We've planted 120,000 trees on a Romanian mountain - here's why

This is one of our oldest projects and one that makes us all really proud. I can't think of any place in Europe that is wilder than the amazing Southern Carpathian Mountains which makes restoring them a privilege.

🔎 ABOUT THIS PROJECT
===============================
Romania's Carpathian Mountains are home to some of Europe’s last remaining truly wild forests and the largest population of bears, wolves and lynx. Sadly, this ecosystem hangs in the balance due to years of illegal logging. Our goal is to restore the barren clear cuts that threaten these forests. In partnership with Foundation Conservation Carpathia we are working to restore clear cuts in the Romania's Southern Carpathian Mountains.

    so that the same companies can make more profit from illegally cutting in the same area in 20years? Lets be honest, you guys need to get your politics under control. I know they're corrupt, but they can also be toppled. Ceausescus regime was as well and you got rid of him. Mossy Earth can't save your country, and 120'000 trees wont do much. Logging your own forests can provide your own people with jobs and boost your own countries exports. Coupling that with a reforestation-law you can continue this cycle for centuries. Having all this given to foreign companies with foreign employees and so on in exchange for some few corrupt dicks being bribed ultimately lowers your countries wealth. This simple argument should be able to resonate with most people strong enough, to implement a change of law by political referendum, or whatever tools you guys have to intervene into politics.

    @@dominikgadze4221 First of all, all of Europe is corrupt, just look at the Qatar and Eva Kaili corruption scandal. It's just that our DNA (not the biological kind, anti corruption department) in the last 10 years has been on a corruption hunt, headed by Codruta Kovesi, who is now the head of the European anti corruption department, she has been promoted by the EU. European countries like the mafia state of Italy is not less corrupt than Romania. In Italy it gets more dangerous to hunt for corruption, many journalists were killed by the Italian mafia. Romanians aren't stupid, we know that foreign countries, especially Austria do most of the illegal logging in my country and also play with the numbers. Because of climate change, now trees grow faster than the antiquated measuring techniques from 40 years ago say. Romania should use special scanners to number the trees, like they do in Western Europe and that is being talked here. Also, the Austrian private companies cut a lot of healthy more expensive trees and don't cut diseased trees that are almost worthless to show 'hey, we didn't cut those trees". Those Austrians are some cunning motherf**ers.

    @@kareenapandya1877 the logging never stopped. People in positions of power concerning these forests are politically appointed and work toghether with the loggers. For example some rangers will mark all the healthy trees on a patch as unhealthy, next day the company that won the contract for the sanitization of the forest (more than likely after a rigged auction) will cut down all the healthy trees and leave only the trees they were supposed to cut down. Happens everyday on most mountain ranges.

    Fellow Romanian. Salut, the main company doing this is schweighofer. This is at it's worse in the carpathians and bucovina. Investigation journalists even got deaththreats and guns pointed at them. All of this because of corruption. Sadly i don't see any way to stop this from a legal point of view, and also how to enforce this because police is way to corrupt and will defend the illegal logging because they get a cut of the profit.

    6:39 yes this is completely right. Edge trees will buttress into the wind and put down deeper roots up wind, they also tend to grow abit shorter to to both catch less win and also because they have reduced light competition. In selective thinning projects they try to avoid removing lines of trees where the wind can go as it will start to blow to trees down from the inside out.

    Gave you a like before even watching. As a romanian i can't thank you enough for your efforts. I still dream of the day when good people, aware people like you will have the power to actually address the real cause of deforestation of the romanian ancestral woods - the big Austrian companies that are strong enough to sway in their favor even the state government. Someday, maybe. Until then, whatever can be done is a godsend.

    I've heard similar theories about storm sensitivity after logging here in Sweden. Southern Sweden was hit by a huge storm about a decade ago and the damages was huge. The storm was called Gudrun if you want to look for it in the archives.

    Can you talk about thirsty cement and how if cities used this even if it was only parking lots would save millions to billions of tons of sand every year. Also thirsty cement can reduce flooding and increase groundwater levels. Oh ya reducing sand mining and use can save ecosystems helping save us.

    In Czech Republic, also a post-communism country, the clearcuts are still done, and not always with the excuse of the spruce bark beetle. Sometimes it's just the momentum of how things were done before. The forresters learn "how it should be done" by old high school teachers that never accepted the modern ecological concerns. And ordinary loggers often don't care a bit about the forest, they just want the work to be done. The momentum of stupidity and carelessness is a great force in the world, including the concerns for the nature.

    I've done tree seeding on clear cuts, it was on boggy but flat lands - that must be so tiring on a mountain side! I do wonder, wouldn't it be easier to bring bottles with holes in the cap full of seeds and shake the bottle every few meters to just spread seeds everywhere? must be hard to haul so many saplings up the slopes.
