Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood will announce urgent plans on Friday to tackle the overcrowding nightmare in England and Wales prisons.
Emergency measures might include letting some prisoners out earlier than planned. Mahmood will warn that the overcrowding, labeled "catastrophic" by the Ministry of Justice, demands "immediate action" to save the justice system from "total collapse."
Prime Minister Keir Starmer admits the problem is "worse than I thought" and is furious about dealing with this crisis so soon in his term.
At the NATO summit, Keir Starmer blasted the situation as "unforgivable" and blamed it on "gross irresponsibility" by the previous government.
