    "Horse Racing" is a Grade 3 piece under the erhu test, somehow like Fur Elise for piano. Therefore it's not a beginner piece at all. For a normal student, it would take about three months after he begins to learn erhu to get to the level of a complete "Horse Racing".

    I have been playing the erhu for 6 years now and I'm amazed these two actually managed to: 1. Make a sound on D major 2. Miraculously play F major in less than an hour 3. SHIFT WITH AMAZING PRECISION 4. Tremolo and trail 5. Sort of make the neighing sound (in Eddie's case, a dying horse's last breath) 6. Play Horse Racing (Sai Ma) when I haven't even learnt the whole thing yet. Mad respect to these guys.

    @Lu Cheng Well to a certain degree. Obviously the skills are widely different. But you have already figured out how to learn. You have built good practice habits that can also help you with a new instrument. And your ears are already trained. You have a feeling for things like pitch and rythm. That can transfer to any instrument.

    I played er-hu when I was 9 years old till 12 (2008 - 2011) for my pre-school chinese orchestra club. We were ranked from beginner, intermediate, advance and to the performing class. I got into the performing class after a year and a half of playing when I passed the test set by my instructors (thanks to vibrato, didn't know that term back then, it was self taught by looking at my instructor playing the er-hu, got no internet). I performed alongside with a team consisting around 15 members in multiple schools, it felt great to be on stage and introducing classical chinese instruments to different people. Biggest regret of my life was not practicing for 40hrs a day, it costs me an opportunity to perform alongside with the top performing 8 members at Beijing National Stadium (a small nearby stage, not at the actual stadium). A few tears were shed during the member announcing day and realizing I wasn't picked. I continued playing er-hu for my school until I graduated but my family wasn't as wealthy as the others we couldn't afford a personal er-hu after I graduated and never touched it since. Long story short, keep on practicing. Don't give up on something you're passionate about be it a hobby or an instrument

  • @jashea7610

    Eldoral Suli however,our bow technique is completely different from violin’s,and our range is smaller due to having only 2 strings.if you want to read our sheet music,you probably have to start from scratch cuz we have a completely different sheet music,using numbers instead of notes like crotchet or quavers.also,if one is trying to actually learn the basics of Erhu,you have to take note of wrist movement,arm movement,hand position,bow position as all these are completely different from the violin.so yea as someone who plays Erhu,they’re doing a great job considering it’s 1 hour but please do not try to downgrade how difficult it actually is.

    Hm just a tip for both of yall: your bowing arm was too tense! brett your shoulder kept moving back and your elbow never extended- that's wrong, your arm should be fluid while playing, and that actually contributes to the sound being better,,,, eddy your bow was flying off the sound box a lot- heheheh it's meant to stick to it :) i hope yall learn the erhu okay it's a great instrument

  • @xin1248

    @xin1248

    3 жыл бұрын

    ^ in addition to that (i know i’m late), wrists were too tense / tight. they’re supposed to be fluid: when you’re playing a 拉弓 (essentially pulling), your wrist extends out which they did, but when you’re playing a 推弓 (essentially pushing), your wrist has to go in, like bend inwards, you have to push it in the opposite way! would be best if the bow was kept straight, and posture is important: try to lessen hunchbacking though i understand they want to check their fingering and notes. another point is the left hand (fingering) should be less tight, from what i saw they were gripping too tightly which makes it difficult to 换把 (changing positioning of hands). i didn’t pay much attention to them specifically but that’s what i picked up on so far :) they both did rly well for their first try (erhu is rly hard to learn) and i’m actly rly impressed w how quickly they managed to memorise a grade3 piece. kudos to brett as well for picking up how to play a somewhat solid sound so quickly (took me 15min, which is actly rly long if u think abt it). additional note: don’t fret if you didn’t get the neighing sound right, i’ve been playing for 8 years and got distinction for grade8 but i sometimes still mess up that part. this was a great video + sorry for the lengthy comment i’m js rly excited to see my instrument featured ! gonna check out the guzheng video to see if 5 years of playing the guzheng did anything oops
