Dolores does know everything. But you notice, she only gossips IF the person involved knows she knows. I think it's a self-protection method so people don't think about her the way they did Bruno. Every time she overhears something and they know she knows, she gossips. The other 90% of secrets she also knows, but doesn't gossip about. Hiding in plain sight. ETA: Or if the matriarch asks. She tells Abeula if she asks, and Mirabel as the next matriarch when it seems important (hinting at Luisa and Bruno to assist her.)

Isabela is definitely an ass, but it’s such an accurate portrayal of that deep-seated resentment that can be fostered in these family situations where pressure is put on the older siblings. In these cases, they’re usually not consciously thinking “They put pressure on me, and not on you, so it’s your fault!” but it’s just this sense of annoyance that springs up as a subconscious reminder. And maybe one day when everyone’s out of there and living their own lives they can think, “Oh shit, is that why my younger sibling made me so angry all the time? Because I resented the position I was put in that they weren’t?”

I like the thought that Casita manipulates the rooms depending on the owner's mental state. So as Bruno became more and more nervous about doing visions, the more and more inaccessible his room became. So that the person asking for the reading would have to really REALLY want to know the future.

  • @Umbramus

Actually I think I remember reading that outside of making them, Casita can't do anything with their rooms (I also think it told Mirabel that when she asked it to turn off the sand at Bruno's door) and that any changes that happen, like Bruno's room getting increasingly harder to access, is something that happened on its own!

I identify a lot with Isabela so I wanted to chime in. I did not appreciate my younger sister as much as I should have growing up because our parents put me on a pedestal as the golden child and I felt an immense amount of pressure to live up to that expectation since the rest of our extended family also constantly praised me. My sister would do things to get attention that I would never consider “being able” to do because it wasn’t “acceptable” and I would lose that status as “perfect”. If you’ve ever seen The Good Place it’s like Kamilah and Tahani, too lol I’m 33 now and my sister is 29; we are much closer as adults after realizing the schism we created between ourselves and that our parents probably inadvertently created between us. Yes Isabela is/was a jerk but if you want someone to grow you have to be love them and give them grace to grow (also remembering that sometimes it takes time to develop better social habits). Great reactions as always, guys!

Want to add something as the younger sister with a golden child older sister. We’re 2 years apart, me 25 now. Growing up we were compared a lot by parents and people around us and she basically was the golden child; really good grades, slim (Asian beauty standards lol) and pretty. Our relationship was a bit strained when we were young (like before 12) but it wasn’t that bad and I never hated my sister for being better. Instead it was the opposite. I idolised and loved my sister and still do! What really made a difference is that our parents recognised that we had different abilities and realised they shouldn’t expect me to be able to achieve my sister’s achievements in her way and also to treat us the same when it came to punishment and rewards. When we were younger, if we were fighting, we would both be punished and if my sister did well on a test or anything we would both be rewarded lol My point is that parents play a very big role in siblings’ dynamics which sounds like obviously duh but a lot of people forget that. The right environment encourages a better bond and the opposite encourages contest and disputes.

I married a man from Colombia, it has a long and bloody history of war and ravage, going back hundreds of years. This particular time in the movie’s historical context was bad, there was a civil war going on, and people would go through villages and just raze them to the ground due to political unrest. There were many refugees, and many deaths. My husband’s own family fled in 2001, when his neighbors started to disappear under suspicious circumstances. He remembers the guerrilla fighters walking down his road, and stopping at his house to ask for food. They had big guns slung on their backs, but were otherwise friendly to them, thank God. But this was during the FARC years, so his family chose to flee to the states. His mother was born here, so her kids had a right to citizenship, which was very fortunate, as immigration is a long and expensive process, otherwise.

I grew up as the eldest and only daughter, so I was the golden child. I can definitely sympathise a lot with Isabela. I resented my brothers and cousins because they got away with things I could never dream of doing, meanwhile they were jealous of me because I seemed to get more respect from the adults. This respect always came with invisible strings attached, but they couldn't understand that. Isabela definitely feels jealous of Mirabel, just as much as Mirabel is jealous of her. They're two sides of the same coin. One wants to step up and have a role and responsibility, but is always brushed off. The other is forced into a position of responsibility, and craves freedom. That is why mending the broken family bond had to start with these two connecting.

Abuela never asked Isabela to do anything more with her abilities. She was expected to basically be a princess more or less. Isabela's song shows her willingness to step out of the role she's been put into and try something for herself. Her resentment and anger at her younger sibling is due to her seeing Mirabel as having the freedom to express herself whereas she did not. This can be very common in families. My younger brother and I fought A LOT (like fistfights) when we were younger, but as we grew older, we actually speak to each other. In fact my brother is more comfortable speaking to me than our other two older sisters.

I actually liked Isabella. Whatever she dished out, Mirabel dished back. Mirabel was just as brash and rude to her as she was the Mirabel, but the difference is that we see things through Mirabel's perspective, so we see Isabella as entitled rather than just how trapped she truely feels. I like that she's a female character who doesn't have to be sweet 100%. She's bratty to her kid sister. That's a sibling.

I always ascribed to the theory that the head of the family in Encanto influences the powers of the family. The grandmother was worried about the future and wanted stability and healing. So her kids all had gifts to that degree. Then the grandkids got the power to shoulder the family burdens, follow in grandmas footsteps as a perfect copy of her, able to change to fit any need, know about the information and plans of the town- and finally Mirabelle. I believe she is meant to be the Grandmother's replacement as the head of the family, but the door couldnt maifest because the grandma still had her door. After all Mirabelle was the one that gifted an animal toy to her nephew and an exact copy of that animal appeared to him when called (and its the first power that was based on his interests and not something the family would need to function). This is further backed up because Casita grants her the front door of the newly made house- because it is HER house now.

I am glad there were a few characters that did not treat Mirabel like crap. Her parents did their best to stand up for her. Louisa showed she was nervous about what was going on, but she never blamed Mirabel for it. Even when she spoke to Abuela, all she said was, “I talked to Mirabel”, but never accused her of anything. Antonio just loved her so much and wanted her support. Bruno ran away to protect Mirabel. It is just a shame that we had to focus on the haters throughout the whole movie because it made it seem everyone hated her.

Personally, I would say Isabella's "arc" is missing pieces. The way she treats Mirabel is, at best, a learned behavior and, at worst, a trained behavior. Assuming that Abuela's treatment of Mirabel started right after Bruno left, when she would have been, maybe 8 years old, Isabella was maybe 12? I imagine that as her older sister, Isabella would have wanted to defend her at first, but was either discouraged from doing so by Abuela or just talked over until she learned not to bother. Over ten years, she becomes just as bad as her grandmother, if not blatantly worse. I think it's fine on its own, though it needs a lot of inferencing. But pieces on how it developed, or how they got along as kids would have helped a lot.

Maybe it’s because the story is told from Mirabel’s perspective or there may be social context missing, but the resentment between Isabela and Mirabel felt pretty mutual imo. I had a similar thing going on with my sister, even though I was in the position of the younger sister. Notice in the scenes before Isabela even has anything to say to her sister, Mirabel is rolling her eyes and huffing. My sister described remembering how much I would glare at her for just being in my vicinity, which would turn into arguments because of how my aunts compared us. I look back and feel a little ashamed at my part in our strained relationship, the small things I would do or say while minimizing her feelings because in my head I was already below her, “she has it better then me”. To Mirabel, she’s the perfect princess but that’s only because that’s all Isabelas been told she’s good for. You brought up a good point on Luisa and Isabela being opposites. Luisa is only valued for her utility, while Isabela is purely aesthetic idolization, a lot of women with trauma will project onto their daughters and have them live the life they wanted. A young girl that raises the family’s social standing by just sitting still and gracious, being pretty, marrying young and baring children. Isabela was not aware of what her own powers can do because the people who should have been encouraging her were more obsessed with the concept she represented then her as a person with feelings. No one even thought to ask her how she felt about being married. It was a good touch having her take offense to Mirabel calling her selfish despite how uppity she’s portrayed, to contrast how she views herself. Shes been convinced that giving up her own free will, just to make her family (really just her grandmother) proud is a noble thing, and not vapid or concerning. I was especially happy that Isabella’s song was about self exploration. My sister went into pharmacy for college but had a really rough time, and after a long and teary conversation with my parents she was finally able to pursue what she really wanted which was cosmetic science. Our relationship is much better now. Which is why I can’t help but empathize with Isabella. I do agree that it almost feels like there’s some pieces missing to justify the way it was built up in the movie though.

Mirabel insults Isabella in the opening song, and their constant bickering means it’s mutual. It’s made clear that both of them want each other’s life as Mirabel is jealous that Isabella is so perfect, while Isabella just wanted to be herself but had her life planned out for her by Alma because she was the “golden child”. (When Dolores says “He wants 5 babies”, Isa’s hair grows multiple pink flowers and one white flower which Alma plucks out, while Isa has to change her shocked face back to pretending to be interested)

Honestly, when it comes to Turning Red, it really hit home for me and it made me think about the supression of identity. Growing up in an asian household, the women/girls are taught to be "proper", the idea of being loud, boisterious and sporty wasn't considered at all lady-like and was hammered home hard. So considering the meaning of this film, to me, it's more than just puberty and periods, I mean look at all the women in Mei's family, they all still had their pandas, it never really went away, they just supressed it- and it shows in their colour pallets also, the green they all wear is the opposite colour to red- connoting to the divide they desperately want from their true nature, they all still have them, they just don't want to express it, or don't know how to without feeling the generational shame. It's also a big choice they let Meimei have at the end - it's her choice. We don't have a choice with going through puberty but we do with how we conduct ourselves, how we choose to express ourselves, and I think that's why this movie is so good! It paints the bigger picture of who are you really, and do you want to show that to the world or hide it?

Obviously, Ming has a LOT more emotional suppression, including anger because she never got to express herself or otherwise have much of an outlet for it.

The thing I always gathered after watching Encanto was that after Bruno left they all stopped talking about him more to make Abuela happy. His visions were all seen as negative, mostly because no one in the town really seems to know how to deal with bad things. But you can see when he comes back the reaction of his sisters is "OMG he's back!" and the huge hug. They were triplets, so you can imagine there were times that they were the only ones each other had.

When I watched Encanto I immediately knew that one of the major points of the movie was the representation of generational trauma. I knew this because I myself suffer from this. I’m only second generation to be free from the residential schools in Canada. My grandmother on my dad’s side was fairly similar to Abuela. A little less social lol 😂 but definitely stoic and didn’t talk about the traumas of the past.

It's so interesting to think about the fact that Camilo portrays Bruno as evil because he's the same age as Mirabel so he shouldn't have too many memories of Bruno either. So his impression of Bruno has to be based completely on what he's been told by the community and what he assumes based on the way the family - especially his own mother - reacts whenever Bruno is brought up. It's such a case of hearing something and it spiraling out of control. Especially once you see what Bruno is actually like. On a lighter note, I love that while Dolores is singing about hearing Bruno, you can see him dancing in the background. Makes me laugh every time.

So, u wanted Isabela to get vulnerable and stuffs like Luisa during her confession about having pressure in order for u to understand her? Isabela's just stronger. Luisa was pressured but was in the dark, can let her feelings out more, while Isabela was pressured and always in the spotlight, just like Mirabel said, "It seems like ur lifes been a dream SINCE THE MOMENT U OPENED UR EYES," living 22 years in a hazy dream, like she hasnt even been BORN yet, even her sister didnt know that. Everyones forced to be perfect but shes "THE PICTURE" perfect for the whole family. Being the first grandchild and looks like Abuela, Abuela really just wanted to make her the WHAT IF (things were perfect) version of herself and even forced her to marry a man she doesnt love. And look at her, she got angry at Mirabel for literally SAVING HER. Its like someone whos been mentally hurt and abused so much that they just THINK THATS THE RIGHT THING and go against someone who tried to help them. And its not like Mirabel had no negative feelings to Isabela. She eye-rolled, didnt see Isa's pressure and the sarrows she was going through since FOREVER. And back to the first thing i said, shes not as vulnerable as others, so wut? Shes WRONG? And u think its enough or not, in the end, the 2 sis had issues with each other and now BOTH, BOTH sides are made up, then its all fine, its THEIR problem, its THEIR resolution, not ours.

I personally think Isabellas' arc was done really well - if you see things a bit differently. Isabella doesn't 'wrongly' blame Mirabel, at least not in her pov. She wasn't just mean, because she just was. Isabella had to be pretty at every. single. moment. of her life. And when Mirabel came and - for example - bumped into her it was her fault, she couldn't be pretty. From her point of view Mirabel was the reason she couldn't be perfect anymore. Also it's not just a 'get over yourself' moment. She was 'tied' down, forced to marry someone, spend her ENTIRE life with someone, and even have kids with them, to be that perfect image her family wants from her. Maybe she was even jealous of Mirabel, because Mirabel had her parents defending her. How many times have you seen anyone really be with Isabella and help her or defend her the whole movie? The moment she makes that cactus it's not just a 'I made something different'-moment, it was a 'I did something I never knew I coul/was allowed to do'-moment. She was never allowed to have a tiny slip up. (Same with Peppa, who is forced to always be happy - but since she can't control her emotions, she tries to surpress them, ending in her having anxiety etc.) Also, a thing I think is somewhat overappreciated is an apology, at least a 'I'm sorry' because that can be very dishonest. And Isabella shows through her actions, through her song even, how she grows more and more fond of Mirabel, making her realize that Mirabel just helped her - which she probably never saw - and isn't 'that bad' it's even shown in the coloursceme of her outfit. at first she is seeing wearing mainly like pink-ish tones, very soft, aesthetically pleasing colours etc, but at the end of her song, she has bright, wild colours, probably showing her real side more and it's even shown in the song, using her voice! Throughtout the beginning of the song, her voice is light, airy and ssoft - princess like. But at the end she belts out an entire note, loud and upbeat and happy - not soft and quiet. All those things to me really just meant that there is a character arc going on, and it's legit. Not missing some parts, like others think. (This is not meant to be offending btw! I just thought I could give my opinion, so that others can agree/disagree!)

You guys already have so much respect for Stephanie Beatriz, but allow me to add some more love to the pile: When she recorded "Waiting For a Miracle," she was 9 months pregnant. The morning she was scheduled to go record the song, her contractions started but she didn't tell anyone because she didn't want them to freak out. So she recorded the whole song while actively in labor. Less than 48 hours later, her daughter was born! Stephanie really WAS waiting for a miracle, which was her baby girl. (And I imagine that "keeping down the unspoken, invisible pain" was her trying to hide her contractions from her coworkers lol)

35:51 Bruno said "it looks like rain," on her wedding day as a joke on her weather powers, AND as a blessing on her marriage. Rain on your wedding day is considered good luck for your marriage because if you tie a knot (euphemism for getting married, and sometimes a literal part of the ceremony) and the knot gets wet, it becomes extremely difficult to untie. A rainy wedding day means your marriage will last a really long time. And I guess the hurricane on their wedding day WAS good luck because Felix and Pepa are very happily married and clearly love each other a LOT. Good for them! (And sorry, Bruno!)

I think the reason why Mirabel wasn't given a gift is because Abuela doesn't need anymore power to run the family and the village. She said during her confrontation with Mirabel that when he asked Pedro for help, he sent Mirabel. Meaning, Pedro was the one sending her children and grandchildren powers to help with her. At the point of Mirabel's turn, Abuela already had the help she will ever need. This also explains why Antonio got his powers, to help ease Abuela's worries from Mirabel's gifting ceremony. It was all a metaphor for how much single parents need help in raising their family and being part of the society. Or idk I might be reaching.

"Seeing" is a big theme in Encanto. Mirabel's nickname is "Mira," which means "Look (at this)" in Spanish. She wears glasses, which have green frames and are (duh) made from glass. The color green aligns her with the family's other "odd duck," aka Bruno, who's the only one whose outfit is all green. Mirabel's family wears blue while Dolores' family wears yellow; Bruno never married or had kids so he doesn't have a family unit to share his "color" with. So he visually looks like a misfit. (Plus the misdirection of Disney's villain always being associated with green, even though he's not an antagonist.) Bruno has visions, which manifest in glass plates/slabs so he can show people what his mind saw in the visions. The movie's first line of dialogue is Abuela saying "Abre los ojos; Open your eyes." Mirabel sings "Open your eyes, open your eyes, open your eyes!" during "Waiting for a Miracle." The final musical number is the family all acknowledging that they "see" Mirabel's efforts and her worth in the family, when she finally gets her door (to the whole house, because she's the future matriarch.)

I’m not going to deny that Isabella’s arc is rushed and undercooked but I’ve never seen anyone interpret what happened in “What Else Can I do” so poorly and with so much bad faith. Isabella is realizing how cooped up she’s been and she’s realizing her strength and she’s THANKING Mirabel for it. Maybe she could have apologized after the song. She probably should have, but she’s not saying “Oh your useful to me now” she’s realizing now that Mirabel was always important to her. And Isabella’s problem isn’t just that she has to be perfect, she has to be perfect 24/7. It’s mentally draining to do something like that. She’s jealous of Mirabel because Mirabel doesn’t have to keep up appearances. They want what the other has. Her problems may not be as physically taxing or as obvious as Luisa’s but they’re none the less real and damaging.

Hey guys, Colombian here. Great commentary first o all ! In Colombia we suffered a period of time called “la violencia” or the violence which you can track its roots back to colonial and independence times and that reached a high point during the beginning of the 20th century because of the war between liberals and conservatives in rural Colombia. The way abuelo Pedro was lost is not based on a single story but rather it’s the same story that we have sadly seen and experienced too many times in the last 100 years; the war phenomena of forced displacement which still takes place in our country despite a halfway successful peace process that started back in 2016 and an improvement in overall security since the presidency of Alvaro Uribe back in 2002, that improvement in security did come at the cost of the lives of many innocent young men and these crimes are still pending to receive any sort of justice. In general, Disney did a really good job portraying the Colombian experience in every way. When this movie came out you could see people sobbing in the theaters watching abuelo Pedro’s montage, there’s still so much healing needed in our society, and I’m hopeful we will eventually get there ❤️‍🩹

49:12 While Mirabel DID end up hugging Isabela, there's another reason why the vision shows this happening. Isabela bears a strong resemblance to Abuela Alma when she was younger. And if you look at Mariano, he looks a lot like Abuelo Pedro did before he was killed. I think that's why Abuela put Isabela on a pedestal and why she wanted her to marry Mariano so badly: Pedro was killed and Alma's happy life was taken away from her; Now that she has Isabela as a granddaughter, she's living vicariously through her and wants her to have the "perfect" life that Alma didn't get to have. Mirabel didn't just have to patch things over with Isabela, but also with Alma for taking out her grief on her kids and on her grandkids by trying to make them all behave perfectly as her coping mechanism to having her husband and life taken away from her.

Dolores heard Luisa's eye twitching all night but didn't hear Abuela admit what Mirabel saw was real allowing an open discussion about the problems the family is facing. Either her ability is greatly embellished, or she keeps important information to herself unless it directly screws over Mirabel (I mean forwards the plot).

1:00:55 I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but yes; I confirm that in Colombia where "Encanto" takes place, there was a lot of violence and war on the indigenous people, who are represented by characters like Alma and Pedro; You'd be heartbroken to find out how many of them did flee their homes to try to escape the genocide and were STILL killed because they were caught. Pedro's sacrifice captures a very real aspect of the pain many native Colombianos went through back then. The conflict in the movie is most likely the Thousand Days War - a Colombian civil war between the liberals and conservatives which occurred from 1899 to 1902. Which lines up with the triplets' age (they're 50) and the movie takes place in the early 1950's. And based on the fact that the bandit in front had a machete and the camera zoomed in on it, I can only imagine that they beheaded Pedro, which is INDEED a horrific way to see someone die right in front of you.

1:49:52 It might seem weird to people who are unfamiliar with it, but relatives talking about your weight is very common in Asian households (and according to my lived experience, lots of Latino cultures as well. My Abuela mentions my mom's weight and my weight every time we fly in to visit our family.) It *might* lead to some unintended issues or complexes, but most aunties and grandmas who do it mean well when they talk about whether you've lost or gained weight.
