the old saying goes, "If _ifs_ and _buts_ were candy and nuts, we'd all have a Merry Christmas". :D The jump scare in the climax is good stuff. Your facial expressions prove that. Although, have to say: does Jason the lake mongoloid actually look the age he should be in 1980? :D Oh, it's too easy to pick at this flick. Anyway, the producers and writer wanted something big at the end of F13, something memorable like the ending of a 1976 movie that I won't mention because you guys may not have reacted to it yet. Also, the score by Harry Manfredini is fun, very reminiscent of the 1960 thriller Psycho at times with the frenetic strings screeching at us. And the whole vocal effect of "Kee kee kee, ma ma ma", based on Pamela's dialogue of "Kill her Mommy .... kill her", is iconic.
This movie was a surprise hit. That's why it doesn't have coherent lore behind it. It has elements of Psycho in it, except the mom and not the son is the killer. It was not created to be a franchise. That just happened after the first one turned out to be a big hit. By the way, I think the first four are excellent. Starting with the fifth one, the quality goes down. There was a backlash in the '80s against gory and hyperviolent movies and the fourth one was the last one made before they toned everything down. I do like Freddy vs Jason, but that's just because i think it does a good job of delivering on that gimmick concept.
I really enjoyed your videos
Kevin Bacon would have been 22 in 1980, he is 65 now. His first movie role was in Animal House, in 1978 which is about a fraternity and is hilarious. He started getting noticed in 1982 with his role in Diner, then Footloose in 1984 made him a huge star. When you guys finish this genre , I would suggest the Scarey Movies series, which are parodies of these slasher films and are hilarious.

And it grossed about 50 million or a bit more in box office with a budget of 500K….. crazy how these movies get immortalized
Kevin Bacon made his movie debut in the blockbuster, "ANIMAL HOUSE." However his role wasn't really a major one. He had bit parts in a few films until "FRIDAY THE 13th." Even in their wildest dreams, NO ONE working on that film expected it to become a runaway smash hit! However, it's success helped him get more roles. In 1982 he co-starred in "DINER," another small film that over performed. It wasn't until 1984, when he managed to get the lead role in "FOOTLOOSE," a B.O. smash, that he finally became an "A-LIST superstar."
On a lighter note, I grew up in the eighties and one of my favorite movies was problem child, by you guys sense of humor I know without a doubt you’re gonna love it. 🥰🥰🥰❤️❤️❤️👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
hello cam and Zay, just watched your reaction i want to thank you both for reacting to these classics, you don't see films like these anymore a lot of horror theses days are done mostly by computer and green screen with very little organic effects. I do have a recommendation for you guys the film is the 1988 " Night of the Demons" it has two famous actresses one is a scream queen legend the other is the Niece of of the actress who played Blanche from Golden girls. I also want to mention this film had a very long popularity after it was made. it was an iconic poster that was put up every Halloween season at several video stores The slogan thats included in one of trailers and the poster was " Angela's throwing a Halloween party, your'e invited but Freddy and Jason were too scared to come. I had to recommend this film. It made horror history for a while because it introduced a female killer into the all male killer horror group, and it had two sequels and in 2009 I believe it was the year a remake. However, the remake can't compare to the brilliance of the original. I strongly recommend the 1988 NIght of the Demons.
Watched this at the drive-in with the family and when they showed the serene lake, people were starting their cars to leave and when he jumped out the whole car shook because my step dad freaked out lol.
Don't forget the new exorcist will be out next month and I will watch 2 and 3 with you. Great reaction. Love it
There's power in numbers Zay.. Spooky 👻 👻
I saw this at the theater when I was 10 and it scared me so much. I was terrified of windows for years to come (because of the bodies being thrown threw the windows int he movie). The worst thing ever was -- I went to get popcorn and I totally MISSED the sex scene!
I know director Sean S Cunningham and writer Victor Miller intended for this to be a rip off of Halloween, but this one had its murder mystery charm, since we don’t know who the killer is. It Kind of plays like an Agatha Cristie mystery. I also love the cinematography and atmosphere:) I love how Ned is always like a third wheel. Like that scene where he’s watching Kevin Bacon and his girl frolicking along the lake, and he kind shakes his head like that Kevin Bacon gets all the girls. It’s subtle, but effective:)
