We've All Been Duped by LED LCD's Input Lag vs OLED for Gaming - Here's the Truth [PROMOTED]

Ғылым және технология

We explain why although the input lag of LED LCD TVs is similar to OLED's in [Game Mode], the actual latency when playing games is different due to the respective pixel response times of these two display technologies.
WARNING: This video contains flashing images, especially from 5:02 to 5:07, so please avoid watching if you're someone with photosensitive epilepsy. Viewing discretion is advised.
We used an oscilloscope + photodetector to measure the pixel response time, a slow-motion camera to demonstrate the real-world impact, as well as NVIDIA's LDAT (Latency Display Analysis Tool) device to measure the total end-to-end system latency.
The "Includes Paid Promotion" message in this video refers to the sponsorship by LG Display.

Do you think you will do a IMAX enhanced Disney+ review/comparison to the original versions? I really feel the new IMAX enhanced version are much better than the OG DoVi streaming versions. Some are claiming they’re literally the same. To me, they just look so much better. Like the resolution is actually better. Which even seems to make colors look better. At least Infinity War does, which is all I’ve had a chance to watch. The bigger size makes specular highlights look brighter too. Just due to the increased size. It’s just overall better!!! and I really hope this IMAX enhanced trend continues. It’s just makes the movies feel more cinematic at home. At least on my little 55” CX. Feels and looks much more like it did, when I saw it in theaters.

Havent LG OLED been made a lot slower in pixel response times these last 4 generations. Look at Rtings test on fx LG C7 55" and look at their waveform testpatterns. 2017 LG 55" C7 pixel response 80% = 0.1ms & 100% = 0.2ms. thats fast. and halleluja for PC or high framerate content but for general low framerate TV content, that is also to fast and can elevate panning stutter. and OLEDs now a days are more like 1100% to 1200% slower with 80% around 1.1ms and 100% around 2.4ms. Here is my 55" OLED under a macro kzread.info/dash/bejne/gqqK1Kubf7TIctI.html (notice how only 3 of the 4 WRGB subpixels can be lit at once, not sure if that has been changed on later WOLED panels

The natural progression has been CRT - Plasma - OLED. After CRT, Plasma carried the torch as an emissive display with a fast response time and fantastic black levels. OLED was handed the baton and is also an emissive display with fast response time and infinite black levels. I was exclusively a Plasma supporter and have been watching/supporting OLED since 2008 when Sony launched a 15 inch OLED tv that cost $2500. I’ve been an OLED owner since 2017 (a B7, now have 2 C9’s - it was a crazy deal I couldn't pass up) and couldn’t be happier. Manufacturers can rebrand all they want (LED, SUHD, QLED, etc) but they were always just an LCD. Nothing wrong with those tvs but if you're serious about gaming, movie watching and your budget allows, there is no substitute for OLED.

Interested to see input latency figures when BFI is enabled on both units, and how that compares to their standard modes. My understanding is that LG's BFI introduces a whole frame of input lag (presumably due to processing), and if that's the case I'd like LG to receive some very strong feedback about this processing delay for future televisions and monitors.

@Rev You cannot really make an accurate comparison, since CRTs did not have clear pixels, whereas OLEDs do. CRTs used a shadow mask to project pixels onto the screen, which made the pixels fuzzy-looking. CRT pixels were never crystal sharp, whereas OLED pixels are, as well as the pixels of any other display tech with a fixed pixel grid (LCD, MicroLED).

I’ve always attributed how jarring 30fps felt in games to me getting more and more used to 60fps games on consoles. However, I also felt like 30fps felt much worse since I got my first OLED TV and now I wonder whether the lower pixel response time of LCDs actually helped to „smooth“ out the 30fps picture since the transitions were still going on while they’re already completed almost instantaneously on an OLED? If so, that’s a very interesting insight I wasn’t aware of - thanks for educating us once again!

I know this is an old video, but I would like to say it's a shame it doesn't mention the feel of low framerate (30fps) games. There is much more noticeable judder (I hope that's the right word) than on LED LCD. The effect is shown in the Call of Duty clip, where the OLED picture looks jarring, but it doesn't make clear how it feels during actual gameplay. In fact, I didn't really find any info on this until after I noticed it myself on my new tv and specifically went looking for an answer. I'm playing Horizon Zero Dawn on PS5 at the moment, where performance mode at 60fps is a big graphical downgrade but resolution mode at 30fps feels very choppy. This is on my LG C1 but applicable to OLED as a technology and something that wasn't nearly as bothersome on my 10 year old Sony LED LCD. Thankfully it doesn't bother me in movies, though that might be due to Filmmaker mode. So yeah. OLED seems to be great for games at 60fps or higher, but bad for those running at 30fps. I wonder how Ratchet and Clank fares at 40fps.

If the LCD on the iPad is anything like on the new Macbook Pro which I suspect it is, Apple aren't using panels in the same league as gaming IPS LCDs when it comes to response times, with rise times 10 times as slow as a typical gaming IPS. It's really not a reasonable comparison if you're expecting the iPad to be representative of LCD tech. The response times are so slow that they're not actually capable of fully displaying their 120hz refresh rate. Mostly fine for content consumption that isn't gaming but it's not exactly showcasing the best of LCD

Yeah I noticed this also. The 120hz has the fluidity of 120hz but not the motion sharpness. There's a lot of ghosting on the display. A 120hz oled like on a S21 look significantly sharper in motion. Oled is just a better technology. LCD was never a great technology it's only now after decades of refinement that they're decent. They always had major draw backs, they only strength was efficiency and brightness and cost.

I would however like to point out that the difference in the end on 10ms that and OLED is faster in terms of total latency isn't what I expected. That's still fairly high, and it's 25% slower on an LCD but that's still only 10ms more.

10ms feels like a lot. I had a monitor for a while that had a 7ms response time, but every other feature on it was fantastic so I chose it anyway. Gaming on it gave me a headache after a few minutes, every single time. I've never bought a monitor with lower than a 4ms response time since, and it's changed the way I perceive a few milliseconds when it comes to features on my displays.

LCD has inversion artifact, the screen constantly flickers between different colors, you just dont see it because the brain filters it out, but it still causes eyestrain. Blasting several thousands nits in your face at night, while ruining image quality, is not what you want to get a good image. OLED beats LCD TVs with ease in tests and OLED is used for reference testing for this exact reason. Not a single LCD even comes close and even Samsung goes OLED now, because LCD can't compete, at all. OLED has better image quality by far, better pixel response and less smearing, way better than LCD on pretty much every aspect and it's way more healthy for your eyes too. LCD blasts your retina with blue light, this has been proven tons of times. Besides, my OLED can get plenty bright. 77 inch G1. Samsung has milked its customers for years at this point, selling expensive LCD trash. Lipstick on a pig, while talking OLED down because they could not produce it. Samsung praises OLED for mobile/tablet hahaha. This changes now, Samsung releases OLED for TOP-END LINE at CES 2022. LCD is finally only mid-end stuff even in Samsungs eyes. LCD in the future will only be entry to mid-end stuff. OLED and MLED (in 5-10 years) will have high-end locked down, you won't see a single LCD TV in the flagship segment.

That slow mo capture is a great demonstration of the OLED stutter effect as well. The LCD smearing the content often feels more natural to most people rather than the slide show like stutter. Definitely better at 120hz I'm sure. It'd be interesting to get some pro gamers to test them side by side. Honestly the smoother smearing might actually feel more natural and easier for aim based games than OLEDs instant frame by frame. It's like built in motion smoothing even if slightly slower. Our brains might predict the directions etc better. Would be a fascinating experiment. Also keep in mind that I believe on a VA panel coming out of black will be the slowest response time. This is why the most thorough gaming monitor reviews will measure the response time coming in and out of a variety of shades, where on VA black will always be the worst (a reason that IPS or TFT is the choice of pro gamers in some cases) but it's not the whole story.

Panasonic don’t make FALD sets anymore since the DX so your best bet is Sony or Samsung if you want to stick with LED LCD though Sony are more accurate out of the box but use minimal dimming zones though they still have a fantastic local dimming algorithm. I sometimes think about upgrading too but like you I’m not sold on OLED, I prefer the peak brightness my DX can produce especially in HDR and no worry of burn in. Possibly the X90j for 55” though it won’t have the colour accuracy or peak brightness of the DX if that’s what you’re looking for. Good luck!. 👍🏻

Peace of mind and not having to take so many precautions. I know the Qn85 will be abused and picture quality is pretty good. Input delay is also phenomenal and as a competitive gamer that’s all that matters. Today’s technology is so good that there really is no need to bash one over the other.
