We Visit Retired Cambodian Elephants! Kulen Elephant Forrest

#cambodia #siemreap #elephant #elephantrescue #elephantsanctuary
G'day - in this video we take a trip out to the Koulen Elephant Forrest about 1 hour from Siem Reap.
The elephants previously took tourists around the Angkor/Apsara national park. As times change and this type of tourism is no longer with us the elephants needed a place to retire. The folks at the Elephant Forrest do an amazing job keeping these creatures happy and healthy in their twilight years. Worth a trip out if you like this sort of thing.
I'm Marc - and these are my mildly interesting adventures, mostly through Cambodia and South East Asia.

Howdy folks - like always we hope you enjoy this video! It was a nice trip out to the Koulen Elephant Sanctuary - if you are in town and want to head out there these days it's $80 for a full half day experience with the elephants. Our little visit was just enough when travelling with a little bloke (he isn't so little any more...) Appov's birthday vlog kzread.info/dash/bejne/jGxnspaLp6-0ZNI.html - We snuck through the jungle to get her a cake! Book your tour here www.kulenforest.asia/

G'day Maddo! Agree mate - they looked pretty chuffed to be fed and roam around the beautiful surrounds! Elephant rides in asia have been around for yonks but over time people are wising up that its not flash to do it. I know what you are talking about with those tigers too - must be a pretty ordinary existence for them. Hope you are staying warm mate!

It's a ripper of a spot - highly recommend heading out there (if you want to go, we will hook you up with Apov)!! You will enjoy the experience and you never know Claire you might be able to give them a few pointers from your experience working in NGOs!

G'day Paul - ah no!!! did you make it there eventually? I don't know how reliable google maps is in Cambodia. So many times we have looked on a map and seen we are at a coffee shop/hotel or market - but are in the middle of nowhere! Not sure if people understand the importance of tagging their business in the right spot!!

@@MarcsMildlyInteresting yeah we got there, a few strange looks from the locals and a creek crossing or two later. Google maps is primitive there, I have added a few family members businesses to it for barangs to find them

G'day JJ! Ah nice so you went out there? What was your highlight? Yeah I think it's up to $80 now actually - I think like a lot of places they were doing introductory prices when it was quiet. Would have been bloody tough for places like this to survive with minimal visitors way back when. Cheers mate!

By Cambodian prices - FOR MOST EVERYTHING ELSE - $80 is a fortune ! - - - Not at all affordable for most Kemer people.

It is Frank - but then again most things in Cambodia directed at tourists are very expensive. Even a modest $5 meal that we see as being cheap might be a days takings for a local working in a small business.

@@MarcsMildlyInteresting Thanks for responding. -- My interest lies in retirement - namely Siem Reap where the cost of living is very low - and - many expats (about 20K) are living already - drinking 50 cent beer & eating $1 - $2.50 street food meals ! ( ? ) Some aren't paying $80/mo. rent ! -- Many who 'live there' do so fairly well on about $700 - $800 /mo. -- Well under $1000/mo. most months - but - those aren't the tourists. Retirement visas if your over 55 are amazing. ❤ 🙏

@@frankkluz9787 No worries Frank! Yep agree that you can definitely stretch your retirement $$s in Siem Reap! There seems to be accommodation to suit all budgets (from super lavish right down to cheap and cheerful). Plenty of amenities and amazing food + those cheap cold beers you talk about too! Have you been there before? Considered any other locations? Cheers and thanks for watching - hope you find our videos somewhat useful!

@@MarcsMildlyInteresting -- Certainly enjoyed your travels in a part of the world I'm not familiar with. -- Budget friendly areas especially appeal to my somewhat naturally frugal self. -- Haven't been to Siem Reap yet. Will need to go and see if I can tolerate the extreme heat and subsequent discomfort there. (?) -- If not - it will be the comforts of Tagaytay City - a bit more than an hour S of Manila and much cooler. Another gem of a city - very scenic and a perfect retirement place. Cost of living near there can be had for up to 70% below the US average - whereas in the US - 20% below average is rare anymore if desirable is considered. --- All the best with your journeys ! Cheers.
